It is hard to believe summer has ended so quickly, the
children are back to school and the snowbirds have flown
north. Many, like me, are looking forward to the rainy
season. It will be a welcome relief for the flora, fauna and
habitants of Panama.
The Panama Riviera remains a popular destination for Panamanians and the world. The area is consistently growing as
word gets out about the beauty, amenities, opportunities and
lifestyle of this region of Panama. The tourists who come
for a beach or highland experience get exactly what they
want and continue to return for annual vacations. Often
times they relocate permanently.
The development is evidenced by the continuation of new
construction, both residential and commercial structures, as
well as, restaurants and multiple businesses. New shopping
malls have opened in the Coronado and Playa Blanca areas
and others are in progress.
As the area expands information continues to be obtained
mostly by word of mouth. This is how LORE got its name.
LORE is a derivative of folklore. The definition of folklore
is to pass by word of mouth through the generations the
customs, traditional beliefs and stories of a community. The
goal of LORE is to provide information easily accessible
through print and digital media.
LORE Magazine is intended to be a resource guide for the
Panama Riviera connecting the local, national and international audience with businesses, events and opportunities in
the beach and highland communities. Designed to deliver
enthusiastic, creative and complete coverage of the area
answering the questions you may have. Be adventurous, try

La Riviera de Panam contina como un destino popular

proveer informacin fcilmente accesible a travs de algo
impreso o digitalmente.
La Revista LORE proyecta ser una gua para la Riviera de
Panam enlazando la audiencia local, nacional e internacional con los negocios, eventos y oportunidades que la

anama, whose indigenous name translates to

abundance of fish according to the most popular folklore version has an island feel. Mostly due
to the tropical weather and the 2490 km (1547miles) of beach. The Panama Riviera enjoys 80 km
of seashore. Panama is ranked 50th in the world
for the length of coastline, according to world.bymap.org. There are over 1,000 islands off the
Pacific Coast. The sun rises over the Pacific
Ocean in the Panama Riviera. Although there
may be intense thunderstorms during rainy
season, Panama is outside the hurricane belt. All
of this is excellent news for beach lovers and
water sports and fishing enthusiasts.
Panamas beaches (playas) are public and private.
Public, because the beaches are open to everyone. Private, because there is no single road that
you can drive along the coastline of the Panama
Riviera like found in other countries. In order to
visit any of the beaches you must enter off the
Pan-American Highway to each area. Panama
has many gorgeous beaches to choose from, be
adventurous and explore them all!

Beach
Overview

Punta Chame has white-sand beaches that

stretch for 22 miles. Great for kite boarding and
other extreme water sports with a magnificent
mountain background.
Playa Malibu is a white sand beach along the
coast with good surfing at the river mouth.
Playa Gorgona is a long narrow black and white
beach great for walking and swimming.
Playa Serena has a curved bay offering swimming,
walking, surfing, and other water sports. This spot is one of
the best and most consistent surfing spots in the Panama
Bay.
Playa Coronado once inside the gates, has a black and
white sand beach with good swimming, walking and sun
bathing.

El Palmar is in a quaint community on the beach with a

relaxed surfer vibe. Good surfing for beginners and more
advanced. It also has surf schools and a beautiful setting for
flying kites and relaxing in the sun.
Rio Mar has nice sea cliffs and caves offering shade from
the sun and good surfing.

Playa Teta is one of the most popular surfing beaches near

the city. Beach access is slightly difficult to reach, it is down
a dirt road with no signs.

Santa Clara has private communities spread along one of

the most attractive beaches on the Pacific coast with a long
white sand beach and clear water.

Punta Barco is an affluent beachfront community with sea

cliffs bordering the waters edge.

Playa Blanca is a tranquil spot to swim, sunbathe and enjoy

ocean sports.

Coronado Area
C

oronado is a coastal city and resort area located

just over an hour west of Panama City. It has been a
popular weekend destination for Panamanians for
decades. Folklore has it, Roberto Eisenmann, Sr.
purchased the land in the early 1940s and named it
after the famous hotel on Coronado Island in San
Diego California.
Native tribes once fished the waters off the coast of
Coronado and hunted the savannas inland of this
beach town long before the Spanish arrived in the
sixteenth century. After the arrival of the Spanish,
most of the native population succumbed to new
diseases or were enslaved and killed off by the colonizers.
The Spanish eventually set up large estates around
Coronado (originally known as Los Llanos del Chiru)
to farm produce and raise livestock for Panama City
and other settlements. In addition, locals survived by
fishing the rich waters of the coast and still continue
the vocation today.
The exclusive beach community was Panamas first
resort development and in recent years has grown at
a rapid pace. New shopping malls with restaurants,
banks, medical and veterinary clinics, hardware and
garden centers and more, are appearing in the area
almost overnight.
Inside the gated community of Coronado you will
find single family homes, high rises, casitas, hotels,
restaurants, religious facilities, as well as, opportunities for golf, tennis, exercising, surfing, and other
beach activities.
Coronado has grown into a great community that has
retained a small town feel.

