Heknowsthatwhichgoesintotheearthandthatwhichcomesforthfromit,andthatwhichdescendfrom
theheavenandthatwhichascendstoit.AndHeisArRaheem,AlGhafoor.
IntheQuran,Allahtaalamentionsmorethan70timesthatHeisAlGhafoorurRaheem.Thisayahabove
istheonlyinstanceinthewholeQuranthattheorderisreversed:ArRaheemulGhafoor.
Why?
ImamibnulQayyimstatesthatifyoustudyilm(knowledge)intheQuran,youllfindthatAllahtaala
mentionsrahmah(mercy)withit.Herearesomeexamples:
OurLord!Youcomprehendallthingsinmercyandknowledge(40:7)
Theduaaofthosewellgroundedinknowledge(arraasikhoon)is:
(Theysay):OurLord!Letnotourheartsdeviate(fromthetruth)afterYouhaveguidedus,andgrantus
mercyfromYou.Truly,YouaretheBestower.
AllahtaalabeginsthisayahfromsurahSabawith

WhenweexamineGhafoorintheQuran,ormaghfirah(forgiveness),wenoticethatitispairedwith
humans.Hereisanexample:
Nuhalayhisalaamtohisdisbelievingnationsaid:
Isaid(tothem):AskforgivenessfromyourLordVerily,HeisOftForgiving(71:10)
InthisayahfromsurahSaba,doweseeadirectaddresstohumans?Thereismentionoftheearth,what
comesfromthesky,whatascendsHumansarementionedindirectly,andbyexaminingthisindirect
address,wecanseewhyRaheemismentionedbeforeGhafoor.
Howso?
Heknowsthatwhichgoesintotheearth:Weplaceseedsintotheearth,but

furthermore,wewillalsogointotheearthoneday.Wewillneedtherahmah(Mercy)ofArRaheemwhen
wegointotheearth.
Andthatwhichcomesfromit:Theplantgrowsfromtheearth,butfurthermore,wewillone
dayberesurrectedfromtheearth.Weaskforandneedthemaghfirah(forgiveness)ofAlGhafoorwhen
wecomeoutoftheearth.
andthatwhichdescendsfromtheheavens:Rainisarahmah(mercy)uponus,wahy
(revelation)comesfromtheskyandisalsoarahmahuponus,ourrizq(provision)comesfromthesky
whichisalsoarahmahuponus.
andthatwhichascendstoit(thesky):Whatascendstothesky?Ourduaa,oursouls,and
deeds.WhatdoweneedinallthreeoftheseinstancesfromAllahtaala?Maghfirah(forgiveness),forour
duaasanddeedstobeaccepted,andoursoulstobeforgiven.
ThenAllahtaalaendstheayahwiththesubjectonthisgem:
AndHeistheThe
EspeciallyMerciful,theMostForgiving.
EachpartofthisayahconnectswiththesetwoNamesofAllah,intheorderthattheyappear.
SubhanAllah.
ThemostcommoncriticsmoftheQuranisthattheversesrepeattoomuchandtheayaatareallthesame
inalotofsurahs.ButwhenwepayattentiontotheQuran,whenwetrulyponder,thenweseethatthereis
actuallylittlerepitition.Thesearenotordinarywords,theyareDivineWordsthathaveaprofoundwisdom.
Inspeech,therearetwoparts:
1Content:whatyousay.TheQuranhasDivinecontent.
2Style:howyousayit.TheQuranpresentsthiscontentinaprofoundandmiraculousstyle.
Humansarenotcapableofhavingbothcontentandstyleconstantly.Takeforexamplethefamousquotes
weallknow,Ihaveadreamorthereisnothingtofearbutfearitself.Thesequotescamefrom
speeches,buttheonlypartweknoworrememberarethosefewwords.
ThisQuran,theseblessedwordsofAllahazzawajal,constantlykeepsbothcontentandstyleandby
ponderingovertheseversesinahumblemanner,wecantasteafewdropsofthesewisdoms.

AllahistheWaliofthosewhobelieve,Hebringstakethemfromthedarknessesintothelight.
andthosewhodisblievetheirAwliyaaaretaghoot,theybringthemoutofthelighttodarknesses.
Waliisaspecialtypeoffriend,whoexpressesthewilltohelptoyouandsupportyou.Awaliisafriend
thatyouturntoforhelp,protectionandsupport.Thewaliistheprimaryintherelationship,theyarethe
dominantparty.Takeforexample,ifafatheristhewalitohisson,thenthefatheristheprimaryinthe
relationship.
AllahtaalasaysinthebeginningoftheayahthatHeistheWaliforthebelievers.Thosewhodisbelieve
haveTaghoot(anythingandeverythingthatisworshippedbesidesAllah)astheirAwliyaa(pluralofwali).
Therearetwocomparisonstakingplaceinthisverse:firstly,thebelieversandthosewhodisbelieve,and
secondly,Allahazzawajalandtaghoot.Lookingattheverseagain,weseethatthereisadifferent
arrangementforeachcomparison:whenAllahtaalasaysHeistheWaliofthebelievers,Hecomesfirst.
Butforthosewhodisbelieve,theirwaliismentionedlast.
Whyisthearrangmentdifferent?
Allahtaalaisbeingcomparedtotaghoot,yet:laysakamithlihishayy,thereisNOTHINGlikeHim,
NOTHINGcanbecomparedtoHim.Thesetaghootdonotdeservetobementionedinthesameplaceas
Allahazzawajalwasmentioned.Theydonotdeservetobementionedineventhesamesentence.

ThatisbecausecertainlyAllahistheMawlaaofthosewhobelieve,andindeedthedisbelievershaveno
Mawlaa.
MawlaaismorethanaWaliaMawlaaissomeonewhocanprotectyouandactuallydoessotheyare
protectingyou,whileaWaliissomeonewhoiswillingtoprotectyou.
WhenitcametoWali,boththebelieversanddisbelievershadone,butwhenitcomestoMawlaasomeone
whoCANprotectyoutheyhavenoMawlaa.

