Vision of Learners

Every child is unique and enters the classroom with varying

strengths and weaknesses. Genetics and environment both play a role
in establishing their cognitive development. Teachers have a
responsibility to evaluate and understand each of their students. A
multi-sensory approach to learning is necessary to help students gain
skills using their preferred mode of learning. However, its important
for students to be exposed to various types of learning to help them
accommodate and grow. When teaching young children, a focus on
social interactions and play is essential. They are building their base of
knowledge through interactions and experiences. They must hear
frequent appropriate language, have opportunities for movement and
play with peers. Its at this age that their basic needs must be met by
their primary caregivers. Teaching the parent is more important than
teaching the child at this age. When a connection can be made with
the student or parent, it automatically allows for more learning to
occur.
The role of a leader in facilitation of learning occurs in many
ways. Maintaining a positive culture and a visually appealing school is
the first step. Its necessary to create an environment that both
teachers and students want to be in everyday. Providing relevant
professional development that respects teachers talents, abilities and
time promotes learning. Distributing leadership throughout the

building through school committees, professional development and

other opportunities allows for more ownership. Providing support and
encouragement for outside of the box thinking encourages new ideas
and change. Building in times for collaboration to share ideas and
learning ensures that teachers feel supported. Finally, celebrating
learning and achievements for both students and teachers helps push
all forward toward the vision and goals.
