Grade 8 Geography- Chapter 7 Independent Study UnitChallenges to Improving Quality of Life

As part of this section you are going to be completing several different activities on your own.
You will learn everything from what you are willing to put into these 2 chapters. If you simply skim
through the work and barely try, your mark will reflect this. You will be most successful if you follow
the time lines given and ask lots and lots of well thought out questions that I can hopefully answer. You
are in charge of your learning.
Day 1
1) Look at the picture on pg 196/197- without reading the caption on pg 196 explain just from a pure
eyes only view what some of the difficulties residents of this community may have in terms of quality
of life.
2) Read pg 199 and create your own point form note based on the 3 types of develop (ing/ed) countries.
Copy and think about Figure 7.2 on pg 199 as well.
3) Read Pg's 202-203 You do not need to make a large note but writing down a few specific points
would be a good idea.
4)Go to the following website:

5)Read all of the information this webpage. Copy out the Age Structure Diagram. Also watch the
youtube video that is in the middle of the page. (it would be a good idea to write down a few points
from the video)
Day 2
1)Read pg 204- this is a general interest page and simply needs to be read- the information on this page
is useful and could easily used to help answer a large question or essay question later on a unit test or
for Day 2 # 3.
2) Read Pg 205- copy out the bolded words with definitions. Answer questions 2 and 3 on pg 205
(they are to be handed in at the end)
3) Answer / Research Question 3 on page 223- Do not go crazy and write a huge report- 1 page is
plenty.
Day 3
1) Read pages 206- 207. Define Crown Land and the percentages owned provincially and federally.
2) Read Pg's 208/ 209 and fill out the T-Chart: Foreign Ownership
Day 4)
1)Read Pages 212-219
2)Define all highlighted words
3)Complete the Worksheet How do Governments Affect Quality of Life
4) Answer the following question. How does the Canadian, Provincial and Windsor governments affect
your life? This might take some research (this is a big hint). Your explanation should show both sides
of the argument- the good and the bad. Your answer should be detailed and well explained. Providing
proof for your ideas is a great idea (hint- who controls the water? The police? Etc...)
Day 5)
Catch up and make sure everything is ready to be handed in