Ceviche is a delicious and popular seafood dish
found in the coastal regions of Latin America.
The dish is made from raw fish and marinated
in a citrus-based mixture (most commonly
lemon and lime) and seasoned with things such
as chopped onions, salt, celery and cilantro,
assorted peppers, corn, and fruit. Every country
has their own variations of preparing and
serving ceviche. In Panama, Ceviche de Corvina is popular and often served as an appetizer in
local restaurants. It is also commonly prepared
with shrimp, squid and octopus, and served
with little pastry shells called "canastitas."
The origin of ceviche is not precisely known.
Some historians believe a similar dish could
have been brought to Peru by Moorish women
from Granada who accompanied the Spanish

INGREDIENTS
2 (1 1/2 pound) lobsters, cooked, chilled, and shelled
1 red onion, julienned
2 tomatoes, concassed and julienned
2 scallions, sliced
2 oranges, segmented
2 cups mango nectar (you can puree some mango if you
cannot find nectar)
2 tablespoons lime juice
2 passion fruits, juiced
A bunch chopped cilantro
Salt and pepper
1 mango, peeled, seeded, and thinly sliced
2 grapefruits, segmented

DIRECTIONS
Dice the lobsters into pieces and place in a large mixing bowl. Add the onion, tomatoes, scallions, and orange
segments. In a separate bowl, combine the mango nectar, lime juice, and the passion fruit juice. Add the juice mixture to the lobster mixture and season with cilantro, salt, and pepper, to taste. Arrange sliced mango and grapefruit
segments on a plate and top with ceviche.
You can substitute your lobster with a good white fish such as Corvina, Grouper, Snapper, Shrimp and even Bay
Scallops, or even a mixture of all of those choices. Feel free to experiment and enjoy making your own variations of
the dish. Add different fruit and juices. Be creative !!!

Nueva Gorgona, Chame,

raveling west from Panama City the first community you encounter at the start of the Panama
Riviera is Bejuco. A roadside village with a charming town square. The turn to Sora and Altos del
Maria is located here. There are several different
versions of the origin of how Bejuco got its name.
The most popular folklore proclaims that when the
first settlers from Chameros arrived they discovered the region covered in bejucos (a type of vine)
which were used like ropes to transport goods to
Panama City.
Just prior to arriving in Bejuco is a left turn off the
Panamerican Highway. This will take you to Punta
Chame, a fishing community on a 300-meter-wide
peninsula with stretches of white-sand beaches. It
has private homes and hotels and has become known
for its extreme sports themed facility.
Chame is a growing community located west of
Bejuco. It has an active, private airport. This airfield
was once an auxiliary military installation of
Howard Air Force Base and used during World War
II as part of the defense of the Panama Canal.
Nueva Gorgona, commonly referred to as Gorgona
is a small town situated 80km west of Panama City.
The original town of Gorgona is located under what
is now Gatun Lake. The town was flooded when
Gatun Lake was created during the construction of
the Panama Canal. It was rebuilt in the form of
Nueva Gorgona now located in the Panama Riviera.
Gorgona is a large fishing community with a beachfront mix of white and volcanic sand. It is a popular spot for locals on weekends and holidays. The
water is mostly calm but is known to have a strong
undertow in some areas. During the week you can
usually have the beach almost all to yourself. The
area has drawn the attention of many developers and
is expanding residentially and commercially. Gorgona has a laid back small town atmosphere with
essentially all the amenities needed for everyday
life.

principal, posee una bella plaza de pueblo. La desviacin
para ir a Sora y Altos del Mara se encuentra aqu. Existen
diferentes versiones del origen del nombre. El ms popular
indica que los primeros Chameros en llegar observaronque la regin estaba cubierta de bejucos (Un tipo de enredadera). Estas eran usadas como sogas para el transporte de

Justo antes de Bejuco a mano izquierda de la carretera
Panamericana existe una ruta que te llevar a Punta
Chame, es una comunidad pesquera en una pennsula 300
metros de ancho con tramos de playas de arena blanca.
Tiene casas privadas y hoteles, se ha vuelto conocida por el
nico complejo turstico con temtica en deportes extremos.
Chame es una comunidad en crecimiento localizada al oeste
de Bejuco. Tiene un activo y privado aeropuerto. Este terreno de vuelos fue parte del campo de aviacin militar auxiliar de Howard Air Force y fue utilizado durante la segunda

Panam.

