Abdassamad Clarke The worst delusion is to imagine that there has existed or

could exist an Islamic utopia. When you examine the history of the Muslims, you
realise that we are experts in dealing with human imperfection. We do not
discount people for even serious wrong action; that is the way of the khawarij
and is contrary to the agreed position of the people of the Sunna.
We do not even discount strong disbelievers for their disbelief or their political
stance or their being 'against Islam' or 'Islamophobes' because if we do that we
have left the customary practice of Muhammad, peace be upon him, who made
strong supplication for his strongest enemies beginning with 'Umar ibn alKhattab but not stopping with him. We could mention a long list of Companions
who were staunch enemies of Islam and of the Prophet, peace be upon him, but
who were nevertheless were won over. This is a Divine religion that overturns
hearts, not a political ideology.
Our worst afflictions are the self-righteousness of those who are sure of their own
'rightness'. We do not enter the Garden through 'rightness' but through the
mercy of the Divine Creator.
Our greatest danger is that we take our own political stances and prejudices as
the deen itself.
