As early as 30,000 B.C., humans have been etching and painting on public surfaces. Prehistoric cave paintings, and pictographs commonly feature animals, humans, symbols, and daily life. Most academics agree that they were created either to enhance spiritual rituals or to show daily life. Because these carvings and paintings were most likely permitted by other members of the society, some argue that this form of prehistoric art cannot be called graffiti. Since there has been writing, humans have created graffiti. Graffiti has been found on the walls of Pompeii, in the catacombs of Rome, on the bases of Greek vases etc. Historic traveler graffiti can be found scribbled or etched onto the surfaces of famous heritage sites across the globe. During the early 1800s, travelers, archaeologists, missionaries, and scholars etched their names onto temple walls across Egypt and Sudan. Perhaps the most ubiquitous graffiti of the 20" century was the ‘Kilroy Was Here!” graffiti. The phrase and image of ‘Kilroy’ were created by U.S. servicemen during the Second World War. During the war, ‘Kilroy Was Here!’ graffiti began to appear at home and wherever the American military traveled abroad. The phrase and cartoon soon became 2 symbol of America’s presence throughout the world. ‘Kilroy Was Here!’ can be found ‘on the Statue of Liberty, atop Mount Everest, on huts in Polynesia, and even on the surface ‘of the moon. People first recognized graffiti as art during the 1970s and 80s when graffiti artists ‘Began coloring the NYC subway trains. The movement has been traced to a young kid ‘om Washington Heights who would write his alias TAKT 183 on subway trains, stations, posts and buildings as he made his way across the city as a foot messenger. The New “York Times published an article about the mysterious TAKI 183 tag, making him the first graffiti writer to be recognized outside the subculture. cae 8 probanyelvvizsga nyelybol|=B2 _ ale | Once writers discovered that they could ‘hit’ as many trains as possible at the train yards overnight, with little fear of being caught, the emphasis shifted from quantity to quality. Writers also began to add design elements to their names, including arrows, stars, clouds, and crowns. More elaborate ‘pieces’, often covering entire train cars, got the at- tention of the art world. The NYC Metro Transit Authorities (MTA) launched a campaign to rid the subway system of graffiti (‘No graffiti will run’) in the late 1980s. Though this act in many ways ended the NYC subway art era, the idea of creating graffiti art had already expanded out- side the NY area. In many ways, graffiti art has become a global phenomenon, Contemporary graffiti art- ists’ works can be often found in multiple cities around the world. The World Wide Web and temporary exhibitions have enabled writers to show their work and to view others” work across international lines. Today, graffiti has expanded to include other forms of public art, including stencil graffiti, stickers, and sometimes public sculptures and mosaics. Many people label the conglomeration of these forms, street art, or post-graffiti. http://www.ucl.ac.uk/museumstudies/websites06/ancelet/thehistoryofgraffiti.htm . Although primarily a bird of New Zealand =aative forests, kiwis also live in scrub and native grasslands. Because the kiwi is a semi socturnal, secretive bird, few New Zealanders have seen their national bird in the wild. A flightless bird about the size of a domestic fowl, the kiwi has coarse, bristly, hair-like ‘fathers. Females are larger than males. Kiwis grow lw about the size of a chicken and weigh between three and nine pounds. ey have no tail and tiny two-inch wings which for all practical purposes, are useless. pite its awkward appearance, a kiwi can actually outrun a human and they have ble them to kick and slash an enemy. Using its excellent sense of smell and flexible bill, the kiwi feeds on worms, insects ad grubs, supplemented by leaves, berries and seeds. main breeding period is from late winter to summer. Nests may be in hollow logs, der tree roots, in natural holes or in burrows excavated mainly by the male, Most nests contain one or two eggs. Eggs are smooth, and coloured ivory or greenish-white. Kiwi s2gs are proportionately larger compared to the size of the adult female than the eggs of 8 probanyelvvizsga shy | = 3 any other bird. An egg may reach one-quarter of its mother’s weight. After the first egg is laid, the male takes over incubation and nest maintenance. Incubation takes about eleven weeks but if the female returns to lay another egg, the male has to sit on the clutch for a much longer time. Leaving the nest only occasionally, the male’s weight can decrease by up to one third. The young chick is not fed by the adult, but survives on a large reserve of yolk in its belly. Gaining strength, the chick remains in the nest for six to ten