Site description
The entire Big River valley is covered by some of the finest eucalypt forests in Australia. The headwaters of the
Big River support magnificent stands of Mountain and Alpine Ash with lush undergrowth. Most of the forest is
regrowth following the major wildfires in 1926 and 1939. Cattle were grazed in the forest through to the 1960s.
The Big River Road runs 25k down the valley, descending from about 600m to 420m at 25 Mile Creek. The
vegetation becomes a little drier, the terrain rougher and the road gradually deteriorates eventually to a 4-
wheel track after 25 Mile Creek.
There are 19 recognised campsites, 2 of them with facilities. Most sites are small, semi-cleared river flats.
Alluvial gold mining attracted many prospectors after the 1850s. Deep lead mining was carried out near
Stockmans Reward. A large dredge operated there in the 1920s.The Yarra Track, the original access route to
the Woods Point goldfields, crossed the Big River at Stockmans Crossing (later renamed Stockmans Reward
after gold was found there).
