Concepts of Print Lesson Plan
Background:
This lesson plan is designed for a child in preschool or in kindergarten who does not read yet.
This lesson plan is adapted from Education.com Concepts About Print website ( Bishop, Yopp,
Yopp, and Pearson 2014).
Student will get a personal idea of how a book works by making one from a favorite book. I
choose Chicka Chicka Boom Boom (Martin, Jr. and Archambault, 1989)
Steps taken:
Choose a book (Chicka Chicka Boom Boom)
Read the book together, to get the child excited about it.
Get 4 pieces of paper and fold them in half.
Staple them together on the folded side.
Have the child help to create the book with letters and pictures.
Make sure to give the author credit.
Explanation:
This exercise will help with reading by hands on learning about how a book works. The child
will help to draw some of the pictures form the book in the order that they appear. In this
particular book, the child will get a good idea of how to draw the alphabet by watching it being
drawn (and helping to draw it).
This lesson plan will help children who do not have a lot of exposure to books to understand how
they work. Hopefully it will show children that books can be exciting! Having a book of their
very own that they were able to help to work on can be very special.
