PROBLEM SET 2
1. A large spherical tank (see Figure 1) contains
gas at a pressure 0f 450 psi. the tank is 42 ft in
diameter and is constructed of high-strength
steel having a yield stress of 80 ksi. Determine
the required thickness of the wall of the tank if a
factor of safety of 3.5 with respect to yielding is
required.

PROBLEM SET 2
2. The rigid bar BDE is supported by two links AB
and CD. Link AB is made of aluminum (E = 70
GPa) and has a cross-sectional area of 500 mm2;
link CD is made of steel (E = 200 GPa) and has a
cross-sectional area of 600 mm2. For the 30-KN
force shown, determine the deflection (a) of B,
(b) of D, (c) of E. (see Figure 2)

3. A compound bar consisting of bronze,
aluminum, and steel segments is loaded axially
as shown in Figure 3. Determine the maximum
allowable value of P if the change in length of
the bar is limited to 2 mm and the working
stresses prescribed in the table are not to be
exceeded.

4. The steel bars AC and BC, each of crosssectional area 120 mm2, are joined at C with a
pin. Determine the displacement of C caused by
the 15-KN load. Use E = 200 GPa for steel. (see

5. The data (see Figure 5) were recorded during
a tensile of a 14.0mm-diameter mild steel rod.
The gage length was 50.0 mm.
Plot the stress-strain diagram and determine the
following mechanical properties: (a)
proportional limit; (b) modulus of elasticity; (c)
yield stress; (d) ultimate stress.