t is hard to miss these rolling works of art and colorful icons as they race in and out of traffic
rushing to the next bus stop to unload and receive passengers. These distinctive buses known
as Diablos Rojos - Red Devils in English draw the attention of bystanders everywhere. The
name is the slang expression for loud buses in Panama City. It refers to the buses historical red
color and to the irresponsible driving of the bus operators.
They have been the primary means of public transportation in Panama for more than four decades. In a previous life they were school buses and have been shipped mostly from the United
States. Now they are privately owned city buses used mainly by the locals for around $0.25 per
ride. Diablos Rojos are a reflection of Panamanian culture. Each exhibits a distinctive and
custom paint job. Each operator has to compete for riders so they put a huge amount of effort
into decorating their buses to attract more attention. Some owners hire artists to create colorful
portraits or murals while others paint their own designs. The artwork can be of popular artists,
religious symbols, political portraits or brassy slogans. Some have bubble skylights, party
lights, and polished tailpipes and rims. Each bus is unique! Operators often attract their riders
with horn honking and blasting sounds of salsa, reggae and other bass-heavy music.
Diablos Rojos will eventually become extinct. Panama is growing at a rapid pace and this
culturally recognizable trademark is diminishing. The Panamanian government is in the
process of interchanging them with a modern bus fleet. The replacement will be a multi-year
process. So, if you are an adventure seeker and want to experience a ride in one of the notorious Diablos Rojos, time is running out.

l Valle de Antn, generally referred to as El Valle is

located in the Province of Cocle and nestled in an inactive
volcano 124 km from Panama City. At an elevation of
600m it is much cooler than the lowland areas with a mild
springtime climate. The daytime year round temperature
averages around 28 degrees Celsius. The El Valle de
Anton caldera is one of the largest inhabited volcanos in
the world having a radius of 6km and home to over 7600
inhabitants. El Valle has been home to the Guaym Indian
tribe for hundreds of years
This picturesque village offers many natural attractions
for its inhabitants and visitors, the beautiful Chorro, El
Macho and Las Mozas waterfalls, gorgeous flora,
sanctuaries, zoos, zip-lining and thermal mineral pools to
name a few.
Excursions include hikes up the legendary mountain of
La India Dormida (The Sleeping Maiden Indian) or the
Cloud Forest Reserve of the Cerro Gaital Natural Monument. Serious birdwatchers will be thrilled as El Valle is
one of the best places in Panama for watching tropical
birds. The rich volcanic soil is responsible for the natural
beauty of the lush flowers and plant life.
The center of town has an exotic market showcasing the
local handicrafts of paintings, carvings of wood, woven
baskets, hats and molas perfect for decorations or souvenirs. The fresh fruits, vegetables, flowers, orchids and
ornamental plants are known throughout the area.

l Cerro Negro has an altitude of 1,054 meters and is

located in Capira within the town of Cacao in the mountain
range of Llorn. It is one of the most visited places in Panama
for mountaineering. This hill does not have the altitude of the
Volcn Bar. However, it presents optimal complexity for the
hiking lover. Only a two hour drive from Panama City the
steep slopes prove to be a challenge and workout for even the
most experienced climber.
El Cerro Negro is home to a great variety of important species.
Howler Monkeys, eques, Lowland Pacas, and Jaguars.
There are other kind of species that for obvious reasons are not
mentioned in order to keep them safe. There is an extended
variety of birds that use the area as a flyway. In the green
forest coverts top you can find different species of trees like
Caobas, Espave and others. It is also home to an immense
quantity of plants. El Cerro Negro is part of the
watershed of the Panama Canal.

Many important rivers begin in this area and lead to Gatun

Lake, therefore it is important we maintain the forests.
It is very easy to get to the area of the Cerro Negro. You can
take your 4x4 vehicle to the foot of the hill in the community
of Pea Blanca of Cacao. The excursion is easily accessible
by bus from La Chorrera to the community of Ciri Grande.
Once there, the hike is less than three hours to the top of the
hill. There you can admire the beautiful panorama of the
valley from the Rio Indio, it begins in the hill of Gaital and
flows to the Atlantic Ocean.
It is important to take into consideration the physical and
psychologic preparation for an activity such as this. When
ascending the Cerro Negro it is also essential to consider the
weather. In rainy season, the weather can change quickly
because of the geographic location. It can also rain almost all
year. You will need good equipment including suitable boots
with traction that can protect your ankles and assist with the
incline. If you spend the night be prepared. The temperature
can drop and get cold. Consider taking a good local guide who
knows the trails. The routes are not permanent and during
rainy season they can be difficult to find.
Cerro Negro is a beautiful place worthy to be known by
adventure lovers. The hike can be completed in a day. The
ascendancy from the foot takes just 2 hours, but let me tell
you, these two hours are pure adrenaline!

