Math-Measurement Lesson #2

Goal: Students are reviewing measuring length using centimeters. They are also starting
to realize different referents for centimeters.

-Students begin the lesson with a review of measuring length in centimeters using rulers.
-Teacher asks where we start on the ruler (0). What is our unit of measurement? Write
centimeters on the board.
-They are assigned p. 148 # 4 a b c d e as independents work (b and d are done off to the
right of their page). Work to be completed in math notebooks.
-Teacher circulates and marks to check that students understand this concept before
moving on.
-Students who are finished move onto ‘Explore’ on p. 149 (with a partner?):

Estimate, and record, the length of:

*your hand
*your thumb
*your arm
*your foot

-Teacher emphasizes that students ESTIMATE first, record their estimation, and then
measure to check how close they were (model on blackboard).
-Students are listing their findings, for example:
Hand - Estimation: 10 cm
Actual: 17 cm
-Students may need to come up with a strategy to measure the length of their arm.
