Grammar

1. The adverb "* or the prefix "*-

1) "* + Action Verb or Action Verb Stem + -Al "*i3lg.

~ JiI<>ll "* 7} Jt. ~JiI<>ll 7}Al "*-5lB_.

2) Descriptive Verb Stem + -Al "*'5}g.

I can't go to school.

This is not good.

Notes:

CD When the adverb "* or the prefix "*- is used with action verbs, it indicates impossibility. Therefore, its English equivalent is 'can't' or 'unable to'.

® As in the above examples, "* or "*- is used in two kinds of formations without changing the meaning of the sentences.

@ When it is used with a descriptive verb, only the D.V.S. + -Al "* '5}g. form is possible. Generally D.V.S. + -Al ~g. is used much more than D.V.S. + -Al "*'5}g..

2. The adverb oJ or the prefix oJ- + A. V.S.

~JiI<>ll oJ 7}~e>1iL I will not go to school.

oJ ~~) e>1.fL. I will not eat.

1) oJ- is the contracted from of o}y. The contracted form is used more often than the full form.

2) It is normally used with action verbs, while the -Al ~g. form is used with descriptive verbs.

3) The pattern V.S. + -(_~)tB oJ ~g. means literally 'if someone does so-and-so (or is so-and-so), it won't do'.

Ali?- 7}tB oJ ~ yg.. You must not go now ..

4) The pattern also occurs in questions, where it corresponds to English 'can't I do so-and-so?' or 'can't it be so-and-so?' See the following examples:

Ali?- 7}tB oJ ~ YlJ}?

~l, Ali?- 7}tB oJ ~ yg..

Can't I go now?

No(i.e., that's right), you can'ttor,

Korean People and Language

People started living on the Korean peninsula about 500,000 years ago. The Korean people's forefathers were called the 'Yemaekjok", a lineage from the northern Altaic. After the Neolithic era, these people traveled to the Korean peninsula and settled there. About 5,000 years ago, during the Bronze age, they established 'KoChosen'. In the southern part of the Korean peninsula, the three 'Han' countries, Jin-Han, Ma-Han, and Pyon-Han, were flourishing. At about this time we began calling ourselves the 'Han' people. It is assumed that the 'Han' character in Han-guk came from the 'Han' character of the Han countries. 'Han' has the meaning of "big" and also "one", but is different from the Han race in China.

The language of the Korean peninsula is of Altaic lineage, and its closest relative is souther" Tungus. After the seventh century, while the nation of Shilla unified the three kingdoms, the language of the Korean peninsula became one. After the 14th century, while Seoul became the capital of the Chosen Kingdom, its language became the standard. Han-gul (the Korean alphabet) was created in 1443 by the King Sejong of the Chosen dynasty. Han-giil is known worldwide and recognized as a original and scientific alphabet.