days. The young kiwi then leaves the burrow, and, accompanied by the male, begins to search for food. Kiwis have been known to live up to twenty years. Before the coming of the Maori, the kiwi had no predators. Although the Maori valued kiwi feathers for making cloaks, the number of birds killed by Maoris was prob- ably insignificant. During the latter part of the last century, many thousands of kiwis were captured by Europeans for zoos, museums and private collections. Bush clearing, intro- duced predators, opossum traps and motor vehicles have all contributed to the reduction in the kiwi population. As long as suitable habitat is set aside, and the remaining kiwis are left undisturbed, the survival of this unique bird should be assured. The Kiwi as an emblem first appeared in the late 19” century on New Zealand military badges symbolising the confinement of the kiwi to the islands of New Zealand. In 1905 students of Auckland University College began publishing a magazine called “The Kiwi which survived until the mid 1960s. http:/www.chemistry.co.nz/kiwibird.htm 56. The holidays draw out the best in most of us each year. They also bring what seems like an environmentalist’ worst nightmare: tons of extra garbage, millions of chopped-down trees, and megawatts of flashing lights. Between Thanksgiving and New Year’s day, Americans throw away a million extra tons (900,000 metric tons) of garbage each week, including holiday wrapping and packaging. So why not recycle holiday gift wrap? If every family reused just 2 feet (0.6 meter) of holiday ribbon, the 38,000 miles (61,000 kilometers) of ribbon saved could tie a bow around the entire planet. And not all gifts need wrapping. Think back to your three favorite holiday memories. Probably they all involve time you spent with your family and friends. By giving gifts that can be experienced, like tickets to a haseball game or a homemade dinner, you can minimize wrapping and still win points with the receiver. ee ee Ne deo seu ysluyrase Yah So) = — For many, Christmas wouldn’t be the same without a live, fragrant Christmas tree in their home. Today nearly all of the trees sold at seasonal Christmas-tree lots are grown on tree farms. So forests aren’t hurt by choosing a cut tree. Artificial trees are not a good solution because they consume significant energy and petroleum-based materials during their manufacture. But a one-time purchase of an artifi- cial tree can save petrol otherwise used for annual trips to the local tree farm. Recycling fresh trees after Christmas can make a huge difference in reducing holiday waste. Instead of taking up space in the landfill, trees can be ground into wood chips, which can be used to mulch gardens or parks and to prevent erosion at a local watershed. The newest energy-saving stars on the holiday scene are Christmas lights made with light-emitting diodes, or LEDs. First introduced in 2001, LEDs incorporate the same computer-chip technology used to light calculators and watches. The lights, which use semiconducting material rather than incandescent filaments, are 90 percent more effi- cient than traditional Christmas lights. According to one U.S. Department of Energy study, if everyone replaced their con- ventional holiday light strings with LEDs, at least two billion kilowatt-hours of electric- ity could be saved in a month. The savings would be enough to power 200,000 homes for a year, according to Lit- tleton, Colorado-based Holiday Creations, which makes and distributes a popular line of LED light strings. The LEDs release little heat, and they last about 200,000 hours. In the unlikely event that one does burn out, the rest of the lights keep on glowing. hutp://news.nationalgeographic.com/news/ 2004/12/1220_041220_green_christmas.himl arcs shirtless | 156) You hear the following advertisement in a shopping centre ‘Are you ready for this? Police told the Associated Press that although Williams is being questioned in the investigation, he is not considered a suspect, but the investigation is looking into whether or not the two incidents are related. “We don’t think he was the one who actually committed the robbery, but it may have been a spinoff or may have been triggered by what reportedly happened with his party on the beach,” the police spokesman said. Attp://www.shortnews.com/start.cfm? id= 79383 Over the past few months, Radio6 has interviewed a number of different people from all over the television industry. Today Cari Goldsmith, the winner of this season’s Britain’s Next Top Model, took time out of her now hectic schedule to sit down with us here at Radio6 and discuss her experience on the TV show. We discussed what happened behind the scenes, how she dealt with the pressure, and her plans for the future. oro ysi auras) Valu se) = yd — Interviewer: What were you doing before Top Model? Cari: 1 was working as a photographer in