Kitchi and the day the earth broke

Kitchi was a strong akicita, brave warrior who lived in oblaye. The area in which Kitchi was
encamped in was unfamiliar to him and the people. It was where many had spoken of for the
game and fresh vegetation.
Kitchi gathered supplies for his people as he inspected the area. Suddenly the maka(earth)
began to rumble its displeasure. He ran back to the tiny encampment. Women and children
were frightened and running around trying to keep things calm. Kitchi saw the warriors
preparing to go out into battle for they believed that it was their enemy who had enraged the
greater being and they must correct the mistake.
They rode out on their horses to see what the maka had wanted.
What they saw was branches from trees on the ground and the dirt shaken up.
There appears to be no damage. But what did we feel? Kitchi wondered aloud to all those
who could hear him.
But Kitchi there must be some other thing here. Everyone in the camp was panicked. One of
the men said.
We must tell them something to calm the women and children. Another had spoken up.
Then the earth shook again and this time there was more damage. A cloud of dust erupted
and a group of riders came up.
The men on the horses were the enemies of Kitchis peple. They continually stole and raided
his camp. The same was expected in return. Many of the horses they had now were stolen.
The blame was to be on the enemies for the disaster that would ensue.
A challenge was set between the two war companies that if Kitchi was to go and touch
(counting coup) and defeat the enemys leader then the earth will not be forever destroyed.
The warriors went back to their camps to prepare for the battle before them.
The next morning as the sun rose, it seemed that all life near could sense this was a big
battle. The women and children stayed behind to prepare for what was to be next.
Kitchi and his men rode out to meet the enemy. The clash began. Yells and whoops rung in
the air as the horses galloped closer. Kitchi was on one mission and the men seemed to fall
away from him. Collisions occurred all around him as he charged for the leader.
Time slowed and every sound went away.
As Kitchi tapped the leader on the head with his staff a great thunder ripped through the air
and a huge rumble of great magnitude shook the warriors and scared the horses. A great tear
in the earth came about.
The warriors and Kitchi realized that it was the result of the battle greatly won, not between
the two camps but with the earth. The wrong was righted.
This is the story of Kitchi and the day the earth broke.
