Personal Philosophy Statement

Intro to CTE

Why teaching? This is a question that I commonly get asked. A lot of people dont
understand why I would sign myself up for a career of high school kids acting out and being at a
place they usually dont want to be, but they do not understand the way I see teaching and
learning. The reason I became a teacher was not so students could know more about health and
anatomy, but rather to be a role model and helpful advocate for teens. As I have been teaching for
three years I have come to claim one truth when it comes to my teaching philosophy. This claim
is, Relationships are everything. This means that before you can make an impact or influence
on learning in a student you must establish a positive relationship with that student. They need to
know that you care about them and their future. Specifically as a Career and Technical Education
teacher students will not want to strive for success if we have not taken the time to get to know
them and help them find where they fit in the world of today.
I want to be a secondary CTE teacher because I want to not only help students be
prepared and successful in their future, but I also want to help them become better people and
reach their goals. As a CTE teacher we can talk to the students about more real life situations,
scenarios, and talk about their futures in a tangible way. We really have a chance to relate to
students and prepare them to make a positive impact on the world in a genuine way.
I plan to make a difference by caring for students as human beings and not just seeing
them for how many standards they have met. I want to get to know who they are and what they
desire in order to find motivation and inspiration for their future in the world of work. I plan to
have intriguing and fun lessons that are interactive and hands on. In my classroom right now, I
work hard to make learning fun and relatable to real life situations.
I have seen successes in making sure to connect with students and showing them that I
truly care about their life and their success. One piece of direct evidence is that the enrollment
for my Anatomy and Physiology class went from 20 (my first year of teaching at HS3) to 90 who
are currently enrolled for next school year. This shows that students enjoy the style of learning in
my classroom. Overall, I have had positive feedback from students and I am grateful for the
opportunity of becoming a CTE teacher and feel empowered to inspire students that they have so
much purpose in this world.
