In the past, people had neither electric lamps nor gas stoves. If they wanted light, they had
to use oil lamps. If they wanted to cook or keep themselves warm, they had to use firewood. It
took a long time for people to cook their food. Burning firewood also produced a lot of smoke
which polluted the air. Besides, oil lamps and firewood were dangerous because they caused fires
easily.
There were not many roads in the past and fuel was expensive. People travelled by either
bicycle or rickshaw.
