BALANCE
EXCELLENCE

olorado State University is well-

growing and most vibrant areas in the country.

The core of any great university is, of course,

academic success. Colorado State faculty
produced seven consecutive years of more than
$300 million in research expenditures placing
us among the best public research universities
nationally and at the very top among universities
without a medical school. In fact, the most recent
National Science Foundation higher education
survey ranked us among the top 10 percent in
the country in research quality and productivity.
Our faculty is, by all objective measures, highly
productive and among the most competitive
anywhere. Nearly 80 percent of our graduates are
in jobs or in graduate school within six months of
graduation, and more than 9 out of 10 Rams would
select CSU again, demonstrating the quality of the
campus and learning environments.

As an institution, in the face of one of the worst

economies in modern history, Colorado State has
thrived demonstrating our ability to turn adversity
to advantage and succeed while remaining true
to our mission and values. Our commitment
to excellence has driven nearly $1 billion in
infrastructure improvements on our campus over
the past decade. And with the recently approved
41,200 capacity on-campus stadium, Colorado
State has in process, or already built, more than
a quarter of a billion dollars in athletic facilities
upgrades in just the past few years. This is an
institution on the move, on the rise, and headed to
even greater success in the years ahead.

As the Denver Post wrote in a banner headline

Dec. 11th, Rams own the state. Colorado State
has built a powerful position in one of the nations
most-attractive and fastest-growing regions, the
Denver metropolitan area. This metro area, which
includes Fort Collins, has 1.6 million TV households,
according to Nielsen, ranking it 17th nationally, and
the Denver Post ranks in the top 10 newspapers
nationally for Sunday circulation. This thriving metro
area includes 3 million people, $158 billion in gross
domestic product from 115,000-plus businesses,
and 1.5 million workers. In Denver alone, Colorado
State has nearly 50,000 living alumni, and that
figure jumps to more than 85,000 living alums in
the entire metro area along the Front Range.

Our football team has emerged as a national

success story. The Rams this fall attracted
multiple home sellouts in support of a
breakthrough 10-win season. Quarterback
Garrett Grayson was named a Heisman Trophy
aspirant after breaking nearly every school
record for passing and total offense, and wide
receiver Rashard Higgins (a sophomore) was
a national finalist for the Fred Biletnikoff Award
after leading the nation in receiving yards and
touchdowns. Higgins was the only consensus
first-team All-American from a non-Power 5
conference. We have produced 14 NFL draft
picks since 2000 and expect to have several
more in 2014. We qualified for our 12th bowl
game in 21 years while producing numerous
All-Americans and Academic All-Americans. We
stand for consistent and sustained excellence.
Our volleyball program, under the direction of
Tom Hilbert, is the very definition of success,
recently qualifying for the NCAA Tournament for
the 20th consecutive year, spending most of the
year ranked in the top 10 and advancing to the
Regional Semifinals for the ninth time. In addition,
Colorado State annually ranks among the
national leaders in attendance and recently sold
more than 11,000 tickets for the NCAA first- and
second-round matches, ranking second among 16
national sites in attendance. Hilbert has won 462
matches at CSU more wins than any coach in
any sport at a Division I school in Colorado.
Our mens basketball program has made four
postseason appearances in five years, including
two of the past three NCAA Tournaments and
recently cracked the Top 25 rankings again.
Attendance has risen dramatically under the
guidance of third-year coach Larry Eustachy,
with the Rams attracting multiple sellouts at
Moby Arena. In 2012-13 the Rams set a program
record with 26 victories, cracked the Top 25
and advanced to the second round of the NCAA
Tournament. The current team started the
season with a school-record 13 consecutive wins
and was included in the Top 25 for the second
time in three seasons, becoming the fourth
ranked CSU sports program in 2014-15.
Our womens basketball team won the Mountain
West regular-season title in 2014. A record
six players earned all-conference honors. The

