Becoming a Union Ironworker
● Applicants must be at least 18 years of age and must have the minimum of a high school education. At the
time of making application, each applicant must present proof of age and proof of high school graduation,
G.E.D. or DD-214 showing completion

● Applicants must appear in person to complete an application form

● Applicants must be physically able to do work normally performed in the trade

● Once hired by a company the applicant becomes an apprentice.


○ Two times every semester for four years the applicant will take classes to gain knowledge on his
career
What a Union Ironworker does?
● Position and secure steel bars or mesh in concrete forms in order to reinforce concrete. Use
a variety of fasteners, rod-bending machines, blowtorches, and hand tools. Includes rod
busters.
● Work with Post-tensioning cables on skyscrapers
● Review blueprints or specifications to determine work requirements
● Properly rig and use a crane to fly rebar to certain locations
