Bibliography for the STEM of Depression

Equilibrium Kinesiology Supplies

In this site there are a list of hormones. These hormones all play a role in the human
brain and in combating common diseases, such as depression. The hormones that I
need to focus on are: serotonin, dopamine, and norepinephrine because they offset the
symptoms of depression. These hormones can all be altered, but only from external
products, such as prescription drugs and exercise. This source was credible because it
is selling hormones so that scientists can do research with them. If this source wasnt
correct, then they wouldnt sell any product.

All About Depression
In this site there is an outline on how depression affects the brain in an adverse way
and how the brain reacts to depression. Once the brain has to react to the change, the
endocrine system has to send hormones to offset this disparity of dopamine. This
source is credible because it portrays the entire system of hormones and backs it up
with scientific results. The site also addresses possible cures or activities that might
help depression and also provides plenty of background information on depression.

National Institute of Mental Health on Depression
This website talks mostly about the symptoms and cures for depression. Mainly this site
lists off various ways to treat depression including psychotherapies, brain stimulation
therapies, and medications. These therapies all have side effects and are a risk for the
patients to do. Also, it outlines that many things can offset equilibrium such as genetics,
trauma and even symptoms of other medications. This source is credible because it is a
government website that has nothing to gain by publishing the work incorrectly.

Behavioral Outcomes of Monoamine oxidase deficiency
This website talks about the effects that Monoamine oxidase deficiency has on the
body. To start, Monoamine Oxidase is split up into two isoenzymes: A and B and can be
abbreviated MAO-A and MAO-B. They both are mitochondrial bound proteins and have
different functions. MAO-A likes and encourages dopamine and serotonin to be
produced in the brain, while MAO-B diminishes these chemicals. When depression hits
MAO-B is produced and destroys the happy chemicals. This source is credible
because it was carried out by The National Library for Health, and they have images to
back up their explanations.

Depression: Causes, Symptoms, and Treatments
This site listed most of the causes and symptoms of depression. These causes can
include trauma, and chemical imbalances in the brain. Also an inactive thyroid gland can
really cause depression. Some symptoms include lower sex drive, inability to focus, and
thoughts of suicide. Mainly this site stated why antidepressants work and how they
stimulate the brains chemicals. This site is somewhat credible in that there are a lot of
statistics to back up their findings, but there isnt a whole lot of science to support their
statements. This site does, however, use a lot of logical statements and more
understandable science to get less-educated people educated.

What are Neurotransmitters?
At this website I found out the functions of serotonin and dopamine. I also found the
functions of norepinephrine and epinephrine: they are excitatory neurotransmitters that
cause depression-like symptoms including anxiety and loss of sleep. Dopamine is
considered both an inhibitory and excitatory neurotransmitter. This is because dopamine
stimulates the brain and keeps the brain focused. Serotonin is inhibitory and controls
the brains moods. If the inhibitory chemicals are depleted, then the brain will likely be
depressed and imbalanced. There is no way for the brain to naturally produce more
serotonin and dopamine, so people have to take drugs to reset the balance. This
website is definitely credible because nothing on their page is wrong and everything is
thoroughly explained in a way anyone can understand.