l Cerro Negro tiene una altitud de 1,054 metros, est

ubicado en Capira, en el corregimiento del Cacao. Es uno
de los lugares ms visitados en Panam para practicar
montaismo. El cerro puede no tener la altitud del Volcn
Bar, sin embargo presenta una ptima complejidad para
los amantes del senderismo. Se encuentra a slo dos horas
conduciendo automvil desde la Ciudad de Panam. Sus
pronunciadas pendientes prometen ser un reto extenuante
incluso para los trepadores ms experimentados.
El Cerro Negro es hogar de gran variedad de especies
importantes. Monos Aulladores, eques, Conejos Pintados
y Jaguares. Existen muchas ms especies pero por obvias
razones no son mencionadas para as mantenerlas seguras.
Encontrars una extensa variedad de aves que usan el rea
como zonas migratorias. La cima es cubierta por un verde y
frondoso bosque, en dicha cima hallars gran cantidad de
rboles como por ejemplo Caoba y Espav. Adems el
cerro es hogar de una inmensa cantidad de plantas y es
parte de la Cuenca hidrogrfica del Canal de Panam.
Muchos de los ros importantes comienzan en esta rea y
desembocan en el Lago Gatn, debido a esto es importante
la conservacin de nuestros bosques.
El Cerro Negro es fcilmente accesible, por medio de un
vehculo 4x4 hasta alcanzar la base del cerro en la comuni-

dad de Pea Blanca de Cacao. La excursin es fcilmente

accesible con Bus desde La Chorrera el cual te transportar
hasta la comunidad de Cir Grande, de all debes caminar
menos de tres horas hasta la cima del cerro, una vez all
usted podr admirar un paisaje hermoso del valle del Ro
Indio, el cual nace en el cerro Gaital y hace su recorrido
hacia la vertiente del Ocano Atlntico.
Es importante tomar en cuenta la preparacin fsica y
psicolgica para una actividad de esta naturaleza. Cuando
asciendas al Cerro Negro es importante considerar el clima.
En poca lluviosa suele cambiar muy rpido, debido a su
ubicacin geogrfica. Puede llegar a llover casi todo el ao.
Necesitars contar con buen equipamiento incluyendo
botas con traccin que puedan proteger tus tobillos, debido
a la inclinacin del terreno. Si pasas la noche al aire libre
debes estar preparado, la temperatura baja bastante. Siempre debes considerar un buen gua el cual conozca las
rutas. En poca lluviosa los caminos suelen cambiar razn
que hace ms difcil seguirlos.
El Cerro Negro es un hermoso lugar merecedor de ser conocido por los amantes de las aventuras. Escalarlo puede
tomar un da y ascender desde la base toma slo 2 horas
Pero djenme comentarles, son dos horas de pura adrenalina!

an Carlos is located on the Pacific coast about 100

km drive west of Panama City, just a couple of minutes
past Coronado. It is a quaint village with a medical
facility, markets, fishermen, restaurants, and is a
growing community of single family homes and condominiums.

What is that?

he markets in Panama are full of things unfamiliar to many North Americans and
Europeans. It is a wonderful place to find, experience, and taste a large variety of fruits
and vegetables, many of which are only found in tropical regions such as here in
Panama. You often hear exclamations like What is that? Some look downright scary
and most people dont even want to venture to try. However, once you get your sight set
on one of those unfamiliar objects and exercise your imagination and adventurous spirit
youd be surprised at how delicious these weird products can taste.
Lets start with a couple of examples.

Mamey or Sapote is sometimes referred to as Mammee apple. The fruit can either be
consumed raw or made into smoothies, milkshakes, ice cream, fruit bars, jelly and
marmalade. Some consider the fruit an aphrodisiac. It is packed with vitamin C. The
flavor is a combination of pumpkin and sweet potato with hints of chocolate, almond,
vanilla and honey. The fruit has a large center pit, similar to an avocado. Oil extracted
from the seed of the fruit is used in some beauty products and is known as Sapayul Oil.
Mangos are known by almost everyone, but you have to experience mangos in Panama
to get a true appreciation of this wonderful fruit. The season goes for many months
starting in March and runs all the way through July-August. This fruit is so abundant
here with mango trees everywhere. Driving down the highway or most streets in any
town or village and you will see lots of ripe, fallen fruit ready for the taking. We always
say I brake for mangos. It is considered, The King of Fruits because of its versatile
uses and nutritional benefits.
Otoe is also known as Taro. It is pink inside and used as a root vegetable like the potato
or yucca. Its inexpensive and makes a great alternative to mashed potatoes or you can
slice it, dice it and fry. Dont forget to peel it first.
Inga Beans or sometimes referred to as ice cream beans because of the sweet flavor and
smooth texture. In Panama it is known as guaba. It is seasonal here but widely grown.
Inga pods have long been a favorite snack for many people in Central and South America, although the tree is still undervalued outside these regions. It is extremely sweet and
a fun food to nibble on. Much like other super fruits is has numerous health benefits.

