The Police National Computer Database

The Police National Computer (PNC) is a computer system used extensively by law enforcement
organisations across the United Kingdom.

It went live in 1974 and now has several databases available 24 hours a day, giving access to information of
national and local significance to the public.

You can access PNC 24 hours day 7 days a week.

From October 2009, the National Policing Improvement Agency (NPIA) stated that there were over 9.2
million (personal) records, 52 million driver records, 55 million vehicle records and that 185million
transactions were mad in the last 12months.

The PNC started with a Stolen vehicles database.

The PNC is a computer system used greatly by law enforcement organisations across the United Kingdom.

There are 4 databases, which are called Names File, Vehicle File , Property File , Drivers File.

The Names file allows you to see a large amount of information about people who have been convicted,
cautioned or recently arrested. The Vehicle files Provides details on the registered keeper of a motor
vehicle, as well as storing other information from the DVLA as to the vehicle's status (Tax Expired, V23
Submitted, Stolen, Chassis Number, Engine Number etc.) The Property files will allow us to see types
of stolen and found property's, this can be placed onto the PNC system. The Drivers File contains
information on 48 million people who either hold a driving licence or are disqualified from holding one. The
record will contain information relating to test passes, endorsements and the licence entitlements.

The Police Crime Map

The police will be able to see what crime s have been committed in neighborhoods across the
capital. And what boroughs have the highest and lowest rate of crime.
The different access rights are , the police are able to open criminal profiles and change the
data when needed to , where as the public can only see the crime rate in the city and crime
rates for different types of crimes.
The security issues are that there is a chance of the website being hacked by an anonymous
person. That person can hack into the website and change the original data. Also burglars can
use this data to see which areas have the lowest crime rate and which are the easiest to target
for example Harrow is a place where the crime rate is below average therefore burglars will
attempt to burgle houses in that particular area.
