The New Orleans Palestinian Solidarity Committee (NOPSC) calls on Louisiana House

Representatives to oppose House Resolution 170 an Islamophobic act targeting Muslim

Americans.
The Resolution would specifically urge and request law enforcement and governmental
agencies in Louisiana to avoid and suspend all contacts and outreach activities with the
Council on American Islamic Relations (CAIR). CAIR is the nations largest Muslim
civil rights and advocacy organization. It works to promote religious freedom and has
opposed Islamophobia across the country.
NOPSC calls on House Representatives to stand with Muslims and civil and religious
rights of Muslim and all Americans and against racist and religious hatred of the kind
promoted by Trump. Islamophobia has increased throughout the GOP nomination race,
with Trump encouraging racist remarks. For example, in fall 2015, a Trump supporter
stated: We have a problem in this country. Its called Muslimswhen can we get rid of
them? Instead of rejecting the anti-Muslim assertion, Trump responded: "A lot of people
are saying that and a lot of people are saying that bad things are happening out there.
We're going to be looking at that..." Thousands of American Muslims have also faced
secret surveillance and discrimination imposed through federal watch lists. Voting for HR
170 stands in support of this type of Trump-promoted Islamophobia.
NOPSC also condemns the fact that CAIR is being charged with supporting terrorism for
its support of rights of Muslims, and especially condemns the fact that evidence of
contact between CAIR and Hamas a democratically elected governing party in
Palestine is being used to declare the organization in support of terrorism.
Today, we hope Louisiana representatives will stand against hate speech, intimidation,
racism, and Islamophobia by voting against HR 170, and thus affirm the constitutionally
protected right of all citizens to live without fear and intimidation and to practice their
freedom of faith.