IntheQuran,thereisarelationshipbetweenoathsandwhatfollowstheoaths.WhenAllahtaalaswears
bysomething,itshowstheimportanceoftheobjectHeisswearingbyandthatobjectwillbeelevated.
Furthermore,whatevercomesaftertheoathisveryimportantaswell.Therearemanyexamplesinthe
Quran,herearetwoofthem:
AllahtaalasaysinSuratulAadiyaat,
Bythe(steeds)thatrun,withpanting(breath),
Strikingsparksoffire(bytheirhooves),
Andscouringtotheraidatdawn
Andraisethedustincloudsthewhile,
Penetratingforthwithasoneintothemidst(oftheenemy).(100:15)
Makkeesurahshaveamazingimagery,andthesefirstfiveversesarededicatedtohorsesinbattle.Backin

Thehorsesbeingdescribedherearefeminine(
),why?TheArabspreferredthefemalehorsesin
battlebecausetheywerefaster.Allahazzawajalisdescribingthehorsesinthemorningtime,whenthere
isstillmoistureintheairandinsteadofthedustrisingasitdoesinadesert,themoisturecausesthedustto
settle.Imagine:thesehorseswhoarefastbynature,runningsofastthattheyarecausingthedusttoriseup
evenwiththemoisture,sparksareflyingeventhoughthereismoistureontherocks,andtheydontsee
infrontofthembecauseofthedustintheairnotknowingifthereisanenemyorspearwaitingontheother
side.
ThinkoftheamazementofthenonMuslimslisteningtotheProphetalayhisalaatuwasalaamrecitethese
versesAnyoneamongstthemwhohasahorserealizedhowloyaltheirhorseistothemhowitwilleven
dieforitsownerjustoutofsubmissiontothemaster.
Thenrightaftertheseamazingimages,Allahtaalasays:
IndeedmanisnotloyaltohisRabb!(100:6)Justasthishorsesubmitstoitsmaster,goingintotheenemy
rangewithoutevenknowingwhatisthere,completelyloyaltotheMasterAllahtaalaremindsthem:man
isnotloyaltohisRabb.
Notonlythathesnotloyalbutalso:

Andtothatfacthebearswitness(100:7)
Manbearswitnesstothefactthatheisnotloyal!Heknows!How?Allahazzawajaljustremindedthem
oftheloyaltyofthesteedstotheirownerinthepreviousversesifyourhorsesubmitstoyou,thenwhydo
younotsubmittoyourOwner?

AnotherexampleofoathsintheQuranisSurahMursalaat.
Thereisadifferenceofopinionifmursalaatreferstoangelsorwinds,butinaliterarycontext,windsisa
moreappropriatedefinition.
Allahazzawajalsays:
andbythewindsthatscatter:urfliterallymeansthemaneofahorse.Ifahorsehasno
reins,therideronlyhasthemanetoholdontoo,andiftheriderletsgo,thehorsewillgowild.
ThisfirstayahisshowinghowifAllahtaalaletawindgo,itwouldspreadwildlywithoutcontrol.
andbythewindsthatblowviolently:thefaatthebeginningofthisverseshowsreason,
duetoo,becauseofthemursalaatiurfaa:alaasifaatiasfa.asfliterallymeansinconsideratemovement,
suchasabulldozer.(Thinkofacarcomingstraightatyouonthehighway,ifthatcardoesntmove,and
ramsrightintoyouthatisasf)Itisamercilesswindthatdestroyseverythinginitspath.
Inthesetwoverses,Allahtalaaistalkingaboutwindsthatbringsdestruction.Why?Thisisamakkee
surah,andAllahtaalaisremindingtheQurayshthosewhomockattheProphetsalAllahualayhiwa
sallamtobringthepunishmentthesewindsofpunishmentCANbeletgoandithasbeendonebefore,no
intricateplanningorarrangementisrequiredforyourdestruction.InSuratulHaqqah,Allahtaaladescribes
thesceneofAadwhoweredestroyedbyawind:foreightdaystheirwholecitywerebeingtossedaround
likeitwasnothing.
ThenAllahtaalasaysinthenextayah:
andbythewindsthatscatter:thisayahbeginswithawasoweknowitisanewoath.
Allahtaalaswearsbythewindsthatdonashr.Nashrmeanstospreadrandomlyallover,suchastheactof
takingseedsandscatteringthemonthesoil.Annaashiraatarethosewindsthatdistribute.Whatdothey
distribute?Cloudsthatbringtherain.Ifthesewindsdidnotdistributetheclouds,thencitieswouldsuffer
fromdrought.Modernsciencelearnsnowthatpollenisalsodistributedbywinds,sowithoutthesewinds
therewouldbenovegetation.Thesenaashiraatdistributefromboththesky(rain)andtheground
(vegetation).
Thisverseshowsthelifethatthewindscarry,whilethefirsttwoversesdisplayeddeathanddestruction.
Allahazzawajalcontinues:
andbythosewindsthatseparate:farqmeanstodistributeandseparate,withaveryprecise
division.
Thesewindsdistributemercy,justasthefirsttwowindssentpunishment.Thisverseshowsusthatallof
thesewinds,eitherbringingmercyorpunishment,arepreciselydistributed.
andbythosethatdeliveramessage:Bothofthesewinds,theonesofmercyandtheonesof
destruction,carryareminderforthepeople.Thewindsofmercyremindusthatthesewindsbringrain,
whichisarizq(provision)fromthesky,showingwearetotallydependentonAllahtaala,suchasaman
whoisfeedingacagedanimaltheanimalistotallydependentonthemaster.Theseversesremindusno
matterhowdisobedientorhowwildweare:wedependtotallyonAllah.Whentherainfallsfromthesky
thatthesewindshavescattered,weseethedeadearthbeingbroughttolife,remindingusthatwewillbe
resurrectedjustasthedeadland.
Theseremindersare:
asajustificationortowarn:uthrameanstoreceiveanexcuseoralesson,oranignoring.
Therearetwopeoplementionedinthisverse:thosewhotakeareminderofthesewinds,andthosewho
ignorethereminder.
Buteitherway:
Surely,whatyouhavebeenpromisedwilldefinitelycometopass:thepromiseoftheDay
ofJudgment,ofResurrectionandthedestructionofthosewhodisobeyAllah.Thosewhoenjoythemercy
ofthesewinds,therain,thevegetation,therizq,theywillbedestroyed.
MayAllahtaalamakeusamongthosewhobenefitfromthereminder,Ameen.

waisusedandonewayiswowalmustanifah,thewowthatseparatesonesentence
fromanother.IntheEnglishlanguage,wewouldputaperiodandcapitalizethenextwordinthesentence
toshowthatanewoneisbeginning.
Sothis
wowintheayahisanindicationofanewsentence,thesentenceis:

letters,howmanytimesthiswordcomes,howmanytimesthatlettercomesandmoreThestudyof
statisticsintheQuranstartedinthesecondorthirdcentury.
TheQuranisachallengeforhumanityitdoesntcompromisestyleandcontentsoifsomeoneintendedto
duplicatethisbook,theywouldhavetohaveboth.Racecarhasthestyle(ofapalindrome),butitdoesnot
havethesamecontentasRabbakafaKabir.
Evenifthehumansandjinnweretogettogether,theychoseanylanguage,wouldtheybeabletocreate
RabbakafaKabirasapalindromethatcontainsbothcontentandstyle?