Hastings! Interviewer: Have you always aspired to be a model? Cari: Oh, absolutely! I’ve always loved the camera, always looked to perform and everything. Interviewer: How confident were you going into the show? A lot of people got a sense that you’d be the winner, or at least one of the top few, early on. At what point did you start thinking to yourself, I really have a chance to win this thing? . Cari: Not until I was in the top 2, actually, because my whole thing was just to make it to the next cut, make it to the next cut. I never thought about the overall prize. So I wouldn’t just focus on that only, I just focused on getting to the next step, one step at a time. Interviewer: What was the final runway show like? Was there an audience? How many people turned out? It was a little hard to tell on TV. Cari: Yeah it was hard for us too because it was so dark. You know, like, the audience was dark. And it was actually a lot longer than what they showed; we ran each dress like twice. Interviewer: How nervous were you? Cari: Oh, it was absolutely nerve-racking. Everything was riding on it. I felt like every- thing before didn’t really matter, besides that one. Interviewer: On the show, they portrayed a lot of tension between you and Melrose. Was that exaggerated by the producers at all or did you girls really just not get along? Cari: Well, it’s not like we didn’t get along. There was just tension because we were both really good competitors. Interviewer: Can you tell us what really happened with the dress-ripping incident? Cari: Oh, it was totally an accident. If you re-watch it, you can tell that we were turning to each other, and then we suddenly turned away really fast to continue on our opposite ways, and my heel just got caught on her train. It was a wedding gown that had a four foot train, so total accident. Interviewer: Do you think the show portrayed you as the real you? Do you think your true personality came through? Cari: Oh, definitely. I’m funny and I’m goofy. I mean, the one thing they did, is they showed the extreme highs and the extreme lows to make me look a little manic. There was a lot of times when I was really chill, but that’s not really fun to watch I guess. No, | am outgoing and silly and I really don’t care what people think of me. Interviewer: You’ve become a role model and an inspiration for a lot of young girls. How does that make you feel and was that something you were conscious of during the show, and do you have anything you’d like to say to them? Pwangenyaoeeovegsnrata= Cari: Oh, I think that’s so hard for young girls to look at someone and realize that they’re not just a winner because they’re beautiful, but that they’re a winner because they showed who you are, and that’s a lot of things that people don’t understand. They think that image is everything, especially young girls. Image isn’t everything. What sets you apart and what makes you memorable is how you act — that’s the most important thing. Don’t be someone else that you're not and don’t try to be, because it’s just not worth it. You’ve got to stay true to yourself because if you’re not true to yourself, then you’re lying to yourself and it’s no fun to lie to yourself. Interviewer: Is there anything that you'd like your fans or viewers to know that maybe they couldn’t have guessed watching the show? Cari: That’s a good question. I mean, during especially the last episode, they said a lot of negative things about me, but that’s just the part they showed to trick the viewers. A lot of editing is to trick the viewers not to let them guess who’s going to win. Interviewer: Now you're going to Sydney, Australia. What are you going to be doing there? Cari: ’'m doing my first CoverGirl shoot! I can’t wait! Interviewer: What are your plans for the future and what do you have on tap for the next few months? Cari: Keep modeling and getting my book filled and just stepping out of the reality world. I want to make it to the top more, and more and more. I just want to keep on working! Interviewer: Thank you for your answers, it was nice listening to you. hitp:/www. buddytv.com/articles/americas-next-top-model/more/ exclusive-interview-caridee-en-2657.aspx '56. They floor the gas and experiment with drugs and play with guns; according to Center for Disease Control and Prevention fig- ures, more than 16,000 young people die each year from unintentional injuries. The most common-sense explanation for teens’ carelessness is that their brains just aren’t developed enough to know better. But new research suggests that in the case of some teens, the cause is just the opposite: the brain matures not too slowly but, perhaps, too quickly. Ina paper just published in PLoS ONE, a team led by psychiatrist Gregory Berns of Emory University in Atlanta shows that adolescents who engage in more dangerous activities have white-matter pathways that appear more mature