Materials:

Divide and Ride by Stuart J. Murphy

Manipulative cubes
Math Workbook
Construction Paper
Petals
Flower Stems

Objectives:

We will learn how to divide into groups

We will do this by solving the division problems in the book Divide and Ride
I will know I have it when I can solve and construct a division flower.

Directions:
1. Students will gather on the oval carpet to learn about division
2. I will explain what division is, how to write the equation and how to divide
objects into groups

(I will only be using the draw a picture and

definition part of this anchor chart.)
3. Next I will read a book called Divide and Ride by Stuart J. Murphy
a. As we are reading the book the students will be working with the cubes
to help solve the division problems in the book.
b. The math problems are:

i. We need to group our 12 friends into 6 groups. How many

friends in each group? (12/6=2)
ii. We need to group our 12 friends into 4 groups. How many
friends in each group? (12/4=3)
iii. We need to group our 12 friends into 3 groups. How many
friends in each group? (12/3=4)
c. More math problems if there is time:
i. We need to group our 18 friends into 6 groups. How many
friends in each group? (18/6=3)
ii. We need to group our 24 friends into 4 groups. How many
friends in each group? (24/4=6)
iii. We need to group our 30 friends into 6 groups. How many
friends in each group? (30/6=5)
iv. We need to group our 21 friends into 3 groups. How many
friends in each group? (21/3=7)
v. We need to group our 40 friends into 5 groups. How many
friends in each group? (40/5=8)
4. Activity
a. The students will be constructing a flower and pedals based on a story
problem
b. The story problem will be:
i. If you have _______ (6, 12 or18) petals on ________ (2 or3)
flowers, how many petals does each flower have?
c. The students will be given the option of 6, 12 or 18 petals and 2 or 3
flowers.
d. The students will show what the equation will look like on the front of
the construction paper, and then under their equation they will
construct their flowers.
