Task 2
You are going to read an article about children and chimpanzees. Some phrases have
been removed from the text. Choose the right phrases from the list (A-I) to fill the gaps
(9-16). There is one extra phrase that you do not need. Write your answers in the boxes
below. There is an example (0) at the beginning.

Babies Versus Chimps: Whos Smarter?

By Michael D. Lemonick
Chimps are smart, but humans are a lot smarter.
Until now, there have been two competing
ideas to explain why. The general-intelligence
theory says that our brains are bigger and more
complex. The cultural-intelligence hypothesis
says that humans have specific areas of
intelligence where we excel; our brains are not
just bigger, 0. __________________. A new
study, published Thursday in Science, makes a
strong case that the second theory is the right
one. A team of anthropologists developed a learning test and 9. _________________,
105 children and 32 orang-utans, to compare the groups directly.
The three groups performed about equally well on physical learning finding hidden
objects, 10. ______________, using a stick to get something thats out of reach. And
indeed, the kids were of an age 2 1/2 years old where its widely known that they do
perform about as well as chimps in such tests. So for example, the scientists would hide a
treat of some kind a toy, or some food behind a box, while the test subjects looked on.
The kids, chimps and orangs would know 11. ______________ it stopped existing, and
had to understand where it had gone. All three groups did equally well at this sort of thing.
But when it came to social learning tasks such as understanding how to solve a
problem 12. ____________________, the kids 13. _________________. In one test,
for example, researchers showed both groups 14. ______________ to get a treat. The
children learned by watching, and opened it as the adults did. The apes tended to just chew
the tube open.
If the kids had been better than the apes at both types of task, 15. _____________ the just
generally smarter theory. The fact that the children excelled in specific areas suggests its
the other theory thats right that our 16. _________________ has allowed us to build
complex societies, cooperate and learn from each other, and use writing, numbers and
images to communicate ideas.

Task 3
Read this article about teenage drug use and then read the statements below the text
and decide if they correspond to what the article says. If what the statement says is true,
mark it A. If what the statement says is false, mark it B. If a statement says something
that is not mentioned in the article, mark it C. Write the letters in the boxes as shown in
the example.

Teenage Drug Use and Overindulgent Parents

There is a growing and dangerous trend in
the United States its called overindulgence.
Experts warn that parents are spoiling their
kids; not just with gadgets and toys, but by
failing to set limits, not requiring that chores
be done on a regular basis, not making the
child wait or earn money for items they want.
According to experts, this type of parenting
can lead to substance use and abuse.
Parents think that they overindulge their pre-teens and teens out of kindness, but in reality
they are training kids to be irresponsible and helpless. The truth is that overindulging your
children can undermine their competence and confidence.
