Computer Science for 6th grade

1. Standards: 3.A.8.1:Use digital tools to plan and organize research- based inquiry.
2. Observable objectives:
SWBAT describe a specific career path using a powerpoint presentation to
guide their discussion
SWBAT repeat information about their career by utilizing various sources
3. Instruction-learning process:
Teacher will begin the class by asking students to share what they want to be when they grow up.
This will get the students talking and thinking about various career choices. The Teacher will
share their own career path choices with the students. For example, I worked at taco bell and
subway in my early 20s. I then became a Union Ironworker where I realised I wanted to go back
to school to be a teacher and have a job option with more security.

Activities- The teacher will tell students that today we will begin a career research project.

1. The first step for this project, each student will take an interest profiler.

other research sources)
2. Based on results, students will choose a career path for their research project.
3. Students can use the links below to conduct research on their career path.

Students will be taught using a powerpoint presentation the importance of reliable

sources, what it means to plagiarize, and how to create a google slides presentation.

4. Finally, students will be released to work on creating their google slide presentation that
is located on google classroom.
5. Students will have a few days to gather research and facts on their reports and then
presentations in front of the class will begin.

5. Reflection: I used the Flipped Instruction model. I used this model because I
believe a lot in working with technology, projects, and kinesthetic learners. So, in this
assignment students will go over what a career is and the different types of careers.
They will then hop on the computer and take the interest profiler which will ask the
questions about their interests and hobbies. At the end of the test it will give them their
best fit of career choices, based on the questions. The student will then use different
resources to investigate and produce a powerpoint presentation that will then present to
the class. The grade level for this is a middle school assignment, primarily 6th grade
when students take computer science. This assignment will have students engaged by
researching and creating their own powerpoint. One strength that students will gain from
this assignment is getting a better understanding of what they would like to do after high
school and help them on their path. A weakness that can come up from this assignment
is students will think that they are not interested in researching their careers. However,
once they take the interest profile test and see their results and compare them to their
classmates then will they be interested.