ThenHetaalasaysinayah77:
Hehasselectedyou(muslims).
BothofthesewordscarrythesameEnglishmeaningofselectionortochoose,yetthereisaprofound
differencebetweenthetwowhichshowstheprecisechoiceofthesewords.
Istafaaisfromtherootsaadfawow()anditmeanstobechosenbasedonpurity.WhenAllah
taalaselectsMessengers,Heselectsthepurestofmankind.Welearnthisfromourcreed(aqeedah)thatthe
Messengersareallpure.TheJewsandChristiansontheotherhanddidnotkeepthisstandardandintheir
booksthattheyclaimtobedivine,therearereferencestotheseMessengersthatarelewdandhorrifying.
Whenwehearanythinghorrendous,weautomaticallyknowitiswrongbasedonthisayah.Weknowit
cannotbefromtherevelationbecauseitquestionsthepurityoftheMessengers.
Anothermeaningofistafaaistomakeachoicethatispurelyyourown,noexplanationisneededforthis
choiceanditisfreefromanyagendas,pressuresanddictates.Thisprotectsanotheraspectofthe
Messengers.AtthetimeoftheProphetsalAllahualayhiwasallam,theJewsandtheQurayshdeniedthe
MessengershipoftheProphetsalAllahualayhiwasallamjustbecausehewasnotJewishornotrichthey
questionedthechoiceofAllahtaala.AllahsChoiceisBEYONDourquestion,andbyusingistafaa
Allahtaalamakesthatclear.WecannotsaytheMessengeralayhisalaatuwasalaamwaspickedforX,Y
orZreasonsweshouldstopat:AllahchoseHim.
Ijtibaaontheotherhandisfromjeembaya(),Ijtibaaistopicksomethingforapurpose,an
agenda,andbasedonqualifications.Forexample,thiswordisusedtocollecttaxes,andwhencollecting
taxesthereisapurpose:tostorethemoneyinthetreasury.Anotherexampleiswhenarecruiterhiresan
employee:hechoosesbasedonthequalificationsoftheemployee.Thereisareasonforijtibaa.
EveryonewhohasthepriviledgeofsayinglailaahailAllahhasbeenselected.Allahtaaladidnotjust
selectus,butthereisareason,somethingthatHetaalaseesinusthatHeseesusasqualifiedforthistask
andthemissionofthisummah.Thevastmajorityofthepeopleonthisearthwerenotchosenyetwemake
upthesmallminorityofthosewhomAllahtaalaselected.
Thisshowsgreathonor,butatthesametime:greatresponsibility.SubhanAllah.
ThesetwoexamplesarefromSuratulHajj,anditconnectswiththelastayahofthissurahwhichisan
emotionalrollercoaster:

AllahasHedeserves.Theayahabovebeginswithanimpossiblegoal:

strugglebeforeAllahasmuchasHedeserves.SubhanAllah!CanweeverthankAllahasHedeserves?
CanweeverpraytoAllahasHedeserves?CanweeverfearAllahasHedeserves?Thefirstthingwe
thinkofwhenreadingthisstatementisthatwecannotdoit!Itstoodifficult!

Butdirectlyafterthisstatement,Allahazzawajalsays:
Heselectedyou.Allahazzawajalsees
itinustocarrythistask.
FurthermoreHesays:
Hedidnotplaceinthisdeenforyouany
constriction.Ourdeenisnotthathard.
ThenHeremindsusthatwearethecontinuationofalegacybeforeus:
thereligionof
yourfatherIbrahim(alayhisalaam).Ibrahimalayhisalaamstruggledsomuchinhislife:hewasthrown
intothefire,soughttoslaughterhisbelovedson,leavinghiswifeandchildinthedesert.Imagineifwe
werelateincominghome,andourphoneswereoffandwecouldnotbereached,whathappenstoour
mothers?Andifwearemothers,whatdowethink?Imaginethosethoughts,andnowimaginehow
Ibrahimalayhisalaamfelt:leavinghischildandwifeinabarrendesert,acertaindeath!Thelastthingwe
thinkofabouthislifealayhisalaamisthatitwaseasy,yetAllahtaalasaysthatthereisnoharaj(hardship)
inthisdeen.
Whatisthelessonhere?IfAllahtaalacanmakejumpingintothefireeasyforIbrahim,ifHecansubstitute
araminplaceofhisson,ifHecansendariverinthemiddleofthedesertforhisfamilythenwhatdoyou
havethatissohard?Thereisnocomparison.
ThenAllahtaalaremindsusthat:
HeistheonewhonamedyouMuslims,thereisa
differenceofopinioniftheheinthisayahisAllahtaalaorIbrahimalayhisalaam.InSuratulBaqarah,

Nowwerealizethemagnitudeofourmission,butbeforeyoubecomeuneasy,Allahtaalaconsolesus
again:
thenperfectlyestablishtheprayerandgivezakah.Salahisthetherapyand
reinforcementfortheMuslim,andthroughgivingzakah,Allahtaalaensuresourpurification.Andifyou
wanttoprayandgivezakahproperly:
andholdfasttoAllah.HoldfasttotheropeofAllah,
theQuran.

