Module on Writing a Short Descriptive Paragraph About a
Character or Setting in Stories Listened to!
A descriptive paragraph describes a thing, a person, or a
place. Detailed information allows the reader to form an
image in his or her imagination. Writing a descriptive
paragraph with a focus on identifying and generating
sensory-based descriptive language allows the writer to paint
using words and it allows the readers to easily picture or
visualize, or feel that they are involved in the experience.
This module was designed to provide you with fun and
meaningful opportunities for guided and independent
learning at your own pace and time. You will be enabled to
process the contents of the learning resource while being an
active learner.
NOTE:
Use the module with care. Do not put unnecessary mark/s on
any part of the module. Use a separate sheet of paper in
answering the activities.
What I Need to Know

This module provides activities that will help you how

to describe a particular situation, person, place, object,
and to create a word picture that appeals to your
five senses.
We all have friends, families, belongings, and
experiences. The way we describe each differs in
some aspects.
We tell how something looks, feels, tastes, sounds,
and smells by using our five senses.
A simple description of a particular situation, person,
place, or object can explain the mood of the writer.
At the end of this module, you are expected to:
1. describe person, object, place, and situation
precisely based on stories listened to;
2. use appropriate vocabulary to complete a short
descriptive paragraph; and
3. write a short descriptive paragraph about a
character or setting in stories listened to.

What I Know
Put a () mark on the sentence that best describes
each picture.

1. An old man is walking with his

granddaughter.
A young man is walking with his

with ribbons on it.

3. The weather was windy, so

they rest for a while in the park.

an angry kitten with its mom.
While walking home, they saw

Notes to the Teacher

The teacher must consider the prerequisite skills needed in
the development of this competency including the schema or
background knowledge which may reinforce learning. This
module will help the learners bridge the gap of learning to attain
mastery of the lesson in its spiral progression.
What’s New

Do you know that you can paint pictures with

words? We can paint with words by simply describing
something or someone by how it looks or feels.
1. What can you say about the picture?
2. Can you describe it using your senses?
3. Can you write descriptive sentences?
4. What can you composed when you
write sentences that have one central idea?

What is It

A descriptive paragraph creates a word picture.

It often includes details that appeal to the five
senses. When we describe something, we use
adjectives. We convey to the reader how something
looks, feels, tastes, sounds, and smells.
Here is a short example to show how helpful a
descriptive paragraph is in explaining one’s
experience.
“My favorite food is chocolate. It smells bitter but
tastes sweet and feels hard when frozen. It melts in
my mouth. I can’t wait to eat chocolates again!”
Good descriptive paragraphs are amusing to
read because they fuel your fancy and imagination.
