Theme Analysis Final

Because, selfishness and pride controls our actions, people act on their own
feelings and emotions.
In the beginning of Scarlet Ibis, Brother was very selfish and cared about how he was
portrayed to others. The reason why Brother helps Doodle walk is because [he is]...
ashamed of having a crippled brother (4). Brother is ashamed and he doesnt think
about how Doodle feels. Brother is worried about how he is portrayed to his friends and
this is related to the theme because it shows pride and how he didnt want to be viewed
a certain way. His selfishness is revealed and connects to pride by being self-centered
and absorbed. Brothers actions were for own good and didnt consider Doodles
feelings.
This exemplifies Brothers indirect characterization and shows his morals, worries
and what theyre about. In the beginning, Brother was very selfish and cared about how

Brother had an interest of helping Doodle but He did it for [himself]... (6) instead
of Doodle. This shows his characterization being changed. Brother had a different
incentive and wanted Doodle to walk so Brother wouldnt be embarrassed. The task
was accomplished but this shows how uncaring he was for Doodles emotions and how
focused he was on his own emotions. His characteristics in the beginning of the story
show the selfishness coursing his actions and then he changes by realising the selfabsorbed reason and started to feel the guilt. Pride is the thematic idea and Brother is
overwhelmed with pride. The reason why helped Brother was because he wanted to be
content with having a normal brother instead of embarrassed that Doodle cannot walk.
In the story, personification is used to explain how an inanimate object is doing
something human like, its almost like a metaphor. Hope no longer [hides]... but
[perches] like a cardinal. (3) is an example of personification. Hope is inanimate but its
a reference to Brother, who is finally hopeful. This quote is explaining how Brother is
finally able to move forward with hope and he is well aware of his aspirations and desire
for Doodle and his ability to walk.