MayAllahtaalamakeuscompanionsoftheQuran.Ameen.
Ivebeenrealizinghowtruethestatementthemoreyoulearn,thelessyouknowis.SubhanAllahas
manyQuranclassesyouormyselfhavetaken,thebottomlineisthatwecanneverfinishstudyingthe
Quranthereisalwayssomethingtolearn.
OnWednesdaynightwelearnedabouttheMiraculousAyah,Quranicgem#six:
Thewordayah()iscommonlytranslatedasverseinEnglish,yetthisdefinitionisnotproper
becauseitdoesnotcapturethetruemeaningofAyah.WhenyoumentionversetoanEnglishspeaking
person,itremindsthemofthreethings:theBible,poetryorasong.TheproblemisthattheQurandenies
beingsimilartoanyofthesethings,soversedoesnotgivethecorrectconnotationofayah.
Anotherdefinitionofayahissentence,yetanayahisnotasentence.Forexample,thefirstthreeayaat
(pluralofayah)fromFaatihahareasentence,butthreeseparateayaat.Also,ayataddaynisonepagelong,
yetitsonlyoneayah.Multipleayaatcanmakeonesentence,andoneayahcouldbeaparagraph.Thebest
translation(accordingtobrotherNouman)is:amiraculoussign.
OneexamplefromtheQuranhowayahcannotbetranslatedinfromSurahFath(48).
HeitisWhosentdownAsSakinah(calmnessandtranquility)intotheheartsofthebelievers,thatthey
maygrowmoreinFaith(emaan)alongwiththeir(present)Faith.AndtoAllahbelongthesoldiersofthe
heavensandtheearth,andAllahisEverAllKnower,AllWise.(48:4)
ThissurahwasrevealedaftertheTreatyofHudaibiyyah(articlehere),atreatythatwasenactedbetween
theMuslimsofMadinahandtheQurayshwhentheMuslimstraveledwiththeintentiontoperformumrah.
AllahazzawajalsaysthatHesentdownSakinah(tranquility)intotheheartsofthebelievers.Why?So
thattheyputtheirtrustinAllahtaalaeventhoughtheycannotmakeumrah,thereisgoodinit.
Hesaysintheaboveayah:
andtoAllahbelongsthesoldiersoftheheavensand

theearth.ThisstatementappearstwicewhenAllahtaalamentionsthebelieversinayahfour,andinayah
seven,afterHementionsthehypocrites.
Inayahsix,Allahtaalamentionthehypocritesandtheirpunishment:
AndthatHemaypunishtheMunafiqoon(hypocrites),menandwomen,andalsotheMushrikoonmen
andwomen,whothinkevilthoughtsaboutAllah,forthemisadisgracefultorment,andtheAngerofAllah
isuponthem,andHehascursedthemandpreparedHellforthem,andworstindeedisthatdestination.
(48:6)
Takeadeeperlookatthisarrangement:
WhenAllahtaalamentionsthebelievers,HementionsintheSAMEayahthatHeownsthesoldiersofthe
heavensandtheearthbecausethebelieversbelongtothearmiesofAllah!
YetwhenAllahtaaladescribesthehypocrites,HementionsthatHeownsthesoldiersoftheheavensand
theearthinthenextayah.AllahtaalaSEPARATESthembyseparatingtheayah.Theydonotbelongin
thearmiesofAllah,yettheyclaimtobeamongstthebelievers.
Attheendofayah4,AllahsaysHeis:
AllKnowing,AllWise,andinayah7HesaysHeis:
AllMighty,AllWise.Aleemaappearswiththebelievers,andAzeezaappearswiththe
hypocrites.
Aleemanismentionedwiththebelieversbecausethebelieverswereinafrustratingpositionwiththis
Treatyandhavingbeenstoppedfromperformingumrah,yettheonlyonewhoknewitwasavictorywas
Allahazzawajal.HegavethebelieverstranquilitybecauseHeisHakeemAllWise.OutofHisUltimate
Wisdom,Heknewthissituationwasgoodforthem,whethertheyknewitornot.
Azeezanismentionedwiththehypocritesbecausetheydidnotgowiththebelieverstoperformumrah.
Reasonbeingthattheydidnotwanttoencounterthemushriksforthesecondtimeaftertheysurrounded
MadinahduringtheBattleofAhzaab(orKhandaq/ditch)forweeksafewmonthsprior.Thisbattlewasthe
onlytimethatthesoldiersoftheopposingsideweremoreinnumberthantheactualinhabitantsofthecity!
AllahazzawajalgavevictorytothebelieversAllahtaalasentawind(mentionedin33:9)tohelpthem.
ThehypocritesdidnottravelwiththebelieversaftertheProphetsalAllahualayhiwasallamreceivedthe
dreamtogoforumrahbecausetheythoughtthismeetingwastooearly,havingjustmetthemushriksat
Ahzaabtheysawitasgoingstraightintothemouthofthewolfandthatthebelieverswouldbekilled.
Theythought:

thattheMessengerandthebelieverswouldneverreturntotheirfamilies(48:12)Sowhatdidtheydo?
TheybeganplanningwhowouldtakeauthorityofMadinah,butAllahtaalaisAzeez:Authoritybelongs
toHim.Theyhadconfidenceintheirauthority,asAllahsays:
andthatwasmade
fairseemingintheirhearts(48:12)TheonlyreasonthatAllahtaalahasntshownthemHisAuthorityis
becauseHeisHakeem:itisallpartofaplanthatHeKnows.

Alsoifyounotice,Allahtaalausedkasaboo(theyearned)andnotamiloo(theydid/worked),
becausekasabameanstoearnsomethingwithyourhands,throughhardworkandlabor,toearn
somethingsothesepeoplenotonlyaskforthedunyaandaakhirah,theyWORKforit.Thisistrue
tawakkul.
TheseversesareinthepartofBaqarahthatistalkingabouthajj,andthesetwoayaatarereferringto
thosehujjajandwhatduaastheymake.Whenwemakeduaa,wearefocusedonwhatwereally
thosehujjajandwhatduaastheymake.Whenwemakeduaa,wearefocusedonwhatwereally
want,soimaginesomeonemakingtawaforatarafatandtheyareaskingforthedunyaonly!

Quran:thefirstoneisMadyanandthesecondoneisAshaabulAykah(companionsofthetree).Aykah
referstoagianttreethattheyusedtoworship.
So,whenitcomestolocation,thecityisreferredtoasMadyan.Whenitcomestothepeople,thecityis
referredtoasAshaabulAykah.