son irreconocibles. Panam es un lugar maravilloso para encontrar, experimentar y probar una gran variedad de frutas y
vegetales, muchas de estas especies son slo encontradas en regiones tropicales como aqu, en Panam. Escuchars enocasiones gente exclamando Qu es eso? algunas de estas especies se ven francamente aterradoras y la mayora de las
personas ni siquiera pretenden aventurarse a saborearlas. Sin embargo, una vez que tengas la mirada fija en uno de estos
objetos desconocidos, te prepares mentalmente y estimules tu espritu aventurero seguramente te sorprenders del delicioso
sabor que obtendrs probndolos.
Empecemos con unos cuantos ejemplos.
Mamey o Sapote conocida en ingls como Mammee Apple. Es una fruta que puede ser consumida cruda o preparada en batidos, malteadas, helados, barras de frutas, jaleas y mermeladas. Algunos consideran esta fruta como un afrodisiaco. Es rica en vitamina C y su sabor es una combinacin
de calabaza, camote con toques de chocolate, almendra, vainilla y miel. La fruta tiene un
enorme agujero en el centro, similar al del aguacate. El aceite extrado de la semilla es
utilizado en algunos productos de belleza y es conocido como Aceite de Zapallo.
El Mango es conocido por casi todo el mundo, pero es necesario experimentar los
mangos de Panam para apreciar su verdadera exquisitez. La temporada de mangos
dura varios meses, comenzando de Marzo hasta llegar a Julio-Agosto. En el pas existe
una enorme cantidad de rboles de esta fruta por lo que aqu los mangos son muy abundantes. Cuando conduzcas por las vas principales y calles de la mayora de pueblos
podrs ver muchos mangos maduros en el suelo listos para ser comidos. Siempre
decimos Frenar por los mangos. Adems se le considera El Rey de las Frutas
por su versatilidad de uso y beneficios nutricionales que aporta.
Otoe conocido tambin como Taro. Es un tubrculo de color rosa en el interior que puede
ser usado como las papas y yucas. Es barato y es una fantstica alternativa para sustituir elpur de papas o; puedes crtalos en rebanadas, en cuadritos y frerlos. No olvides pelarlo
primero.
Inga Beans o Guaba llamados algunas veces frijoles de helado por su dulce sabor y suave textura.
Es ampliamente cultivada aqu. Las guabas han sido uno de los bocadillos favoritos de muchas
personas en Centro Amrica y Amrica del Sur, sin embargo el rbol es infravalorada fuera de estas
regiones. Son extremadamente dulces y es divertida como una comida de picar. Al igual que otras sper
frutas tiene una gran cantidad de beneficios para la salud.

is sometimes called the blue planet. The largest is
the Pacific Ocean, it covers over 30% of the earth.
Other major oceans are Atlantic Ocean, Indian
Ocean, Southern Ocean and Artic Ocean. The Earths
oceans are home to over 230,000 different species.
Most of the oxygen we breathe comes from the
ocean. It is important we keep the oceans clean.
World Oceans Day is June 8th.

La tierra est cubierta mayormente por agua (ms del 70%)

es llamada en ocasiones el Planeta Azul. El ms grande es
el ocano pacifico, el cual cubre un 30% de la tierra. Otros
grandes ocanos que se pueden mencionar son Ocano
Atlntico, Ocano ndico, Ocano Austral y Ocano rtico.
Los ocanos de la tierra son hogar de ms de 230,000
especies diferentes. La mayora del oxgeno que respiramos
viene del ocano. Es importante mantener nuestros ocanos
limpios.
El da mundial de los ocanos es el 8 de Junio.

1 tablespoon peanut butter
8 thin pretzel sticks
Slice apples in half from top to bottom and scoop
out the cores using a knife or melon baller.
Place apple half flat side down on a small plate.
Dab peanut butter on of the lady bug, then stick
raisins onto the dabs for spots. Use this method
to make eyes to. Stick one end of each pretzel
stick into a raisin, then press the other end into
the apples to make the antennae.

FEATHERY, FUZZY AND SLIPPERY

The resplendent quetzal (ketSAHL) is a stunning bird in the trogon

family. It is recognized by the majestic vibrantly colored plumage,
fuzzy head and green tail that can measure as long as a meter.
They are weak flyers in spite of their colorful feathers. The Incas,
Mayans and Aztecs royalty used the tail feathers to decorate their
clothes. They are specialized fruit eaters but also dine on insects,
small frogs and lizards. These beautiful birds are endangered,
mostly because of loss of their habitat.

PLUMOSO, PELUDO Y ESCURRIDIZO

El Quetzal es un ave imponente de la familia trogn. Es reconocida

por su majestuoso color, plumaje, cabeza peluda y cola verde que
en ocasiones puede llegar medir hasta un metro de largo. A pesar
del colorido plumaje que posee son unos voladores dbiles. La
realeza de las tribus de Incas, Mayas, Aztecas utilizaban las plumas
de la cola para decorar su vestuario. Se especializan en comer
frutas, pero tambin comen insectos, pequeas ranas y reptiles.
Estas bellas aves se encuentran en peligro de extincin, principalmente por la prdida de su hbitat natural.