program has been a consistent postseason

participant and has made numerous appearances
in the national polls, rising to as high as No. 3.
Our mens cross-country team made its
second consecutive appearance in the NCAA
Championships and finished the year ranked #19.
Our track team produced two All-Americans
hurdler Trevor Brown and thrower Kiah Hicks
at the NCAA Outdoor Championships, while
Brown, Hicks and heptathlete Justin Green were
indoor All-Americans.
A school-record 74 student-athletes were
named Scholar-Athletes by the Mountain
West in 2013-14. Cross-country runner Christian
Meyer was named the Mountain West Scholar
Athlete of the Year, becoming the first CSU
male to win the award and accompanying postgraduate scholarship. Mens golfer Cameron
Harrell was named a Cleveland Golf/Srixon
All-America Scholar for 2013-14.
Alumni Becky Hammon and Amy Van DykenRouen made national headlines. Hammon
retired from the WNBA as one of the top players
in league history, and was immediately hired
as an assistant coach by the world-champion
San Antonio Spurs. Hammon is the first female
full-time assistant coach in the history of North
Americas four major sports. Also, Hammon
was named Sportswoman of the Year by
ESPN. Van Dyken-Rouen, a six-time Olympic
gold medalist, was paralyzed in an accident
this summer but her remarkable recovery and
determination to walk again prompted CSU to
name one of its campus streets Amy Van Dyken
Way in her honor. She is the only former student
to have a campus street named for her.
CSU has always been a standard-bearer for
excellence with integrity. We are one of fewer
than 20 Division I institutions without a major
NCAA infraction in our history.
CSU had two programs post perfect APR scores
in the latest NCAA report, and all programs rank
among the best in the Mountain West.
We have committed to providing all allowable
amenities for student-athletes that are part
of recently passed NCAA legislation. In other
words, we are committed to playing by the
same rules instituted by Power 5 conferences.

ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE
Weve seen seven consecutive years of
record enrollment, while strengthening
our commitment to diversity and to firstgeneration students 25 percent of our
students, one-in-four, are the first in their
families to go to college. Our land-grant
heritage and commitment to access are still
defining characteristics of our university.

Our first-year retention rate is now right at 87

percent including the single largest one-year
retention rate increase in CSUs history last
year. The quality of our faculty and learning
environment is at the core of this success, and
weve invested in this even as weve seen tighter
budgets bucking the national trend and getting
better even in the face of real challenges. Some
examples include:
In the past five years, weve
seen 30 percent increases in
academic and student support
expenditures, coupled with flat
spending on administration. We
focus on the right things.
CSU has added six new
academic departments or
special academic units, three
new graduate degrees, 12 new
undergraduate majors, and 17
new undergraduate minors. Our
curriculum has retained its focus
but has never been broader
to give our students what they
need to succeed in a global
marketplace.
Total faculty numbers have
grown 13 percent in five years
to keep pace with record
enrollment. Weve also had a
13 percent increase in women
tenure-track faculty and a 17
percent increase in minority
tenure-track faculty during this
period. We strive every day
to reflect the society we were
created to serve.

More than 5,000 Colorado State students take

part in undergraduate research opportunities
every year and the number of students
involved in education abroad has increased 70
percent in the past five years alone.
Weve maintained our commitment to student
success demonstration of our belief that a
truly great university fosters and builds success
among its students, not just access. Our fouryear graduation rate has gone up 14 percent
over the past five years, putting us well on
the path to attaining our stretch goal of an 80
percent, six-year graduation rate.

Weve directed our resources to our

students, and have seen a 158 percent
increase in institutional need-based
financial aid and an 80 percent increase in
privately funded scholarships. Total annual
financial aid at the institution has increased
$27 million over five years.
All of this success has contributed to a 147 percent
increase in private giving to our University over
the past five years, with a record high $143.3
million raised in FY14 alone and unprecedented
levels of alumni engagement. We have built an
effective fundraising organization that, in turn, is
building a successful philanthropic culture.

Given all the discussion out there about conference changes, I wanted to share some of the analysis we've been doing
on how CSU stacks up. Some interesting stuff in here that could be worth sharing with some of your folks who have
asked about this. For fun yesterday we also checked out how we stack up against some specific institutions (below). Our
fund raising and alumni engagement numbers really stand out.