Certainlythatisfromthenobletasks.
Whenthisstatementoccurs,itisalwaysinreferencetosabr(patience).
However,whenthisstatementappearsinSurahShoora(42),somethingdifferentoccursthatdoesnotinall
theotherayaat.Allahazzawajalstates:
Trulythatiscertainlyfromthenobletasks.(42:43)
Thisayahisaspecialcasebecausethereisanextraletter,alaam.Thislaamisforemphasis:certainly.But
whydoesthisayahhavemoreemphasis,buttherestofthesimilarayaatdonot?Itisbecausetherearetwo
differenttypesofpatience(sabr)beingreferencedforthesetwoayaat.
Therearemanytypesofsabrinthisdeen,buttheyallfallintotwobasiccategories:
1. Whensomethinghappenstoyouandyouhavethepowertorespondandtakeaction(ie,
revenge/retaliate).
2. Whensomethinghappenstoyouandyoudonothavethepowertorespond.
Herearesomeexamplesthatdisplaythesetwotypesofpatience:
Someonestealingyourcar(powertotakeaction)vs.yourcargettingdamagedinastorm.
Gettingfoodpoisoningfromarestaurantvsgettingacoldonyourown.
Someonepushingyouvssomeonewithaweaponpushingyou.
Insituationswhenyoucannottaketakeaction,itisstillagreatthingtohavepatience.Forexamplethe
sahabainMakkah,theydidnothavethepowertoretaliatebutAllahtaalastillcommandedthemtohave
patienceandHepraisedthosewhowerepatient.AlsowiththeBattleofUhudorAhzaab,theydidnot
havethepowertoretaliatebutstillhadpatienceintheirsituation.
ThentheConquestofMakkahoccured,andthosewhooverpoweredtheSahababefore,thosewhokicked
themoutoftheirhomes,thosewhotorturedthemandtheirfamilieswererightthereeasilyabletotake
revenge.DoesTHATnotrequiresabr?Whichsabrismoredifficult?Itisthesabrthatonepracticeswhen
theyhavetheABILITYtotakerevengeandretaliate,buttheydonot!
Allahtaalamentionedinthesameayahbeforethatstatement:
andfortheonewhohas
patienceandforgivesThispersoncouldhavehadsabr,andretaliatedBUTtheyhadsabrandchoseto
forgivesothisayah,theonlytimeitoccursintheQuran,getsanextralaam.

ThebeautyofthesedialoguesisthatAllahazzawajalcouldhavetolduswhathappened,butratherHe
chosetoconveytousintheformofdialogue.
OnesubcategoryofdialoguesintheQuranistheideaoftransitions.IntheQuran,Allahtaaladisplays
transitionsthathelpusastheaudiencevisualizethescene.
AnamazingexampleofbothdialoguesandtransitionsintheQuranisfromSurahShuara(26),thestory
ofMusaalayhisalaamandFirawn.

accidentalkillingoftheEgyptianman,andiftheykillhimandhecannotfulfillthemission,Haroonalayhi

Allahazzawajalrespondstohim:

notrespondtoMusaalayhisalaamsaying,Haroonwillbeamessenger,butAllahsSpeechisconcise,
Hesaid:fathhabaa,bothofyougo!
thereisnodoubtthatIwillbealongsidelistening(15)Thedialogueabouttotake
placenowbetweenMusaalayhisalaamandFirawnissoimportantthatwemustlistenclosely.Why?
BecauseAllahazzawajalsaidHimselfthatHewas
onewholistensattentively,Hedidnot
evensaysmusmeoon:onewholistens,but
,onewholistenscarefullyandclosely.
Allahazzawajalinstructsthem:
AndwhenyoubothcometoFirawn,say:WearetheMessenger
oftheRabboftheAlameen(16).Rasoolissingular,becausetheyarepresentingthemselvesasoneentity,
theyareinseperable.
Letslookmoreatthesituation:Musaalayhisalaamisafugitiveintheireyes,andHaroonalayhisalaamis
fromapeople,whoaccordingtoFirawn,aresecondclasscitizens.ThentheyhavetogotoFirawn,directly
tohispalaceandsaywearemessengersfromRabbalAalameen.Firawnalreadyclaimedandthoughthe

ungrateful.(19)Firawnisbeingsarcasticbyusingfaalta,hedoesntevensaythemurderoftheman
becauseheisunderminingandthreateningMusaalayhisalaam.SoFirawn,insteadofrespondingtothe
requestsofMusaalayhisalaam:questionshisloyalties(didwenotraiseyouup?)andsuggeststhatheisa
criminal.
Atthispointinthedialogue,itseemsthatFirawnhastheupperhand.ButofMusasalayhisalaamgenius,
headdressessomeofwhathesaysandhegoesinorderofimportance:

