Day of Service Activity

Due: Reflection Essay 2/1
Time Allocation: 10 hours (6 volunteering, 4 on essay)
Objective: This activity focuses on our role in contributing to a socially sustainable community.

Step I: Choose one of the following volunteer options:

Option I: Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service
When: Monday, January 18th busses leave at 8:30am and return at 3:30pm

Option II: Hands on Greater Portland

When: Project must be completed by Saturday, January 26th

Step II: Two-three page Critical Reflection Essay

Right after your project take 30 minutes or so to freewrite on the experience. Dont
censor yourself; you never know what will be useful later. Use these as notes for your
essay.
In the essay, briefly explain the activity(ies) you participated in and what you
accomplished.
What are your thoughts and observations about the day? (This is a critical reflection,
meaning it involves critical thinking, not This was stupid or This was awesome!).
Conduct an analysis by connecting your thoughts and observations to concepts from
The Second Sex, Introduction or Dehumanized. Use specific quotes and examples
to explain your observations and connections.
