LoveandMarriage
Everythingchanges.Thatisauniversalconceptthatweallknowtobetrue.Butinthe
timebetweenthe16thCenturyandPresentDay,nothinghasprobablychangedmorethan
humanity'sunderstandingofthetermMarriage.Rightnowinthe21stCentury,weinstantly
associatetheideaofbeinginlovewithaperson,withtheideaofgettingmarriedtosaidperson.
Whereasbackinthe16thCentury(thetimeinwhichShakespearelivedandwrote
Romeoand
Juliet
)thatwasquitetheopposite!Marriagewasviewedasabusinesstransactionofsorts,a
chancetomergefamiliesandeveninsomesituations,nations.Monarchsandparents
everywhere,wouldmarryofftheirownchildren,incheapattemptstogainmoney,power,or
evenjustrespectintheircommunities.Bothlove,andtheirchildren'sfeelingswerepushedaside
asanafterthought.AndIthinkitsatthismomentthatyouthereader,shouldcallyourparents
andthankthemforbeingrespectfulenoughtoneverforceyoutomarrysomerandomkid.

,thetwostarcrossedloversfalldeeplyinloveandJulietrejectsher
father'snotionthatshemarrythenoble,yetdecidedlyboringParis,andinsteadmarrieswhom
shebelievestobetheloveofherlife.Sherealizesthatmarriageshouldntbeaboutbusiness,or
money,likeitsocommonlywasinthe16thCentury.Marriageshouldbeaboutlove,andthe
feelingofwantingtobewithsomeoneyourentirelife.AsshestatesinAct3,Scene5,Line118,
Heshallnotmakemeathereajoyfulbride!Julietisenragedbytheideaofmarryingaman
thatshedoesnotlove!Thisstartsoffthechainofeventsthatleadtothehorribletragedyatthe
endofthestory.Shakespearerealizedthedestructivepowerofforcinglovewhilehewaswriting
theplay,andmadethecleverdecisiontouseitasacatalysttosparktheconflict.
Inconclusion,whilewenowliketothinkthatthereasonyougetmarriedisbecauseyou
lovesomeone,inthetimeofWilliamShakespeare,marriagewasoftenarrangedbyparentsfor
somekindofgain.Thisisevidencedby
RomeoandJuliet
,whenJulietsfathertriestomarryher
offtoaprincenamedParis,sohecanhavemorepowerfulconnections.Itisinsanethattheidea
ofanarrangedmarriagewasonceconsideredperfectlynormal,butisitanymoreinsanethan