InArabic,therearemeansinwhichyoucanempowerastatementandalsoweakenitindegrees.Allah
taalasays:
AndifabreathoftheTormentofyourRabbtouchesthem,theywillsurelycry:Woeuntous!Indeedwe
havebeenwrongdoers.(21:46)
Theayahbeginswith:
if,asentencediscussingrealityisgreaterthanonediscussingapossibilitysothissentencestartsof
weak,becauseitisreferringtoifthiswouldoccur,ithasnothappenedyet.
ittouchedthem,thisisafil*.Grammaticallywhenastatementbeginswithanism*itismore
powerfulthanwhenitcomeswithafil.Thiswordisalreadypasttense=somethingthathasalready
occurredonce.Presenttenseandfuturetensecontinues,butpasttestisweaker,thereforeless.
Furthermore,therearemanywordstodescribetheactoftouching/hittingsomeoneinArabic,suchas
daraba(tostrike)andlaqiya(tomeet/clash).Thisayahhoweverusestheleastdegreeofcontact,
somethingthatbarelytouchesyou:mass.
Alreadythisstatementisveryweak:theweakestpossiblebeginningofasentence,theweakestpossible
structureandtense,andtheweakestpossibleformofcontact.
ThenAllahsays:
awind,whiff.Nafhatunisawindthatisbarelynoticeablycoolwind.Ifthiswasawarmwind,
thenitwouldbealafhah.
Thisstatementhasgottenweakerandweaker:Eveniftheslightestcoolbreezetouchedthemonce.
frompunishment.Thecoolestbreezeisabreezeofpunishment.Allahtaalasays:Nafhatunmin
athaab,abreezeFROMthepunishment:anotherwayofweakeningthestatement.
Whosepunishment?AllahtaaladoesnotsayHispunishment,orthepunishmentoftheFire,butHe
chooses:
yourRabb.IntheQuran,Rabbcomeswiththementionofmercy(rahmah).Rabbis:The
Owner,TheProvider,TheCherisher,TheSustainerwhendescribingthepunishment,Heusesthemost
lenientofNamesandevenmoresoHesays:yourRabb:theProphet(salAllahualayhiwasallam).Allah
taalacouldhavesaidRabbalAalameen:Rabbofallthatexistsbecausethenthepeoplewouldbeworthy
ofpunishment,butratherAllahtaalamentionedtheonewhomHeisMOSTMercifultoo:Muhammadsal
Allahualayhiwasallam.
Thefirsthalfofthisayahshowsusthatthereisnowayyoucouldpunishsomeoneless:itstheleast
contact,onlyapartofthebreezeandnotfromthewholebreeze,andwhenHesendsthepunishment,itis
fromyourRabb.Thisisamicroscopicpunishment.
Howabouttheotherhalfoftheayah?
certainly,withthisfirstletterthereisalreadyemphasis.
surelytheywoulddefinitelysay.Ifyouwanttodoubleemphasizethisword,youaddanoon
mushaddah:yaqoolunn.Ifyouwanttotripleemphasizethisword,youaddthela,layaqoolunna:they
willsayagainandagain,overandover:
indeedWe,thiswordis
in(indeed)andnaa(we)fusedtogether:thesepeoplearesodesperate.The
natureofhumansisthatwhentheyarepunishedtheytendtoblameothers,butwhenthepunishmentisso
intense,sosevere,theircognitiveabilitytolieislostandtheyhavenootheroptionbuttotellthetruth.
wehadalwaysbeenwrongdoers.Thepainofthesepeopleismakingthemrememberallofthe
wrongandsinstheycommittedthattheyforgotabout.
BeforetheDayofJudgment,thesepeopleblameothersforthepunishmentBUTifawhiff,abreezefrom
thepunishmentsimplytouchedthem,theywouldcryout.

IntheQuran,theonlyplacewherethestoryofAadamalayhisalaamoccurstwiceconsecutivelybackto
backissuratulIsraa(17)andsuratulKahf(18).ThestoryofAadamalayhisalaamismentionedinother
surahssuchasAraafandBaqarah,buthereinthesetwosurahs,hisstoryismentionedinthemiddleofthe
surahsrightafteroneanother.
Thestoryinbothsurahsbeginssimilarly:

AndwhenWesaidtotheangelsprostratetoAadam,thentheyalldidsowiththeexceptionofIblees
(17:61,18:50)
Whatfollowsintherestoftheayaatdiffer.WhatwefindinsuratulIsraa(whichisalsoknownasSurah
BaniIsraeel)arethewordsofIblees.Ibleessays:
ShallIprostratetotheonewhomYoucreatedfromclay?Thisiswhatisrecordedattheendofthe
ayah,thecomplaintofIblees.WhenweturntosuratulKahf,thereissomethingdifferent.Insteadofthe
statementofIblees,thereishisprofile:
HewasfromtheJinn,thusheviolatedthecommandmentofhisRabb
SuratulIsraabeginswiththementionofBaniIsraeel:

AndWedecreedfortheChildrenofIsraelintheScripture,thatindeedyouwoulddomischiefonthe
earthtwiceandyouwillbecometyrantsandextremelyarrogant!(17:4)
SuratulKahfbeginswiththementionoftheChristians:
AndwarnthosewhosayAllahhastakenason(18:4)
Now,thestoryofAadam,isitknowntobothJewsandChristians?Yes.Thisstorywastoldbothinsurah
17and18.ButtheJewshaveadifferenttheologicalproblem,theirproblemofcomingtoemaanisdifferent
andtheproblemoftheChristiansisdifferent.
TheproblemoftheJewsatthetimeoftheProphetsalAllahualayhiwasallamcanbesummedupinone
word:arrogance.TheywerenotwillingtoacceptanAraboveroneofthem.Thepartofthestorythatis
mentionedinsurah17iswhenIbleessays:whyshouldImakesajdahtohim?,thepartofthelessonthey
areforgetting.IbleesbecameIbleesbecauseofhisarrogance.
TheChristians,ontheotherhand,forthemostpartarehumblepeople.WhentheycametotheProphetsal
AllahualayhiwasallamduringthedelegationofNajran,theywerenotarrogantwithhimbuttheysatwith
himandtalkedwithhim.Whatistheirdeviationinthisstory?TheysaythatIbleeswasnotaJinn,buthe
wasanangel.ThisistrueoftheChristiansingeneraltheytakebasicsofreligionandconfusethem.(ex:
Godis3in1)Theytookthetheologicalcomponentofthisstoryandsaidhewasafallenangel,butAllah
taalaclarifies:hewasfromthejinn,HetoldtheChristianswhattheyneedtohear.Allahtaalaalsoadded
somethingelse:afterthedepartureofEsaalayhisalaamfromthisearth,theycametotheconsensusthat
theyaregoingtoabandonthelawsofMusaalayhisalaam.DidEsaalayhisalaamabandonthelawofMusa
alayhisalaam?No.Theyleftthelaw,andAllahtoldtheChristiansthethingtheyshouldknowaboutIblees
isthatheviolatedthecommandsofhisRabb.WhyisthatimportantforChristians?Theysystematically
violatedthecommandsoftheirRabbbyabandoningthelawofMusaalayhisalaam.
Theayaatbegintheexactsamewaybuttheendingsaredifferenttocorrespondtothepeoplewhoarebeing
addressedineachsurah.
Thesetwosurahsarebeautifullyconnectedinotherways:
Firstly,throughthedhikrofAllah.SuratulIsraabegins:
SubhanAllah.SuratulKahf
begins:
Alhamdulillah.OnebeginswithAllahsPerfectionandonebeginswithAllahsHamd.
InSuratulIsraa,Allahbegins:
GlorifiedandExaltedbeHe,WhotookHisslaveforajourneybynightfromAl
MasjidalHaramtothefarthestmosque,theneighbourhoodwhereofWehaveblessed,inorderthatWe
mightshowhimofOurAyat.Ontheotherhand,insuratulKahf,Allahbegins:
AllpraiseandthanksareonlyfortheOnewhosentdownuponHisslavetheBook.
Insurah17,theslavehasbeentakeninthemiddleofthenightuptoreceiverevelationfromAllah,andin
surah18,thebookhasbeensentdownuponHisslave.Inonetheslavegoesup,andintheother,thebook
comesdown.
BothofthesesurahsmentionMusaalayhisalaam.Onesurahmentionshispubliclifeandtheother
mentionshisprivatelife.TheJewsappreciatedthepubliclifeofMusaalayhisalaam:whenherescued
themfromFirawnismentionedinIsraa.TheChristiansareaprivatepeopletheyappreciatespiritualityso
whichjourneyofMusaismentionedinKahf?TheprivatejourneyofMusaalayhisalaamwithKhidr,a
journeyofknowledge,discoveryandwisdomwhichwasappropriatetowhattheChristiansneededtohear.
Secondly,throughTawheed.HowdowegettoknowAllahtaala?Throughthreeways:byHisNames,
byHiscreationandbyHisrevelation.
ThesecondlastayahofsuratulIsraagivesusthefirstmeanstoknowAllah:

