This week's PALs activities included assessments in phoneme segmentation, nonsense word fluency, and oral reading fluency. Students also played memory with Fry sight words. They read the story Rainbow Fish and completed a graphic organizer to describe characters, settings, events, and how the main character changes. They made predictions and discussed how details in the story help describe characters and predict events.

Nonsense Word Fluency: 1 minute assessment Oral Reading Fluency: 1 minute assessment Sight Word Work: This week we played memory with the words from list one on the Fry sight word list. Common Core Activity: Standard: I can describe characters, settings, and major events in fictional stories using key details. RL 1.3 & 1.7 Objective: The student will be able to describe characters from the story and explain cause and effect situations in the story. Assessment: We will complete a graphic organizer together that includes descriptions of characters, cause and effect, and predictions. We will discuss the story and how Rainbow Fish changes from the beginning of the story to the end of the story. Instruction/Guided Practice: o We will read the first page description of Rainbow Fish and use our graphic organizer to brainstorm a description of Rainbow Fish. o We will read the story all the way through Starfish telling Rainbow to go see Octopus. o Next, we will use the graphic organizer to describe the cause and effect of Rainbow Fish refusing to share his scales. o We will continue to read through Rainbow giving Little Blue Fish a scale and we will use the graphic organizer to describe Rainbow Fish during this event. o Next, we will make a prediction about what will happen next in the story. o We will finish reading the story. When we are done we will discuss the graphic organizer and how Rainbow Fish changes throughout the story. Closure: We can use many different parts of a story to help us describe character and make predictions about what will happen next.
