Furthermore, if Omar can improve his self-control, he will find greater social acceptance amongst his peers and thus gain self-confidence. ‘The main factor prohibiting Omar ftom ‘success in school is not that the work is too hard but rather his difficulties in conforming ‘to class/school rules. Moreover, I have found that Omar does little work in my class unless he has my undivided attention and I am becoming quite concerned that I must continually reminded Omar to express himself respectfully in my class. I believe Omar must realize that he is in school to work and not to play and fool around. Tt would be very helpful if you discussed with him frequently that school is a place to work and apply himself academically. ‘Unfortunately, Omar has great difficulty focusing on his classwork since he often seeks the attention of his classmates through some sort of noise, disruption, or distraction, ‘This ultimately leads Omar to be disciplined, to loose valuable in-class time to complete his assignment, and easily impatient and restless when he is unable to complete his assignments. Mr. Seddique, I believe that with your cooperation with Omar, we can impart to him reminders that a positive attitude towards his teachers, his schoolwork, and his conduct will only serve to improve his ability to perform excellent academic work. Grandmother Ever since she could remember, Marina had watched her grandmother make pottery. Grandmother carefully coiled thin ropes of moldable clay into delicate jars. Then she used yucca leaf paintbrushes to brush the glaze onto the jars. Afterwards, she used the kiln Grandfather had built to fire the jars into sturdy, beautiful pottery. This summer Marina decided that she would learn the art of pottery making from her grandmother and carry on the tradition of her Hopi ancestors. Long ago the women of the pueblo used large, thin-walled clay jars to carry water from distant wells to their homes. Grandmother, like most of the other girls, learned to make these jars and decorate them with traditional designs of deer, birds, and plants. Now most of the jars were sold to collectors, but Grandmother still created each one in the old way. Sometimes Marina helped her grandmother, but usually she watched silently, she loved the way the old woman’s hands moved. Grandmother's skin was wrinkled and worn, and her hands looked rough and chapped, but she never ceased to amaze Marina with the way she could use those hands so skillfully. Today Grandmother was making a small jar with a lid. It was peaceful here in the middie of the hot, dry mesa, with the children playing near the small cluster of houses and Marina’s parents preparing supper nearby. The air was beginning to cool off as the sun turned the sky orange and pink. Grandmother hummed while she worked and once in a while glanced at Marina. "Why do you watch an old woman like me?" Grandmother asked, her eyes twinkling. “L want to do what you do,” Marina said. “Then it’s time you tried," said Grandmother. "Here, start rolling out the clay.” Marina took a deep breath and carefully shaped a fragile jar. “Is this right, Grandmother?" she asked doubtfully. Her grandmother was always patient and kind, yet Marina worried that her clumsy efforts would disappoint her. She shaped the clay as best she could, but as hard as she tried, she could not produce a perfect jar like Grandmother's. In comparison, hers seemed unbalanced and rough. Grandmother squinted at Marina’s jar. Then she reached out and touched it gently. "Good shape,” she murmured. "Close your eyes now and feel mine.” Marina felt the smoothness of Grandmother's jar as Grandmother guided her fingers over the smooth clay. Recent studies indicate that these islands may be much more important to history than many historians thought. For one thing, research shows that Europeans visited these islands long before the time of Columbus. Research also shows that these islands apparently served as stepping stones for early sailors. In this way the islands may have helped early adventurers sail as far as North America. The Voyage of Saint Brendan gives one of the earliest hints of this possibility. Saint Brendan was a monk who lived in Ireland in the sixth century. Saint Brendan was also a great sailor who sailed the North Atlantic. Apparently,he was one of the early adventurers who used these North Atlantic islands. The Voyage of saint Brendan is about Brendan’s travels. But like many other books of the Middle Ages, The Voyage of Saint Brendan reads like a fairy tale in many places. For example, it tells of sea monsters, an island whose highest mountain breathed smoke, and a huge floating piece of glass. While Christopher Columbus read The Vovage of Saint Brendan and believed it a true description of North Atlantic sailing, most historians came to see the book as just an exciting story. They thought the sights described in the book could not be real. They also did not believe ‘that anyone could cross the North Atlantic in a boat such as the one Brendan used. The kind of boat used in Brendan’s time was only a little larger than a canoe, It was made of ox hides stretched over a wooden frame, and its sails could not turn to catch the changing winds. Also, its exterior was waterproofed only with grease. A boat like this would fall apart in stormy seas, historians thought. But on June 26, 1977, an exact copy of a sixth-century craft arrived in Newfoundland. Tim Severin, a sailor and historian, had sailed the three thousand miles from Ireland to Canada with three other people. Rather than sailing directly across the ocean, Severin and his crew had sailed from island to island. During their voyage they had seen many things that Brendan had seen but not understood. For example Iceland, with its volcanoes, fit Brendan’s description of the island smoke. Severin did not prove that Brendan ever visited North America. He did show, though, that sailors could have crossed the North Atlantic in Brendan’s time, especially if they used the islands that dot this huge ocean. Severin’s boat held up through storms, icebergs, and visits from curious whales that seemed to wonder if the boat was edible. Its voyage showed that old stories can be clues to history.
