Shaky Waves in La Costa

Thirty Speech & Debate students attended a five-day tournament in La Costa, California from
December 3 -7th.

It was pretty fun. We did pretty well. We learned a lot, 11th grader, Allie Ryerson said.

Joo-An Yoo & Austin Smith won first place in Public Forum. Kristyn Leonard won seventh
place in Dramatic Interpretation. Zil Joyce Dixon Romero won eighth place in Congress
debates. Alex Veyne and Sam Ross both broke to the semi-finals in Congress debates. Barry
Corcoran and Felicia Kalkman also broke in Public Forum. The school did not place.

I was proud of the whole Public Forum team because we did pretty well overall, 10th grader,
Nathan Hall said.

Debate students prepared for their events weeks in advance. They practiced debates and did
topic analysis. Speech students prepared for their events by practicing and rehearsing their
speeches. However, the desired results did not end up becoming the outcome.

Mr. Miles ended up being in the hospital for a few hours, and 10th grader, Brooks Anderson
admits, I was super nauseous on the bus ride there. I walk into the round, and Im super-straight
with the judge when he arrives. I say, If in mid-speech, I run out of the room because Im
throwing up, just be okay with it. I won that round.