than those of risk- avoiding youths. Berns and his colleagues gathered 91 kids aged 12 to 18 and asked them to fill ina questionnaire about their tendencies to engage in behaviours such as driving without a licence, having unprotected sex and using drugs. Then they had the kids undergo a relatively new kind of brain scan. After analyzing the scans, the authors found a strong link between how risky the students described their behaviour and how sophisticated their white matter was. The more mature the look of the brain is, the more risk-taking the teenager tended to report. The results challenge the accepted notion that teens make silly decisions because their brains are immature. Although previous research has shown that most teens’ gray matter structures are less advanced than those of adults, as you would expect, until now noone has studied teens’ white matter, which works along with gray matter to produce decisions. Why would kids who take more risks turn out to have more adult-like white matter than other kids? The authors suggest that some risk-taking among adolescents is evidence that they are trying out more adult-like roles. Having unsafe sex and driving too fast may be mistakes, but kids often have to experiment with limits in order to learn how to live within them. This is a sign of maturity. “Adolescents who engage in risky behaviours obtain more experience in a variety of fields,” the authors write. “Their more conservative peers, in contrast, do not have as much ‘life experience’ and therefore might be expected to have more immature brains.” Another possible explanation is that some teenagers whose brains develop more quickly than others become uncomfortable with the gap between their biological capabilities and the social rules they must follow as kids. For now, these theories are just speculation, and the researchers concede that the interaction of white and gray matter is so complex that hard conclusions remain elusive. A Guan) SOs dee) — eel. | “We have a new piece to the puzzle here,” says Emory’s Monica Capra, one of the study’s authors. “But we don’t have it all together.” QOrianka Kilcher has never pumped a gallon of gasoline into her car. Never. Then again, she’s never owned a car that needed gasoline. You could say she is at ground zero of the ZE, or zero-emission, vehicle future. A 19-year-old actress living in Santa Monica, California (she played Pocahontas in the 2005 movie The New World), Q’Orianka is on her second hydrogen-fuel-cell car, a Honda FCX Clarity, a four-door with a 200-mile range. “I don’t think I will ever buy a gas car,” she says. “I can go everywhere I want to go with this. Plus, it’s a guy magnet.” Auto-marketing gurus take note: the brave new world of ZE cars is here, ready or not, and please make them sexy. There are three types of zero, or near zero, emission cars: electric plug-ins, hybrid plug-ins and hydrogen fuel cells (which create power by having oxygen and hydrogen pass over electricity-generating electrodes). But each major automaker has its own take on which advanced technology will win 10 years down the road. The automaker's first electric, the Nissan Leaf, was launched last month and is re- ferred to as the world’s first affordable ZE. No price has been announced (the Leaf is still 14 months away from being available), but it’s estimated to come in under $30,000. It seats five adults, goes 100 miles on a charge with V6 performance, offers advanced electronics and will reach 90 m.p.h. Nissan says it will produce 50,000 electric cars globally by 2010, and it’s scaling up plants. “You'd never think of training consumers on how to fill up a gasoline-powered car,” says Honda’s Ellis. “But it’s the very first thing we show them.” Dealers will ask prospective buyers some strange questions too, such as “Do you own a garage, for in-home refuelling?” If the answer is no, an old-school, fuel-efficient Civic might be a better choice. And if your commute is more than 40 miles, well, you might want to kick the tires on a nifty hybrid. If, like Q’Orianka, you want a fuel-cell car, but you're not living in the Southern Californian hydrogen-fuelling cluster, sorry. Only a dozen hydrogen-fuelling stations exist, all in a 60-mile stretch between Newport Beach and Santa Monica. But this same internal research shows some big inconveniences too. Some 21% of consumers will not consider a pure electric car because of the need to plug-in at home, according to Nickerson. “We believe that 10 years on, the winners will be all new technologies, but hybrids will be the largest winner of them all.” Then again, as Honda’s Ellis says, “It all depends on the price of gas.” Ey eo eu yaiaurassse) Yah y |= 33 ECL Test 2 For the ailing music industry, Norah Jones is a sure thing. Every one of her first three records has gone to No. 1 both inside and outside the US — she’s sold more than 36 mil- lion