Art Final Sustainability Fall 2015

DUE: 12/02
During the first week of class you each brought in an artifact from your life to
demonstrate or exemplify your understanding of sustainability. You have gone to
the Portland Art Museum and analyzed a piece of art by connecting it to theory
read in class. Now it is your turn to create a piece that embodies the concept of
sustainability you have studied through a variety of theories and texts.
At the end of your first term, think about what sustainability means to you and why
you think it is important.
Then figure out how you can represent your answer artistically. This must be an
original work created for this assignment (i.e., repurposed items will fail). Should
you paint it? Make a short film? Should you build a statute or structure? Should
you photograph it? Should you draw it by hand or generate a computer image?
The assignment is limited only by three things: your imagination, the law, and NO
COLLAGES.
Keep in mind that you need to be able to transport your piece to and from class.

In addition, write a 300 word explanation of the piece using a

large font like this one (it should fit on one page), to be
displayed beside your art, that describes how your piece
represents your answer to the question and how it is informed by
a theory(ies) from Marx, Locke, Marcuse, or Cahn. Be sure to
consider how the material you used contributes to that answer.
Grades will be based upon how much thought and care you put into the project
AND how well you explain how it connects to the course texts. This is a good
place and time to take creative risks.
