Mounts maul Demons

Blues
kick 11
goals in
quarter
BY ADAM BOURKE

OUNT Pleasant
can be regarded
as a genuine
top five threat
after handing White Hills a
14-goal hiding in round two
of the Heathcote District
Football Netball League.
After scoring a 79-point
win over LBU in round one,
the Blues were even more
impressive in round two,
defeating the Demons 23.14
(152) to 10.8 (68).
The Blues unleashed an
11-goal to one second term
and had 13 individual goal
kickers in arguably their
best performance in coach
Derrick Filos reign.
The Blues had a plethora
of good players, headed by
Carl Thiesz, Josh Shaw, John
Harvey and Jesse Tuohey.
White Hills had been
spoken about as one of
the big improvers of the
HDFNL this season, but the
Demons first game of the
season couldnt have gone
much worse.
We were lucky to be that
close at quarter-time and
then in the second quarter it
was a total lack of accountability, White Hills coach
Carl Hardingham said.
We didnt man up and
didnt put pressure on their
players. We turned the ball
over by foot you do all that
youre going to lose.
Very frustrating to start
the year like that because
we had higher expectations
than that.
The Demons were missing
five senior players, but
Hardingham said there was
no excuse for the way his
side played in the first half.
We had a few out,
but the problem was the
effort wasnt there, Hard-

ingham said.
The players we had on
the park had the ability, but
the workrate and accountability wasnt there. You cant
have teams kick 11 goals
against you in a quarter.
Jason Curtain, Lachlan
Furness, David Wright and
Gavin Bowles were best for
the Demons.
Hardingham was
impressed with Mounts
midfield brigade.
Theyve got some quick
players and they didnt
waste the ball by foot,
he said.
They opened us up with
good use of the ball. They
always look quicker when
you turn the ball over as
much as we did.
The Demons face the
unbeaten Huntly next week,
while Mounts have the bye.
Colbinabbin bounced
back from its first round loss
to Huntly to defeat Leitchville-Gunbower
A best on ground performance from coach Nick
Knight was the catalyst for
the Grasshoppers 15.14
(104) to 9.9 (63) win.

We had an even spread of

contributors today which is
something we were lacking last
week.
Colbinabbin coach Nick Knight
After an even first half,
Colbo kicked nine goals to
four after the main break.
We had an even spread of
contributors today which is
something we were lacking
last week, Knight said after
the win.
We were disciplined with
our structures for four quarters today whereas we went
away from that last week.
It was really pleasing to
run out the game like that on
such a big ground.
Knight bagged five goals
and picked up a swag possessions, while full-forward
Ryan Hon kicked four goals
for the second week in a row.
The Grasshoppers
midfielder brigade of Knight,
Tom Hill, Patty OBrien
and Sam Vale proved to be

the difference between the

two teams.
The result left the
Bombers winless from
two matches.
Last years runners-up
were best served by Jackson
McEwen, Matthew Perri
(four goals), Will Brereton
and Adam Decicco.
North Bendigo overcame
a first-half scare from Heathcote to defeat the Saints by
54 points at Pigeon Park.
The unheralded Saints
were level with the powerful
Bulldogs at half-time, but
a seven-goal to three third
term from the reigning
premiers cracked the
game open.
They went on to win
20.12 (132) to 12.6 (78),
with Sam Barnes and Jarrod

Findlay bagging 14 goals

between them.
Heathcote were on top of
us in the contested footy in
the first half, North Bendigo
coach Rob Bennett said.
Theyve improved from
last year, they have some
bigger bodies and they used
the ball well at times today.
It just shows the league
is getting better and if youre
slightly off, which we were
for 75 per cent of the game
today, sides will put you to
the sword.
Aside from Barnes (eight
goals) and Findlay (six
goals), midfielder Sean
Morris, young gun Storm
Giri, skipper Jordan Ford
and ruckman Brett Strange
were the Bulldogs best.
Darren Turner kicked four
goals for the Saints, while
Liam Jacques, Joel Condon
and Jack Paisley were their
best players.
A nine-goal haul from star
midfielder Ryan Semmel
was the highlight of Huntlys
125-point thrashing of Lockington-Bamawm United.
Four of Semmels nine
goals came in the final

quarter as the Hawks cruised

to a 27.12 (174) to 7.7
(49) victory.
We had to make sure we
played four quarters and I
was very happy with how we
went, Huntly coach Jamie
Hogan said.
Semmel and Harry
Whittle rotated between the
midfield and deep forward,
with Semmel in particular
giving the Cats defenders
plenty of headaches.
Ryan took some good
marks and was kicking goals
from everywhere. He had a
day out, Hogan said.
Hogan lauded Jaydon
Cowling and Phil Ryan for
their defensive job on Cats
star Matt Bongiovanni, while
Jacob Greenwood was at his
creative best.
Matt Klein-Breteler is
relishing his new role off
half-back, while ruckman
Tom Skewes gave the Hawks
midfield first use of the ball.
The Cats battled hard
against the odds, particularly
in the first three quarters.
Their lack of depth showed
in the final quarter when the
Hawks piled on 8.5 to 0.2.
