PURPOSE AND SCOPE ‘The purpose of this procedure is to attain zero defects on High Voltage (HV) power cable during the cable installation or puling process. Cable installation involves mechanical design considerations of the cable and when not installed properly may impair the operation of the cable under normal oF ‘emergency load conditions ultimately resulting in premature cable failure. Regardless of the method of installation, the most important factor is handing the degree of care, the discipline and the knowledge of laying a cable ina trench, or in a duct. High voltage cable installation should only be carried ‘out by a trained crew and closely supervised. tis important that mechanical damage does not occur during cable pulinglaying due to mishandling resulting in damage to outer sheath. The sheath faults seldom lead to a quick breskdown ofthe cable insulation. It may ‘take months from the time of damage before the appearance of cable faults) resulting in very expensive repair costs besides the losses due to outages. ‘Once the cable has been pulled or laid, utmost care has to be taken {ensure thatthe cable ends are propery secured and protected by means of ‘cable end caps so that no foreign material can enter the cable and particularly to guard against the ingens of water, olor ay other bqui, 2. No: PPISTSAC-ENLGAWOOI | Date: 90.03.2016 6.1, MAXIMUM SECTION LENGTH ‘The following imitations should be considered when designing or termining the maximum section length: ‘)Local restictions on trench lengths that can be opened ata time. 'b)Manufacturing imitations on one continuous length ©)Transportaton imitations <)Handling limitations at ste €)Permissible induced voltage at cable metalic sheathishield 4) Balancing of earthing circuls ofa cross-bonding system ‘9)Positioning of Joint Bays 6.2, MINIMUM BENDING RADIUS. ‘The permissible minimum bending radius for High Voltage Cables is sven by: 0 x OD of cable Where OD = overal diameter ofthe cable in mm. ‘Bending of cable at a short radius may permanently damage the insulation, shielding or jacket and ultimately causes cable to fall. Temporarily bending cable for short radius, then straightening the cable out to a longer radius may resuit in even more damage. Therefore care musi be taken to comply with the minimum bending radius of 20 x OD of the cable or as recommended by Cable Manufacturer for each cable. Under no circumstances should the cable be bent wih the radius smalier than the one prescribed by Cable Manufacturer. It is always. revommended to take larger radius then the minimum at offet portions or bending portions, taking thermal expansion ino account that may cause severer effects, METHOD STATEMENT FOR HV CABLE © GAMA INSTALLATION Page: _7/21 | Doc. No: PPIS-ISAG-ENL-GAMO0t | Date: 30.08.2016 DIRECT RURIAL. Cable route shall be selected to avoid excess bending portions andto keep them as few as possible. tis recommended that the bending radius at corners ‘should be maintained at least a fow times the minimum bending radius, preferably more than 5 meters, as larger radius provides lower side wall Pressure. Enough space shall be maintained inside the cable tench. Furthermore, it shall be confirmed from avallable records of existing services and utiies as Well as with sufficient numberof tral holes along the trench route, especially at joint bay locations, thatthe trench route has no obstructions. It shall also be confimed that no chemical agents, that could be harmful to the cable, ae presentin the surrounding soll and water along the route. ‘Always use a cable Puling Winch. when pulling cable mechanically by the pling winch, the cabling winch rope is coupled tothe cable by means ofthe pulling eye. The pulling tension is thus transferred to the conductor. Pulling tension should not exceed the: ‘maximum permissible puling tension recommended by Cable Manufacturer in their technical data, 64, CABLE DUCT SYSTEM Larger bending radius are generally required in duct systems as compared to direct buried eable, Since co-eficient of ftlon of dust ic larger than that of cable rollers used in direct burial installation, resulirg in higher pulling tensions, consezuently the maximum section lengths between joint bays is relatively shorter than that fr direct burial, “Therefore, each section length should be determined after careful cclculation ofthe puling tension and the sidewall pressure of the ‘corresponding section. ‘Coble exparsion from duct due to thermal expansion should also be ‘considered when dimensions of joint bays are determined. Offset METHOD STATEMENT FOR HV CABLE | © GAMA INSTALLATION Page: 0/21 | Doc. No: PPI-ISACENLGANOOT | Date. 90.03.2016 arrangements should be envisaged to absorb the thermal behaviour ofthe cable during its service tte. Fora single cable in a duct the mer dlameter ofthe duct should be greater than at least two times the outer diameter of the cable being pulled. Internal surface ofthe duct including the surface at joints shall be smocth ‘and fee from any defects such as protrusions, projection, cracks, scratch