Santa Clara Area

S

anta Clara is a beach town in the Cocl Province of

Panama located off the PanAmerican Highway 11 km
past the turn off to El Valle. A small fishing village with
white sand beaches, tranquil waters, residential homes,
hotels and restaurants it is often quiet and is not usually
crowded during the week. It is frequently more popular
with locals than tourists.
The closest town to Santa Clara is Farallon which is
home to a secluded all-inclusive beach resort, as well as,
villas and condominiums. This resort offers multiple
pools, restaurants, golf, spas, water sports and a casino
for a first class vacation or well-deserved lifestyle.
Rio Hato airport also known as Scarlett Martinez International Airport is located on the site of a former military
base. The goal of this modernized airport is to serve
tourist destinations along Panamas Pacific Coast.
Playa Blanca (White Beach in Spanish) is a unique area
located about 90 minutes from Panama City. The beach
resort area offers complete hotel facilities and services. It
is one of the most visited resorts in Central America.
The exclusive beach community of Buenaventura (Good
Fortune in Spanish) is a perfect destination for the person
who likes to golf, swim, boat, bird watch, dine, socialize
or just relax on their own. Luxury homes are surrounded
by lagoons, lush gardens, and miles of white sand
beaches.

Living and playing on the beach means being aware of the tides
for walking, swimming, surfing, paddle boarding and all the fun
things to do in the ocean.
Depending on the day and time of year the tide range on the
Pacific Coast can be over 21 feet. The height of the tides vary
during the course of a month because the Moon is not always
the same distance from the Earth. Tides are caused by the
gravitational interaction between the Earth and the Moon. They
occur twice a day, two high waters and two low waters and not
at the same time each day. The gravitational attraction of the
moon causes the oceans to bulge out in the direction of the
moon. The time changes because the Moon takes about 24 hours
and 50 minutes to line up with exactly the same point of the
Earth, causing the timing of high tide to change throughout the
month.

What cause

R IPTIDES

The Panama Riviera has been known for having dangerous

riptides. Each year a number of people get caught up in a
riptide and die swimming in Panamas oceans. A riptide is a
strong channel of water moving out to sea, usually through the
surf line at speeds of up to eight feet per second.
Riptides are identified by:
A channel of churning, choppy water with a line of sea foam
or debris moving steadily out to sea.
A break in the incoming wave pattern.
Different colored water beyond the surf zone

Do not panic remain calm will help conserve energy
Do not swim towards the shore swim parallel until you
escape the riptide

mueren nadando en los ocanos de Panam. Una resaca es un fuerte canal de
agua que se mueve hacia el mar adentro, generalmente a travs de la lnea de
surf a velocidades de hasta ocho pies por segundo.
Las Resacas pueden ser detectadas por:
- Un canal de agua agitada y revuelta con una lnea de espuma del mar o
escombros en movimiento constante hacia el mar.
- Una ruptura en el movimiento de las olas.
- Agua de color diferente ms all de la zona de oleaje.

The area has many local fishing villages where you can
buy fresh off the boat or visit the Rio Hato market located on the PanAmerican Highway across from the Rio
Hato airport. They are open from 8 am to 2 pm, bring
your cooler!
Tips for choosing fresh fish or shellfish:
- Smell it, the nose knows it should have a briny or
cucumber smell and smell like the ocean
- See it, look for clear, bright eyes avoid cloudy or dull
looking eyes
- The skin should be clear, firm, metallic and bright with
no slime
- The gills should be rich red
The grocery store Riba Smith has recycling bins on the
side of the building. The recycling of paper and tin is
understood but the plastic was raising eyebrows. What
does Panama do with their plastic? Does it really get
recycled?
The short answer is yes/si. PET and HDPE plastic is
recycled. Riba Smith sends their plastic to Global Green
Logistics Inc. located in Panama Pacifico. This is an
American company and their Panama location is a division of Green New World Inc. I contacted the company
and they do indeed compact the plastic and send it to
China where it is recycled and most probably made into
something plastic you use everyday.

latas es bastante normal, pero el plstico no tanto, debido
a esto las personas se hacen preguntas como: Qu hace
Panam con el plstico? De verdad es reciclado?
La respuesta corta es s. El plstico PET y HDPE es
reciclado. Riba Smith enva sus plsticos a Global Green

