Montresors Truth
In the short story The Cask Of Amontillado by Edgar Allan Poe a character
named Montresor tells the story of how he got revenge on his enemy Fortunato because
Fortunato insults Montresor. There is evidence throughout the story that show the reason
Montresor is telling this story is because he is confessing to someone about the crime.
In the beginning of the story Montresor said, When he ventured upon insult, I
vowed revenge and will not suppose, however, I gave utterance to a threat. This quote
shows that Montresor is retelling his story about his crime to someone he knows and
trusts. Also it shows that Montresor explained why he wanted revenge and what got him
mad at Fortunato. Montresor seem to be confessing what he did and that the reason he did
the crime was due to feeling threatened. (174)
After Montresor find Fortunato they have the following conversation come..we
will go back; your health is precious.. You are a man to be missed and I cannot be
responsible.. Enough the cough is a mere nothing. This conversation shows that
Montresor is starting to have second thoughts of continuing to do his crime and make an
excuse so that they could not continue. Montresor seems to care a bit for Fortunato health
but wants to make sure that he will be able to get revenge. Montresor said this to show
that he wants Fortunato alive so that Fortunato would die from Montresor revenge.

While in the process of doing his crime, Montresor has this thought a succession
of loud and shrill scream, bursting suddenly from the throat of the chained form, seem to
thrust me violently, for a brief moment I hesitated-I trembled. This shows that while
hearing the scream of Fortunato Montresor starts to have second thoughts of doing his
crime. It also shows that Montresor is hesitating to finish his crime, which people can
conclude that he feels guilty and wanted to confess later on. Montresor seems to have lost
his confidents of being able to get revenge without getting caught.(179)

After completing the crime Montresor said, my heart grew sick on account of
the dampness of the catacombs. The quote supports the idea that Montresor feel guilt
about what he just did and could also be a reason to confess. It shows that Montresor is
regretting doing his crime, which seems to be bothering Montresor and is why he blames
the dampness of the catacombs for feeling sick. (179) At the end of the story Montresor
said, in pace requiescat. The quote translates to rest in peace and shows that Montresor
still has a bit of respect for Fortunato. if Montresor had a bit of respect for Fortunato the
Montresor would have told someone what had happen to Fortunat and why. (179)

To conclude, throughout the story there has been evidence that show that
Montresor is confessing due to guilt and regret which can end up leading him to tell the
truth of what had happen to Fortunato. Montresor is confessing so that he could get
forgiveness for getting revenge on Fortunato.
