The Tale of King Shahryār and of his

Brother, King Shahzaman


Characteristics of King Shahryār
- He was an heroic horsemen, taller than her brother King Shahzamār, then he inherited
the place of his father and rule the kingdom of Sāsān, in the isles of India and China. King
Shahryār reigned over the lands and governed his people with justice because of that his
kingdom loved him.
Characteristics of King Shahzamān
- He was also an heroic horsemen like his older and taller brother, King Shahzamān on the
other hand ruled the kingdom of Samarkand al-Ajam. He is also the one who reveals to
his brother King Shahryār that his wife is cheating on him.
Other characters of the story
1. Scheherazade's Father - Scheherazade's Father, he is called Wazīr in the story is
the vizier of King Shahryar. Every day, on the king's order, he beheads the brides
of Shahryar. He does this for many years until all the unmarried women in the
kingdom have either been killed or run away, at which point his own daughter
Scheherazade offers to marry the king.
2. Scheherazade or Shahrazad - is the legendary Persian queen who is the
storyteller and narrator of The Nights. She is the daughter of the kingdom's vizier
and the older sister of Dunyazad. Against her father’s wishes, she marries King
Shahryar, who has vowed that he will execute a new bride every morning. For
1,001 nights, Scheherazade tells her husband a story, stopping at dawn with a
cliffhanger. This forces the King to keep her alive for another day so that she
could resume the tale at night.
3. Dunyazad - is the younger sister of Queen Scheherazade. In the story cycle, it is
she who—at Scheherazade's instruction—initiates the tactic of cliffhanger
storytelling to prevent her sister's execution by Shahryar.
Settings of the Tale/Story
- King Shahryār saw his queen and other concubines clasped with slaves in his garden He
was so shocked that he decided to abandon his throne, the kingdom and the palace and
persuaded his brother to do the same. Together, they decided to wander the earth till
they found someone who was as unfortunate as they were. After much wandering, they
did find one who suffered a worse betrayal and it was not a frail human but a mighty and
ferocious Jinni.
