Recording Critique

Originally from Poland, Alexandra Kurzak started their musical education at the
age of seven and by the age of twenty one she made her first professional opera debut
as Susanna in Le Nozze di Figaro. Her mother was her greatest influence in music and
this was because her mother also performed in opera and she was Alexandras only
teacher.
Gioia!, Alexandras first CD debut is a wonderful mix of energy and multiple high
notes. What makes Alexandras voice special are her timbre and how her voice is a
beautiful conglomeration of sparkly high notes and darker lower notes. Her Eastern
European tint to her voice gives a nice balance to her precise but free high notes. Her
accuracy of pitch and rhythm throughout the album also gives her much credibility
because her skill really shows through. The debut really captures her voice by
contrasting lyric and coloratura arias and it is heavily focused on roles where she has
performed on stage. My favorite Aria on the album is Sempre Libera. The song itself is
a stunning and Alexandra brings it into a new life with her effortless agility and warm
intensity. Alexandras ability to really understand the text and her ability to act with her
voice without losing her sense of fluidity and sparkle calls for much praise because this
is a hard feat to conquer.
Overall Alexandra Kurzak seems well beyond her years in the opera scene.
Though she is new she possess great skill not only technically but also artistically.
Gioia! was a wonderful debut for Alexandra because it really showed her proficiency
and versatility in singing.
