Some key patrons included Cardinal Scipione Borghese, who commissioned works like Apollo and Daphne and David, monopolizing Bernini's talents. Pope Urban VIII was a close friend who gave Bernini many commissions and allowed him to develop his architectural skills. After Urban VIII's death, Bernini felt threatened by the new pope's preference for Borromini, but the success of his Cornaro chapel allowed him to regain papal commissions, including from Pope Alexander VII who transformed St. Peter's basilica and Vatican palace through Bernini's works.
