started playing hockey at a very young


age and had always been a standout player
as a child with 1,000 goals scored by the
time he was 13

1978 Gretzky was signed to the


Edmonton Oilers which at that time was
apart of the World Hockey
Association(WHA)

The

WHA was shut down in 1979 and


Oilers, along with Gretzky, were merged
with the National Hockey
Association(NHL)

Career
He

played in the NHL for 20 seasons (1979-1999)


for four different teams

He

retired in 1999 after his season with the New


York Rangers

Achievements

Wayne Gretzky is known as the greatest hockey player ever

In his 20 seasons he scored 894 goals, and 1,963 assists and holds 60
NHL records

He won the Stanley Cup 4 times and the Hart Memorial Trophy 9
times

His number was retired after his last game

retirement, in 2005, Wayne Gretzky was


hired as the head coach of the Phoenix Coyotes

He

coached for five unsuccessful seasons and


stepped down from head coach
