ProblemStatement:
Freddie,SallyandFrashyallbelievethattheyhavethebest
formula/shortcut.FreddieShortsaysthatheh

Process:
IstartedoffwithFreddiebecausehiswastheonethathadthesimplest
andshortestone.Hehasaformulatofindtheareaofanypolygononageoboard
thatconsistsofnopegsontheinterior.Idrewmyinnouttableandwithfourpegs
Icreatedoneunitsquarewithzeroontheinterior.SofarmyincolumnIputwrote
downafourbecauseittookfourpegstocreatethesquareunitandformyoutI
saidonebecauseitmadeonesquareunitandisalsothearea.AsIwentonIwent
biggerandbiggerandmynextanswerwouldbesix(In)andmyareawouldbetwo.
Icontinuedthispatternanddiscoveredthatmyequationis
y= 2x

Thisequation

ismostfittingbecauseifyoudividethex(whichistheIn)by2andminusthatby
oneitgivesyouyournextanswer.Allthepolygonswereeithersquaresor
rectangles.

Sallysshortcutwasforanygeoboardpolygonwithexactlyfourpegsonboundary.
AllIhadtofigureoutishowmanypegsareontheinterior.Whichwaspretty
muchsimilartowhatFreddiewasaskingmetodo.InsteadoftheInsorxs
representingpegsonboundaryitwasrepresentinghowmanywereontheinterior.
ThefirstInIgotwasonebecausethatwaswhatwasontheinteriorandmyout
waseightbecausethatwasonboundary.MynextInwastwo(againthatisthe
amountofpegsontheinterior)andmyOutwasten.Icontinuedthispatternand
theequationIgotwas
2x+2=A.J
ustlikeFreddie,mostofmypolygonsconsisted
ofsquaresorpolygons.

Frashysproblemwasalittlebitmoredifficultformebecauseitwasdifferent
fromFreddiesandSallys.Frashysproblemwassayingthatifbymakinganytype
ofpolygononageoboard,tellherthenumberofpegsithasoninterior(In)andthe
numberofpegsonboundaryherformulashouldgivemethearea.SowhatIdid
wasstartoffsmallofcourseandthenworkmywayupasIusuallydo.Ikindof

basedmyfirstansweroffofwhatIdidwithFreddie.Iusedfourpegsonboundary
tocreateonsquareunitwithnointerior.MyInwasfourbecauseIneededfour
pegstocreatethesquareandmyOutwaszero.MynextoneInwassixandmyOut
wasZero.IcontinuedthispatternandmyequationwasArea:(x/2+y)1.

SelfAssessment:
Ivementionedthisbefore,Iusedstartsmallasmyhabitofa
mathematician.BecauseIstartedwiththesmallestanswerIcouldpossiblycreate.
ThisPOWbyfarhasbeenoneofthemostchallengingformetoexplain.But
Collaboratingandworkingwithmypeersdefinitelyhelpedmegetthroughit.I
believeIdeservea8/10becauseIusedmytimewiselyinclasstogetthroughthe
partsthatweredifficultforme.Istayedupprettylatetryingtofigureouthowto
putmythoughtprocessintowordsandIwouldsayIdidprettygood.
