Thebeggarsclosein.WhenBeckertfinallyrealizesheisbeingfollowed,hehidesinsidealargeoffice
buildingjustbeforetheworkersleavefortheevening.ThebeggarscallDerSchrnker,andateamof
criminalsarrives.Theytieupandtortureaguardforinformation.Aftercapturingtheremainingwatchmen,
theysystematicallysearchthebuildingfromcoalcellartoattic,finallycatchingBeckert.Whenawatchman
managestotripthesilentalarm,thecrooksnarrowlyescapewiththeirprisonerbeforethepolicearrive.
One,however,iscapturedandeventuallytrickedintorevealingthepurposeofthebreakin(nothingwas
stolen)andwhereBeckertwouldbetaken.
ThecriminalsdragBeckerttoanabandoneddistillerytofaceakangaroocourt.Hefindsalarge,silent
crowdawaitinghim.Beckertisgivena"lawyer",whogamelyarguesinhisdefensebutfailstowinany
sympathyfromthe"jury".Beckertdeliversanimpassionedmonologue,sayingthathisurgescompelhimto
