Region of the Hopi Indians


The Hopi Indians live in present day Arizona. Arizona is surrounded by the states
of California, Colorado, Nevada, New Mexico and Utah. Arizona is also on the border
of the country of Mexico. The Hopi Indians would live near the rivers such as the
Colorado River, Little Colorado River and lakes like Lake Mead and Lake Mohave.
The Grand Canyon goes through Arizona. The Hopi people collected salt near the
Grand Canyon. The Hopi believe that two brothers made the Grand Canyon with
lightening bolts.
The climate is really warm and dry. Arizona is known for having cactus. The
state flower of Arizona is a cactus.

Basic Necessities of the Hopi Indians


The Hopi people wore deerskin moccasin shoes. Men usually wore little cloths
except for a breech-cloths or short kilts and cloth headbands. Women wore dresses
called mantas. This is what the Hopi Indians used for cloths.
The Hopi Indians lived in adobe houses. These are like an apartment. The adobe
houses could fit whole entire tribes or clans in the houses. The houses were built out of
clay made into hardened brick.
The Hopi men were hunters and would hunt game. The woman would collect
herbs and nuts. The Hopis planted and harvested corn, beans and squash. They also
grow cotton and tobacco. They had turkeys they raised for food.
The Hopis had bows to hunt and spears to defend their territory. For farming they
had wooden tools. The woman used shells and pump drills to make beads. They made
cloths with the cotton they grew on weaving spindles and looms.

The Hopi Culture

The Hopi Indians had chiefs, or leaders. The most recognized of these were Chief
Dan and Chief Tuba. They were a tribe of peace, not war. Hopis were known for being
silversmiths, weavers and making pottery. They were raided by other tribes such as the
Navajo.
The Hopis have ceremonies and traditions. They Hopis religion believes that
everything, including elements, animals and plants have a soul. For religious
ceremonies they used underground places called kivas. They used dolls called Kachinas
in their ceremonies. They did not paint their face or bodies unless it was for religious
ceremonies.
In Hopi culture, instead of parents naming their baby, the women of the tribe
would pick names. When the baby is 3 weeks old the women would give their name
suggestions. Then the parents would pick from the names.
The Hopi people try to teach their children the traditional way of life and get an
education. Today, the Hopi continue their struggle to maintain their own unique way of
life. The dessert location has helped maintain this life.
