The Akashi
Kaiko Bridge

The Akashi Kaiko Bridge


This is the
longest
suspension
bridge in the
world.
Above the
Akashi Strait
between Maiko,
Tarumi-ward in
Kobe, and
Matsuho, on
Awaji Island.

It has 6 lanes and


can support cars
going 100 km/hr.
The bridge has a
total length of
12,832 feet (2.43
miles).
It was only slightly
damaged in The
Great Hanshin
Earthquake of 1995
which destroyed
much of Kobe. It
was built to stand a
8.5 Richter-scale
quake.

The bridge is a 3-span 2-hinged truss-stiffened suspension bridge.

90,000 tons of steel were used in constructing the stiffening girders so it


can withstand the strong winds in the strait (which can gust up to 179 mph).

To reduce stiffening girder torsional


vibration caused by wind, stabilizing
plates were installed under the
median strip of the deck. The
stabilizers act to guide the wind,
reducing torsional vibration by
achieving a balance between
pressures on the bridge lower and
upper surfaces.

The main body of the anchorage contains 140,000 m3 of


concrete and weighs 350,000 tons.