Frogs and Snakes
Panama, like all countries in the world, has local wildlife that can present dangers, for humans and especially for pets.
The Bufo toad or Sapo, as its called in Panama, excretes a toxin that is hazardous to pets. Dogs commonly chase and
catch toads in their mouths. However, this toad when threatened, releases a highly toxic milky poison which can be
absorbed through the oral cavity membrane. If not treated immediately the effects are lethal. The first step of action
is to flush the mouth with water for 5-10 minutes to prevent further absorption of the venom through the mouth membranes. Panamanian folklore claims that milk will assist to dilute poison while at the same time coveringits stomach
and mouth, helping calm the irritation. Get your pet to a veterinarian right away.
Yes, Panama has snakes. There are over 150 species and the majority are nonvenomous. For the most part, snakes
avoid populated areas. There is one, the Fer de lance, which is the most poisonous snake in the country. It likes to
hang out near water and can be very aggressive.
Still, documented snake bites are rare. If bitten it is estimated that 90% of people make a full recovery. There is a six
hour window for treatment so you should have plenty of time to get to the nearest hospital.
The good news is that most of us will likely never encounter these creatures. Be aware of your environment, take
precautions, and watch where you walk - particularly at night. Dont let your fears take over preventing you from
experiencing the attraction of Panama.

From the Coronado

Area to Panama City

It is easier than you think!

1. You can catch all city-bound buses in front of the
Yogen Fruz Ice cream shop in Coronado (in front of the
Super 99 Plaza), 95% of the buses that stop there are
going to Panama City. This includes both the 30-seat
white coaster buses and the larger coach buses. The guy
standing in the door of the bus is referred to as Pavo in
Panama. He will ask where are you going and will
confirm the bus is going to Panama. All Panama buses
go to the Albrook Mall Bus Terminal. Some buses take a
loop into Chorrera. If you are pressed for time then ask
the Pavo Directo a Panama, s? He will confirm if they
are going straight to the city or doing a loop into Chorrera.
2. Board the bus and find a seat. Once the seats on the bus
are filled, the bus will not stop to pick up more passengers. You may not be asked for your money until the bus
is over The Bridge of the Americas. At that time, the
Pavo will come around and ask you for your $3 (or sometimes $2.50 or $2.75). He has a good memory and will
remember where you got on the bus. If for some reason
he does not remember you he will ask De dnde vienes?
That means where did you come from in Spanish You
have to answer the name of the place you boarded the
bus, in this case Coronado.
3. Once at the Terminal at Albrook, you can grab a taxi to
your destination or proceed into the mall to do your shopping.
If you live in San Carlos or Chame or in between, like I
do, you can still catch the bus on the highway. I stand on
the highway at the entrance of Costa Esmeralda and put
my hand out as the bus is approaching if they have room,
they will stop.
From Panama City to the Coronado Area
1. Get back to the terminal via the doors outside of El
Costo or down by the Cinemas in the Albrook Mall. You
can take the foot bridge which is located upstairs from the
Food Court.
2. If you think you are going to be a frequent bus user,
obtain a RapidPass Card so that you can get out on the
platform where the buses are waiting without having to
explain to the platform lady that you are only a tourist
before poking through your pockets to find the five cents

required to pass through. The RapidPass is obtained at

the RapidPass kiosks. Put $1 on the card and that will
take care of your entrance to and from the platforms for a
long time. If you are a very occasional bus user then just
hand the platform lady her five cents and have her let you
through the turnstiles.
3. Before getting to the platforms, you have to go and buy
your ticket at the kiosk that says Chame, San Carlos or
Anton (If you have your doubts, do not hesitate to ask
help to somebody, there is always somebody that can
speak English).
4. The price will be $2.50 -$3.00 depending on the destination of the bus you board. The ticket that they give you
will have a written number on it, which indicates which
bus to board, those buses have their number in the front in
most of the cases.
5. Go through the turnstiles, go left and look for the
names in the front window, when you find the one that
you selected to board look for the number, to be sure that
it is bus that you selected, if you are unsure, ask one of the
drivers standing in front of the bus.
6. Board the bus. Take out your book and enjoy the ride
to the beach. The Pavo most of the times will yell out the
stops before you get to your destination. When you are
disembarking you hand the Pavo your ticket.
Tips and Etiquette
All Panamanian Bus Travelers will be wearing long pants
or a skirt or a dress. You will never see anyone on board
with shorts unless they are a foreigner. You can wear
whatever you want; this is simply an observation that I
have made and have been told is part of the culture when
traveling anywhere in Panama.
When the passengers board the bus, most will address the
whole bus with a Buenas or Buenos Dias.
Most of the long haul passengers will fall asleep so watch
out for a snoozing head hitting your shoulder.
The A/C will be cold and the music will often be a little
loud. Bring a long-sleeved something if you are sensitive
to the chill.
Keep your hands on your purse and items at all times. If
you have too many bags, store them under the bus rather
than under someones seat.

Es ms fcil de lo que piensas!