albums around the world, and she’s not even 30. “My first album was made by just throwing stuff to the wall to see if it stuck,” she has said about Come Away With Me, which won eight Grammy Awards. The songs on that album were wildly successful, they were the beginning of an evolution: as she has said, “I hadn’t even figured out what kind of music I wanted to do yet.” As NEWSWEEK was allowed an exclusive first listen to some of The Fall — her fourth album, due out in November — it’s clear she’s still figuring it out, and that’s a good thing. The simplest conclusion after four tracks is that Jones is sounding much more like the downtown New York where she lives now than the Texas where she grew up. That’s for good reason: Jones did most of the songwriting on the guitar, something new for her. If listening to her old albums was like sipping light beer, The Fall is like swallowing whisky straight up. The change amplifies what Jones is making into a trend. Her second album, Feels Like Home, sounded more assertive, but fell very much in line with her first. With guests including Dolly Parton, many of the songs drew the country roots out of Jones’s Texas upbringing. Soft-sounding pianos and rolling beats made for easy listening. It was on her third record, Not Too Late, released in 2007, that she refined her sound. The songs were more produced and featured a more mature voice willing to take risks. On The Fall, it’s not just the instruments that have changed. The album was produced by Jacquire King, a new addition whose rock credits include Kings of Leon and Modest Mouse. Several co-writers made the album, too, including the prolific rock wunderkind Ryan Adams. But the new approach also poses the biggest risk to her longtime fans: with the louder hand, her voice, rather than a shining jewel, may be lost amid the ruckus. But it shouldn’t. Any ruckus on The Fall is still tame by most standards. The likely first single, “Chasing Pirates,” is a compact little song that could put Jones on radio stations this year that may have played her songs only rarely before. Somewhere in Iowa, a pig is being raised in a pen, packed in so tightly with other pigs that their tails have been chopped off so they won’t bite one another. To prevent him from getting sick in such close quarters, he is given antibiotics. The waste produced ‘i 5 - EMI) S40 Vesicles Cl | Re by the pig and his thousands of mates on the factory farm where they live goes into manure lagoons that blanket neighbouring communities with air pollution and a bad smell. He’s fed on American corn that was grown with the help of government subsidies and millions of tons of chemical fertilizer. When the pig is killed, at about 5 months of age, he'll become sausage or bacon that will sell cheap, feeding an American addiction to meat that has contributed to an obesity epidemic currently affecting more than two- thirds of the population. And when the rains come, the excess fertilizer will be washed into the Mississippi River and down into the Gulf of Mexico, where it will help kill fish for miles and miles around. That’s the state of your bacon — circa 2009. Horror stories about the food industry have long been with us ~ ever since 1906, when Upton Sinclair’s landmark novel The Jungle told some ugly truths about how America produces its meat. In the century that followed, things got much better, and in some ways much worse. The U.S. agricultural industry can now produce unlimited quantities of meat and grain at remarkably cheap prices. But it does so at a high cost to the environment, animals and humans. Those hidden prices are the erosion of our fertile farmland, cages for egg-laying chickens so packed that the birds can’t even raise their wings and the scary rise of antibiotic-resistant bacteria among farm animals. You can also add to the price tag the acceleration of global warming — our energy-intensive food system uses 19% of U.S. fossil fuels, more than any other sector of the economy. And perhaps worst of all, our food is increasingly bad for us, even dangerous. There have been several cases involving contaminated foods this year, including an outbreak of salmonella from tainted peanuts that killed at least eight people and sickened 600, which has made consumers worried about the safety of their meals. A food system that generates cheap, filling food at the expense of healthier produce is also a principal cause of America’s obesity epidemic. At a time when the nation is close to a civil war over health-care reform, obesity adds $147 billion a year to our doctors’ bills. “The way we farm now is destroying the soil, the environment and us,” says Doug Gurian-Sherman, a leading scientist of the US Food and Environment Program. Some Americans are listening to such warnings and are working to transform the way the country eats — ranchers and farmers who are raising sustainable