sharp edges etc., which may cause damage to cable outer sheath during pulling, Any sharp edges at both ends of the duct should be rounded off and pipe collars provided at ends. The PVC pipe colar should be installed at beth tends ofthe ducts so as to prevent the duct edges from damage. Immediately prior to the installation of the cable, the ducts shall be thoceughly cleaned using condul-cleaning devices to ensure that any small pebbles, sand or other foreign material is removed before cable is installed. Use mandrels wth a ameter 6 mm less than the duct siz to check for brecks lor sharp edges in the duct that would damage the cable. On completion of inspection put the guide rope by blowing into the pipe and connect to the winch pulling rope. Each duet should be provided with @ draw wire and both ends ofthe duct, should be plugged in a proper manner fo prevent ingress of any foregn ‘material like sol, sand, concrete, water etc. nly Winch puting shall be applied for cable duct instalation. The cabing winch ope is coupled to the cable by means of pulling eye. The puling tension is thus transferred to the conductor. The puling tension should not exceed the maxmum permissible puling tension recommended by cable manufacturer in their technical data 6.4.1. Lubrications of Cable “The use of cable ibrcants, as the cables are pulled ino ducts fessens the: table tensions and prevents any scratching of cable jackets due to ireqularies in ducts. A liberal use of ibricant is recommended for al puling operations, METHOD STATEMENT FOR HV CABLE © GAMA INSTALLATION Page: 921 5 PPISASACENL-GAN.O01 | Date 90.03.2016 ‘Only lubricants that are compatible with the outer sheath material (PVC, HDPE, andlor MOPE) shall be used. Petroloum based lubricant shall never bo used for any formation with polyethylene jackets, ‘The lubricant is usually applied tothe cable asthe eable enters the duct or the feeding tube. 6.5, CABLE TUNNEL Cable tunnel dimensions shalibe so designed as to secure enough space both for setting of cables on supporting structures and for installation and jointing works. The bending comers of the cable tunnel should also be designed to provide the permissible bending radius tothe cable with enough margins. |When cables are laid on cable racks or cable supports, they shall then be ‘xed with cable cleats or clamps at adequate intervals to absorb the thermal expansion and contraction with their lateral or vertical movement within the length between adjacent cleats. {f cables are laid without any binding, they may move according to the thermal behaviour and may drop trom the rack or supports. Further, the ‘metal sheath ofthe cable may be subjected to excessive strain at bent Portions where the thermal movement ofthe cable is pally concentrated. In order to avoid this movement, snake instalation Le. laying the cable in Uniform waveform, is usually applied along the route on racks or supports, to encourage the absorption ofthe cable movement smoothly. At the end of the cable route, the cable ends should be set straight and fixed with cable clamps before rising to the sealing ends. 6.6. SPECIAL CONSTRUCTION ‘There may be many types of special constructions along the cable routes, such as river crossings, road crossings, cable tunnel and cable bridges. ‘Special care must be taken to lay cables at such locations. Itis not possible to ist all countermeasures to cope with and cover every METHOD STATEMENT FOR HV CABLE © GAMA INSTALLATION Page: 1021] Doc. No: PPIS-ISACENL-GaNa0t | Date: 30032016 special construction; however, folowing are generally recognized as the basic key points that shouldbe taken Into account: 2) The thermal environment must be satisfactory. ') Any thermo-mechanical forces that could be experienced must be ‘adequately constrained or dissipated. {) Where Cables are exposed to ar, care must be duly taken of risks due to fire, vandalism, accidental damage by third party Cables must also be provided adequate protection against direct solar radiation ¢) Exposure to vibration €) Speciied bending radius must be observed. 7. CABLE LAYING ‘Most adequate method should be adopted to pull the cable considering ‘ste conditions so as to avoid ary damage to the cable due to excessive mechanical forces experienced during cable installation and to ensure an efficient instalation. It must be ensured that the cable to be installed can be pulled without ‘any damage or defect in terms of cable pulling design according to route drawings and site conditions. Preliminary study shall be made to determine proper cable laying method, direction of cable pull, arrangement of ‘toolslequipments. communication equipment, manpower and other necessary factors in order to achieve satisfactory cable instalation. “The most effective method of puling @ High Voltage cable is by nose paling with a cable eye fixed to the conductor. 7.1, CABLE PULLING DESIGN Inorder not to damage the cable during pulling, its recommended to pull te cable keeping both the puling tonsion and the sidewall pressure lesser than the permissible figures.
