Intermediate-Highspeakersareabletoconversewitheaseandconfidencewhendealingwith
mostroutinetasksandsocialsituationsoftheIntermediatelevel.Theyareabletohandle
successfullymanyuncomplicatedtasksandsocialsituationsrequiringanexchangeofbasic
informationrelatedtowork,school,recreation,particularinterestsandareasofcompetence,
thoughhesitationanderrorsmaybeevident.

Intermediate-HighspeakershandlethetaskspertainingtotheAdvancedlevel,buttheyare
unabletosustainperformanceatthatleveloveravarietyoftopics.Withsomeconsistency,

speakersattheIntermediateHighlevelnarrateanddescribeinmajortimeframesusing
connecteddiscourseofparagraphlength.However,theirperformanceoftheseAdvanced-level
taskswillexhibitoneormorefeaturesofbreakdown,suchasthefailuretomaintainthe
narrationordescriptionsemanticallyorsyntacticallyintheappropriatemajortimeframe,the
disintegrationofconnecteddiscourse,themisuseofcohesivedevises,areductioninbreadthand
appropriatenessofvocabulary,thefailuretosuccessfullycircumlocute,orasignificantamount
ofhesitation.
Intermediate-Highspeakerscangenerallybeunderstoodbynativespeakersunaccustomedto
dealingwithnon-natives,althoughthedominantlanguageisstillevident(e.g.useof
code-switching,falsecognates,literaltranslations,etc.),andgapsincommunicationmayoccur.