food. Documentaries like the Food Inc. and the work of investigative journalists like Fric Schlosser and Michael Pollan are reprising Sinclair’s work, awakening a sleeping public to the uncomfortable realities of how we eat. Change is also coming from the very top. First Lady Michelle Obama’s White House garden has so far yielded more than 225 Ib. of organic produce — and tons of power- ful symbolism. But hers is still a losing battle. Despite increasing public awareness, sustainable agriculture, while the fastest-growing sector of the food industry, remains a tiny enterprise: according to the most recent data from the U.S. Department of Agri- culture, less than 1% of American cropland is farmed organically. Sustainable food is also pricier than conventional food and harder to find. And while large companies like General Mills have opened organic divisions, purists worry that the very definition of sustainability will be co-opted as a result. 8 probanyelywizsga nyelvybol = Bz Be wit ECL Test 3 4 Jay Leno drove to work today in an 80-year-old car. It sits in his parking space in the NBC lot, on this sweltering summer morning in Burbank, a 1925 Model T Roadster. “That’s part of my social experiment, being green,” he tells me. “It’s my theory that if you drive the same car for 80 years, you’re more environmentally friendly than buying a new car every five or six years, even if it’s a hybrid. I mean, that is the original green car, It has nothing on it. There’s no water pump, no oil pump. There’s none — it just has what you need to get from point A to point B.” Leno has newer, fancier cars and motorcycles, more than 100 of them; he drives a different one nearly every day to his job, which presently involves figuring out how to make sleepy people laugh and keep a legendary TV network from imploding. But his eco-Tin Lizzie is a particularly good metaphor for Leno’s new show. It’s a simple antique being repurposed to solve a 21“ century problem of limited resources. No offense to the former Tonight Show host — who at 59 is a quarter-century younger than his wheels — but NBC’s The Jay Leno Show, which is on air on September 14 at 10 p.m., is the oldest thing on TV: a comedy-variety show, with a funnyman, a stage, guests and in-show ads. And yet it is also a radical experiment: a single show airing every week- night during prime time on a major broadcast network, cheaper to produce for an entire week than a single hour of the pricey scripted dramas that usually hold such a time slot. If The Jay Leno Show succeeds — where succeeding means not getting more viewers than the competition but simply increasing NBC’s profit margin — it suggests a TV future in which ambitious dramas become the stuff of boutique cable, while the broadcasters become a megaphone for live events and cheap non-fiction. “If the Leno Show works,” says former NBC president Fred Silverman, “it will be the most significant thing to happen in broadcast television in the last decade.” Por 2 ani SSI Coss elon As the only male in a household of four females, Matt Damon’s life is filled with love and fairy princesses. “J call it the ‘testosterone deficit.’ But I'm happy with that,” Damon told PEOPLE at Friday’s premiere of The Informant! at the Toronto International Film Festival of his home life. “I love my girls and it’s a lot of pink, a lot of princesses and a lot of fun.” With his bachelor days behind him, Damon, 38, and his wife, Luciana, are in domestic bliss, celebrating special milestones in the lives of their daughters: Gia, 13 months, Isa- bella, 3, and Alexia, 11. “Gia is just ready to start talking and making sounds,” said the proud papa. “It’s been really exciting and we are anxious to hear what she says.” The budding linguist, however, already isa skilled walker. “She’s been walking since 9 months, which is pretty incredible,” he said, Gia’s big sister Isabella is getting ready to altend pre-school — possibly leaving the star in tears. “I think I will get emotional when we take her. In fact, some believed Damon’s pudgy physique was an upgrade over his normal weight. “Every day people would come down to watch us shoot and invariably someone would say, ‘Wow you are so much better looking in person,’” the star told PEOPLE at the film’s press conference Friday aftemoon. “And I said, ‘thank you.’ But I really did wonder, was it the wig, the moustache, the 30 Ibs. and the fake nose, or maybe the wardrobe that helped?” And what did Luciana think of her husband’s extreme transformation? “She was a good sport about it, There was just more of me to love. I loved parading around with my belly.” ECL Test 4 Por Simi anaR Coee Noise pollution or environmental noise is displeasing human-, animal- or machine-created sound that disrupts the balance of human or animal life. The source of most outdoor noise worldwide is transportation systems, including motor vehicle noise, aircraft noise and rail noise. Poor urban planning may give rise to noise pollution, since side-by-side industrial and residential buildings can result in noise pollution in the residential area. Other sources of indoor and outdoor noise pollution are car alarms, emergency service sirens, office equipment, factory machinery, construction work, barking dogs, appliances, power tools, lighting hum, audio entertainment systems, loudspeakers, and noisy people. Noise health effects are both health and behavioural in nature. Unwanted sound can damage physiological and psychological health. Noise pollution can cause annoyance and aggression, hypertension, high stress levels, hearing loss, sleep disturbances, and other harmful effects. It can even lead to severe depression and at times panic attacks. Chronic exposure to noise may cause hearing loss. Older males exposed to significant noise at work show significantly reduced hearing sensitivity than those not exposed to it, though differences in hearing sensitivity decrease with time. A comparison of Maaban 8 probanyelvvizsga Yeh) | tribesmen, who were hardly ever exposed to transportation or industrial noise, to a typical U.S. population showed that chronic exposure to moderately high levels of environmental noise contributes to hearing loss. Noise pollution is also a cause of annoyance. A 2005 study by Spanish researchers found that in urban areas households are willing to pay approximately four Euros per decibel per year for noise reduction. Noise can have a detrimental effect on animals, as well, by causing stress, increasing risk of death by changing the delicate balance in predator/prey detection and avoidance, and by interfering with their use of sounds in communication especially in relation to re- production and in navigation. Noise can lead to temporary or permanent loss of hearing. An impact of noise on animal life is the reduction of usable habitat that noisy areas may cause, which in the case of endangered species may lead to extinction. One of the best-known cases of damage caused by noise pollution is the death of certain species of beached whales, brought on by the loud sound of military sonar. As can be seen, noise pollution affects all walks of life. Steps should be taken immediately to minimise the harmful effects. One step can be noise mapping, which is a well-established practice in many European countries. It is an integral part of the proc- ess of developing a noise strategy, in order to ensure that current and future noise levels are in compliance with existing EU legislative standards. When not making blockbusters, Johnny Depp likes to relax far from Hollywood — around his 45-acre private Bahamian island, Little Hall’s Pond Cay, to be exact. As experienced from aboard his 156-ft. yacht, the Vajoliroja, an amalgam of the names of his children, himself, and partner Vanessa Paradis, “I don’t think I’d ever seen any place so pure and beautiful,” the Public Enemies star, 45, tells Vanity Fair for its July issue, on sale nationally June 9. The Pond Cay life, he says, “is my decompression. It’s my way of trying to return to normalcy,” he says. “Escapism is survival to me.” On the island itself, one can snorkel among barracudas and neon-coloured fish, and nurse sharks in what Depp has named Heath’s Place, after Heath Ledger. “You can feel your pulse rate drop about 20 beats. It’s instant freedom. And that rare beast — simplicity — can be achieved. And a little morsel of anonymity,” he says. “Whenever I was getting frustrated about being ‘novelty boy’ and making movies, I told myself, ‘Calm down’. I can come down here and disappear. I spent the Christmas season here with Vanessa and the kids. You can feed hot dogs to the nurse sharks in the Exumas [the out islands of the Bahamas] — but it’s best not to swim when doing it.” Owning one’s own island also affords its special privileges, and Pond Cay allows Depp to indulge in his hobbies, which include reading, playing guitar and painting. Quoting an WIESE S20 Vere sel old adage, he admits, “Money doesn’t buy you happiness. But it buys you a big enough yacht to sail right up to it.” What might have brought happiness to Depp recently is the fact that he has been among the world’s Most Beautiful People according to readers of WHO — Australia’s version of PEOPLE. Topping their list of international stars, Angelina Jolie, followed (in order) by Kate Winslet, Jessica Alba, Halle Berry and Jennifer Aniston. In the men’s vote, Johnny Depp took the crown, trailed (in descending order) by Brad Pitt, George Clooney, Orlando Bloom and David Beckham. When it came to picking apart the stars for their enviable body parts, the WHO readers included Depp again. The ideal guy, in their opinion, would consist of Hugh Jackman’s hair, eyes, nose, abs, backside, arms, chest and legs — with Brad Pitt’s mouth and Johnny Depp’s cheekbones.
