Business in Sports
There are many professional or college teams worldwide as well as leagues. Its not also
just about playing in the field and trying to kick the ball to the net and score; its about having
more background knowledge to what happens behinds the scenes before a match or a more
detailed look at what happens during the week for preparations before a match. Sports Managers,
also referred to as general managers, handle business for sports teams and athletes in a variety of
sports at a college or professional level. ("What's the Job) A Sports Manager handles business
such as trade deals, handling media relations, scouting players/staff, and organizing
promotional events for club teams and athletes in sports at a college or professional level.
Trading deals are a tremendous issue but why sports managers are used for. Trade deals
are notifications about buying, selling, or loaning players. Those managers that are in that choice
of field look at the trading deals that are going on at the moment and tend to meet up and make
decisions to what player they would want to buy. Usually these decisions often take hours to
choose from because they want to make the right decision when looking at those deals. Sports
managers make decisions or have to make professional decisions in doing what's best for the
team not just for them, only when needed, too. Also, they have to communicate with sports
managers to know how much is in the team's budget to know how much money they need to
spend on the players. These decisions that they have to make has to be on their own time, which
is more stressful because they have to set up meetings to meet with the staff like other sports
managers or meet up with coaches from other clubs they are willing to scout for. Another reason
why its more stressful is because they have to be responsible to know when, where, and how to
scout each player that they have on their watch list. They get the information from each player

that they have by the meetings they set up and also have to be careful to know which will be the
better choice.
Networking is not just about facebook, twitter, emails, and phone calls, it means that
when someone is having a conversation, the person's face has to be known, and also by bumping
into someone the person may not know and greeting them. (Nolan). Sport Managers are
responsible for moderating communications between the organization and media outlets such as
newspapers, press conferences, and television stations. They are responsible for informing the
media when something new happens within the organization and they also communicate with
journalists when a negative event happens. ("What's the Job) As sports managers, they have to
know how to communicate off or on camera. On a daily basis, people who are in Sports
Management, have to learn how to use communication skills. They use these skills to know how
to communicate with businesses. The higher the agency that a sports manager is working for, the
more that person needs know more about using their communication skills. When a sports
manager is needed, they are called and have to travel for these press conferences or events that
are important.
There are many fields a sports manager can choose under. One of those related fields is
scouting players and staff members. Scouting players and staff members requires an enormous
amount of work hours and busy schedules. For that, on their own time, they tend to get
information about the players from any sports academy that they are assigned to. They schedule
or organize their meetings on their own time also. Agencies will pay more attention to the staff
they have by knowing what's the better choice. Usually the first thing sports managers do is set
up a meeting with the club teams coach depending on who they will be scouting for. Second they
gather information about when and where is the good time for the scout to begin. Third, the

scouts meet up with the club and begin to scout each player during their training sessions. During
these training sessions, scouts evaluate the players skills at a professional. (What coaches) They
look at each characteristic of the sport that is required. Finally, they gather information about
each player they scouted in the club and set up the last meeting to make their decision about
buying which player for the team. (What college scouts) In that video, it talked about what scouts
do and what they look for specifically in a player. This includes particular characteristics
including skill and personality.
As a sports manager, traveling will be the main priority in this career path. (Kramer)
Sport managers work from an office, to traveling to away games that can be across the seas
depending on what opponent the team is facing. Sport managers will travel to promotional events
that they have to attend to because they are the ones that organized it. They do not spend as much
time in their home because theyre usually busy all the time organizing events. For the team/club
theyre working under, if their season is going bad, they tend to talk. During the sports season,
sport managers will work long hours including nights and weekends. They put in additional
hours per week, but depends on how busy the week will be or not. Rather on a particular work
schedule or not, during the off season sport managers have no time to waste because they need to
be responsible for current negotiations that are going on or to get ready for preparations before
the season starts. Sport Managers do not have an organized schedule in their hands.
Sports Management has many choices in this career path. Many of them are related to
each other and have some of the same working conditions but have different working overviews.
This is the type of career option for those who do not become a professional coach or soccer
player. They have passion and love the sport that relate to working in the career path of it. The
role of the Sports Manager in sports is that they handle business for club teams and athletes in

sports at a college or professional level such as trade deals, draft players/staff and organize
promotional events.