CalluponAllahorcallupontheMostMercifulwhicheverNameyoucall,toHimbelongstheMost
BeautifulNames.(17:110)KnowingAllahtaalabyHisNamesandAttributes.
ThesecondlastayahofsuratulKahfgivesusthesecondandthirdmeanstoknowAllah:

Say:IftheseawereinkfortheWordsofmyLord,surely,theseawouldbeexhaustedbeforetheWordsof
myRabbwouldbefinished,evenifwebrought(anothersea)likeitforitsaid.(18:109)TheMufassiroon
(scholarsofTafseer)commentthattherearetwokindsofWordsofAllah(
):
RevelationaretheWordsofAllah
Hiswordkun(be).Theconsequenceofthewordkunisallofcreation.
Inthefirstsurah,theNamesofAllaharementioned,andinthenextsurah,theothermeanstoknowAllah
taala(Hisrevelationandcreation)arementioned.
Thirdly,throughShirk.WhenyougettoknowAllahtaala,youhaveacquiredtawheed.Theoppositeof
tawheedasweknowisshirk,andtheendingayaatofbothsurahsaredenouncementsofshirk.
Therearedifferentkindsofdenouncingofshirk.Insimpleterms:ifyouelevateanycreationabovewhereit
belongs,thatisshirk,andifyousayanythingaboutAllahthatislowerthanHedeserves,thatisshirk.
EitheryouaretakingthecreationtoohighorbringingtheCreatorlower.
SuratulIsraaends:
Andsay:AllthepraisesandthanksareonlyforAllah,Whohasnottakenason,andWhohasnopartner
in(His)Dominion,nordoesHehaveasupporterinHisGlory.AnddeclareHisGreatnessaboveall
greatness.(17:111)
ToreducethestatusofAllahazzawajal,inHisAttributes,inHisWisdom,isaformofshirk,whichwas
committedbytheJewsandhasbeendenouncedinthisayah.
Ontheotherhand,TheProphetsalAllahualayhiwasallamiscommandedinthelastayahofKahf:
Say:Iamonlyamanlikeyou.IthasbeeninspiredtomethatyourIlahisOneIlah.Sowhoeverhopes
fortheMeetingwithhisRabb,lethimworkrighteousnessandassociatenoneasapartnerintheworship
ofhisRabb.
Thewordusedformanis
bashar,whichliterallymeansonethathasskinthatisexposed.Allahtaala
didnotsayinsaan(man),butratheremphasizedthattheProphetsalAllahualayhiwasallamisjustflesh
andboneslikethem.Theonlydifference:
,revelationhasbeengiventomethat:

thatyourIlaah,theOneworthyofworship,isOne.Bysayingthis,theProphetsalAllahualayhiwasallam
ismakingsurethatnoonetakeshimmorethanabashar,whichistheothershirkofelevatingthecreation
toohigh.
Insurah17,theshirkofreducingthestatusofAllahisdenied,andinsurah18,theshirkofelevating
creationisdenied.
Thesecondlastayaatofbothsurahsareintroductionstotawheed,andthelastayaatofbotharea
denouncingofshirk.
Andfinally:
AttheendofsuratulIsraa,Allahsays:
SayAlhamdulillah.Acommand.
HowdoessuratulKahfbegin?
Alhamdulillah.
SubhanAllah,howbeautifullyconnected!
WhydidbrNoumansharethisgem?Becausewhenwereadtranslation,itseemstousthatthesubjectsand
storiesarejumpingfromonetoanother.ThescholarshavegivenalotofreflectionastowhyourRabbhas
organizedtheMessagethisway,itisnotrandomorchaos,butthereisdivinerevelationinthesequence.
Notonlyisanayahamanifestationofdivinewisdom,thesequenceoftheayaatareamanifestationof
divinewisdomaswellsoitdeservesattentionandreflection.Allahtaalaisteachingushowto
communicateandorganizeourthoughtsbyshowingustheutmostfashioninwhichthoughtsanda
messagemaybeorganized.
MayAllahtaalagiveusadeepappreciationoftheQuran,andaloveofQuranforusandourfamilies.

rememberAllahhowHetaughtyou(2:239).Sothe
ultimatereminderofAllahistheBookofAllah,whichcallsitselftheultimatemeanstoreminder:

