DANCE EDUCATION LESSON PLAN
GRADE LEVEL & NUMBER OF STUDENTS: 4th grade, 36 students
TIME: 25-30 mins
EQUIPMENT: Cones with signs, basketballs, scarfs, jump ropes, hula hoops, steps, and boom box with
appropriate music.
OBJECTIVES:
Psychomotor
1. The student will use rhythmic patterns to develop general space awareness.
Cognitive
1. The student will demonstrate understanding of instructions and apply them to the rhythms and dance activity.
Affective
1. The student will learn how to share their general space with their group members.
CALIFORNIA K-5 DANCE and/or PE STANDARDS (identify whether Dance or PE, you can use both):
Introductory/Warm-up Activity: Dance 2.1. The students will create, develop, and memorize set movement
patterns and sequences.
Lesson Focus: Dance 1.1. The students will demonstrate mental concentration and physical control in
performing dance skills.
Closing/Cool Down Activity: Dance 2.1. The students will create, develop, and memorize set movement
patterns and sequences.

PART 1: INTRODUCTORY/WARM-UP ACTIVITY (2-5 mins):

Rocket Ship
In this activity students will place their hands over
their head creating a triangle. They will count
down from 10, as they count down they will get
lower and lower getting into a squat position at
number 5. When they go lower from number 5
they will be close to the ground at 0. They will yell
rocket ship, and run to the closest picture of a
planet in the classroom.

Explain and demonstrate what a squat position is


and what it looks like.
Encourage students to keep going.
Give positive feedback throughout the activity.

PART 3: LESSON FOCUS (15-20 mins):

cone will represent a different activity that
students will have to dance/move to the music.

Use scarves to dance along.

Use a whistle to move groups around


Give positive feedback such as (Great job,
fantastic, look at the moves, good job, I
love how everyone is moving to the
music).
When asking students to switch stations we
can ask them to gallop/skip, hop, jump,
slide, walk to another station/
Students will spend 30 seconds dancing/
moving along to the music per station.

PART 4: CLOSING/COOL DOWN ACTIVITY (2-5 mins):

Dance Little Bird (The Chicken Dance)
In this activity, students will get in a circle and and
make hand movements representing a chicken and
a duck. Then they will travel move in unison
clockwise. Then repeat hand movements.

Explain and demonstrate to students what the


movements for a chicken and a duck are. During
the break of the song tell the students which
direction they should be moving in (clockwise).

Modifications for students with disabilities (2):


1. If students cannot skip, gallop, or hop to the next station then they can walk.
