The Health Maintenance Organization

It was in the 1980s when the Health Maintenance Organization (HMO) system,
the biggest kind of Managed care Organization (MCO) in the Philippines, was
introduces in the Philippines (Reas, M.R.A. P., 2012). There are currently 14 HMOs that
are members of Association of Health Maintenance Organization of the Philippines, Inc.
(AHMOPI), which are: Blue Cross Health Care, Inc.; Caritas Health Shield, Inc.;
Cocolife Health Care; Fortune Medicare, Inc.; Intellicare; Maxicare Healthcare Corp.;
Medicard Philippines, Inc.; Medocare Health Systems, Inc.; Health Maintenance, Inc.;
Health Plan Philippines, Inc.; Insular Health Care, Inc.; Philhealth Care, Inc.; Star Health
Care System, Inc.; and Value Care Health Systems, Inc. (AHMOPI, n.d.)
In the last decade, the HMO industry already gained its popularity among those
who seek protection for their individual medical needs. This was due to the present
generations lifestyle, people have been seeing the need to allocate or set aside money for
their health. Nowadays, it is very important to be healthy at all times because getting an
illness is turning into a superfluity more than anything else.
Pursuant to this provision, the establishment of the Health Maintenance
Organization (HMOs) in the Philippines in order to promote participation of the private
sector in catering the needs of the Filipinos in terms of health care services.