AndremindbytheQuran,himwhofearsMyThreat.(50:45)
Whatdoesremindermean?Itisnotnecessarilynewknowledge.Whenyouremindsomeoneof
something,theyalreadyknewaboutit.Soareminderissortofrepetitive,asopposedtoknowledgewhich
canbesomethingnew.
Fromthatpointofview,wecanaddressoneofthemaincriticismsoftheQuraninthewestwhichisthe
Quranrepeatstoomuch.ThefirstresponsetothatisthatthefirstpurposeoftheQuranisnotto
educate,itistoremind.Evenmoreso,thereminderisnotthemaingoalbutthemaingoalisguidance
andthemeanstoguidanceisthereminder.TheQurancallsitselfreminderanditalwayscallsitself
guidance.
Whatisthemeanstoremembrance?Itisthesalaah.Allahtaalaensuredthatwedonotlooseasingleday
withoutgoingbeforeHim,leavingtheworldbehindustostandinfrontofHim,makingsureweallrecite
theultimateremembranceinhopesthatwemaybeguided.Thebiggesttestimonytothisisthatwerecite
ihdinassiraatalmustaqeeminFatihah,andthenwerecitesomethingfromthedhikr.
TherearetwocentraltermsinappreciatingtheQuranforallofusthathavebeenundermined.Whatis
beingoveremphasizedistheknowledgeofQuran,thetafseerofQuran,thesciencesofQuran,the
grammarofQuran,tajweedofQurantheseareallimportant,buttheMOSTimportantofalloftheseis
theGUIDANCEoftheQuranbymeansofthereminderoftheQuran.Thesearethetwokey
components,andifyouaremissingthesetwo,youcanbeamufassiroftheQuran,areciterofQuran,a
tajweedexpertbutthatwillnothelpyouatallbecausethatisnottheprimaryfunctionoftheQuran.
Thewordguidanceinandofitselfisveryclichandweusethetermfairlyloosely.Butletslooktoa
simpledefinitionofguidancetodrivethepointhomedontthinkofitasareligioustermbutasawordly
term.Taketheseexamples:whendoyouaskforguidanceinschool?Whenyoudontknowwhichcareer
tochoseorwhichclassestotake,soyougototheguidancecounselor.Orhowaboutifyourelostonthe
waytotheairport,whatdoyoudo?Youstopandaskforguidance.Guidance,generallyspeaking,iswhen
someonehasagoalinmind,andtheydonotknowhowtoreachthisgoalsotheyaskforhelp.Thismakes
guidanceseemlikeknowledge.IfIknewwhichcoursestotake,Iwouldntneedtoseetheguidance
counselor.IfIknewthedirections,Iwouldntaskforhelp.Sowethinkofguidancealmostthesameaswe
thinkofknowledgeandthesetwoseemtobetiedtogether.
Thisassociationofknowledgeandguidanceworksforeverythingelseinlifebutitdoesnotworkforour
deenandourrelationshipwithAllahazzawajal.
Whynot?Thinkaboutit:
DoyouknowMuslimswhoknowsomethingisharaamyettheystilldoit?
DidAllahspeakaboutpeoplewhohavealotofknowledge,andstillrejectedtheMessenger?
Soknowledgedoesnotnecessarilyleadtoguidance,andknowledgeandguidancearenotthesamething.
Itisverypossiblethatapersoncanhavealotofknowledgeandstillbevoidofguidance.
AllahtaalaspeaksofpeoplewhoareveryknowledgeableintheQuranandthinkaboutit,ifAllahtaala
saystheyhaveknowledgethenthatmeanstheymustofhavealotofknowledge.Yetinthesamepassage
whereAllahtellsusthattheyareknowledgeable,HetellsusthattheyrejectedtheMessengerandthey
changedtheirbooksaftertheyunderstoodthemTheydidnotchangethebookbecausetheydidnot
understand,butAllahsays:
theyaltereditevenaftertheyunderstoodit(2:75).Sotherewasnoknowledge
missing.Wecanseefromthisthatthereisadifferencebetweenknowledgeandguidance.
Sowhatistherelationshipbetweenknowledgeandguidance?KnowledgeisasteppingstoneTO
guidancebutitisnotnecessarilythecasethatwhenyoutakethesteptoknowledge,thatyouare
guaranteedguidance.
Thosewhohaveknowledgeanddidnottakethenextsteptoguidancearegreatercriminalsthantheones
whodidnothaveknowledgeanddidnotseekguidance.Allahtaalacallsthesepeople:
thosewhoreceivedangeruponthem.Afterknowledgetheystilldisobeyedandturnedawayfrom
guidance.
AnincreaseinknowledgeisnotanincreaseinguidanceUNLESSyouwantittobe.
Howdoyoudothis?Themoreyourknowledgeincreases,themoreyourremembranceshould
increase.AndwhenyourememberAllah,begAllahforguidance.
ThenextclarificationisbetweenbeingMuslimandbeingguided.BeingMuslimdoesnotguaranteeone
beingguided.Guidanceisadaytoday,anhourtohour,asalaahtosalaahthingChoiceswemustmake
everyday,whichiswhywehavetokeepaskingAllahforitbecausewedonotknowwhichchoicewewill
takewhenitcomesup.
ThepurposeofthiscourseandlearningArabicistogiveusareasontorememberAllah.Wecanlearn
aboutsometafseerwhichisgreat,butthenumberonethingisthatwewanttodoisempowerour
remembranceofAllah,andtherealremembranceofAllahissalaah.Weshouldupgradefromhaving
anartificialdefinitionofkhushoo,toexperiencingtherealthing.
ThereisaseriousstateofemergencyforourummahwithregardstotheQuran.Thegreatthingaboutthe
SahabaradiAllahuanhumisthattheywereinlovewiththisBook.UmarradiAllahuanhuwouldmake
suretherewasduroos(classes)ofQuranineverycommunity.Wearenowmovingmoreandmorefrom
thisBook.
OurintentionsshouldbetorememberAllahazzawajalbymeansofHisWords.Forexample,ifyou
wanttogainaloveforthesunnah,studytheQuran.YouwillappreciatehowAllahlovesHisMessenger
salAllahualayhiwasallam,andthatwillmakeyoulovethemessengerevenmore.ASahabiorascholar
canwritetheirlovefortheProphetsalAllahualayhiwasallam,butwhenAllahtaalasharesHislovefor
theProphetsalAllahualayhiwasallamthatisjustamazing.
Finally,wesincerelyaskAllahtaalatomakeusamongthosewhomtheProphetsalAllahualayhiwa
sallammentioned:
ThebestofyouarethosewholearntheQuranandteachit.(Bukhari)
WeallsayAmeentogethernow,butwhenyouarealoneinyourhomeordrivingbyyourself,begAllah
taalatomakeyouamongthesepeopleforyoureffortinlearningHisbook.
WhenlearningtheQuranandstudyingit,weshouldnotletshaytaancometousandinciteuswith
whispersofprideorthinkwehavealotofknowledge.Weshouldremainfirmandsteadfastinourcourses
ofstudy,andtakeupthechallengethatAllahtaalaposedinfirstayahhere:
AllahmadetheQuraneasyfordhikr,isthereanyonewhowillputintheeffortto
remember?
AllahtaaladidnotstartbytellingustoremembertheQuran,ratherHestartedbytellingustheQuranis
EASY,sointhatcaseWhoamongstuswillstepforward?
