    debatingonwhathewilldo,hepondersonhischildhoodandthetraditionsthathis
    JewishfamilyusedtopartakeinontheDayofAtonement,whichalwaysremindedthem
    thatGodwaswiththemandwouldneverforsakethem.EventhoughElieoftenreturned
    tohisfaithinGod,thereweremomentswhenhisdoubtovercamehim,makinghim
    thinkthatGodwouldnotalwaysbewithhim.EliestatedYes,manisstronger,greater
    thanGod(andthatHewas)allowingthemtobetortured,slaughtered,gassed,and
    burned(Wiesel67,68).AlthoughElieseemedtooccasionallyturnawayfromhisfaith,
    healwayscamebacktotheLordbecauseheknewthathisremainingstrengthderived
    fromHimandthatamancouldneverbeasgreatashisGod.Eliealsofeltguiltyafter
    hehadhadthoughtsabouttheLordabandoninghim,whichledtohimprayingfor

    forgiveness.EliewouldnotlethisfaithinGodbeshakenbecauseElieknewthatGod
    wastheonlyonewhowouldalwaysbewithhimnomatterwhatcircumstancesarrived.