1. T puedes tomar todos los buses que llevan a la ciudad
desde en frente de la heladera Yogen Fruz en Coronado (En
frente de la plaza del Super 99). El 95% de los buses que
paran all son buses que se dirigen a la ciudad de Panam.
Esto incluye ambos, los buses de 30 pasajeros Coaster y
los buses de mayor tamao que estos. La persona que se
queda al lado de la puerta del bus lo acostumbran a llamar
Pavo en Panam, este te preguntar a dnde te diriges y
te confirmar que el bus se dirige a Panam. Todos los
buses se dirigirn a la Terminal de Transporte de Albrook
Mall. Algunos buses entran por Chorrera. Si t quieres
llegar ms rpido a la Ciudad de Panam, debes preguntarle al Pavo Directo a Panam? l te confirmar que van
directo a Panam o estarn entrando en Chorrera.
2. Aborda al bus y busca tu asiento. Una vez que los asientos del bus estn llenos, el bus no parar a recoger ms
pasajeros. No te pedirn el dinero hasta que el bus vaya por
el Puente de las Amricas. Cuando llegues al Puente de las
Amricas, el Pavo ir de puesto en puesto pidiendo el dinero
del pasaje, a ti te pedir $3 (A veces $2.50 o $2.75). El Pavotiene buena memoria y recordar de donde fue que te subiste
al bus. Si se da el caso que no lo recuerde te preguntar De
dnde vienes? Tendras que responder el nombre del lugar
donde te subiste al bus, en este casoCoronado.
3. Una vez hayas llegado a la Terminal de Transporte de
Albrook Mall, puedes tomar un Taxi para llegar a tu destino
o ir al Mall para hacer tus compras. Si, como yo, vives en
San Carlos, Chame o en algn lugar entre esos, puedes
pillar el bus en la calle, yo personalmente espero al bus en
la carretera en la entrada de Costa Esmeralda y levanto mi
mano mientras que el bus se acerca, si tienen espacio se
detendrn.
De la Ciudad de Panam al rea de Coronado
1. Vuelve a la terminal de transporte por las puertas de
salida de EL Costo o abajo de los Cines en Albrook Mall.
Tambin puedes subir las escaleras en el rea de comida
rpida, para pasar por el puente que conecta al Mall con la
Terminal de Transporte.
2. Si piensas que sers un usuario frecuente de buses, se
recomienda que compres una tarjeta RapidPass para que
puedas salir a donde se encuentra la plataforma en la que
los buses estn esperando a los pasajeros sin necesidad de
buscar 5 centavos en tus bolsillos y explicarle a la dama

encargada de la salida que solamente eres un turista. La

tarjeta RapidPass es obtenida en el Quiosco RapidPass.
Pon $1 en la tarjeta y eso sera suficiente para tu entrada y
salida de las plataformas por bastante tiempo. Si raramente
utilizas buses, simplemente dale los 5 centavos a la dama
encargada de la salida para que deje pasar por los torniquetes.
3. Antes de ir a las plataformas, tienes que ir a comprar tu
tiquete a los quioscos que dicen Chame, San Carlos o Antn.
(Si tienes dudas, puedes pedir ayuda, siempre habr alguien
que te pueda ayudar).
4. Los precio ronda entre los $2.50 a $3.00 dependiendo de
tu destino del bus que abordes. El tiquete que te darn posee
un nmero escrito en l, este nmero indica el nmero del
bus al que te tienes que abordar, estos buses tienen los
nmeros regularmente al frente del mismo.
5. Pasa los torniquetes, dirgete hacia la izquierda y mira los
nombres de las rutas de los buses cuando encuentres el de la
ruta que elegiste mira al nmero del mismo para comprobar
que es el tuyo, si no ests seguro pregntale a alguno de los
conductores enfrente de los buses.
6. Aborda el bus. Toma fuera tu libro y disfruta el viaje hacia
la playa. El Pavo la mayora de las veces gritar las paradas antes de haber llegado a su destino. Cuando desembarques le entregas el tiquete al Pavo.
Tips y Etiqueta.
Todos los panameos que viajan en bus utilizarn pantalones largo o una falda o un vestido. Nunca vers a nadie con
shorts a menos que sea un extranjero. Puedes vestir lo que tu
deseas; esto es simplemente una observacin que yo he
hecho y me han contado que es parte de la cultura cuando
viajas a cualquier lado de Panam.
Cuando los pasajeros suben a bordo del bus, la mayora
dir al entrar al bus Buenas o Buenos das.
La mayora de los que viajan largas distancias caen dormidos, as que ten cuidado con una cabeza dormida cayndote
en el hombro.
El Aire acondicionado ser fro y la msica acostumbra a
ser un poco fuerte. Lleva manga larga si eres sensible al fro.
Mantn tus manos en tus bolsos y cosas en todo momento. Si
tienes demasiadas bolsas, gurdalas abajo del bus en lugar
del puesto de alguien ms.
