Contest Complements Bright House Networks Connect2Compete Launch
Indianapolis, IN (October 28, 2015) Students at IPS #51 James Russell Lowell Elementary will
be honored October 30, 2015 at a school assembly for their winning ideas in Bright House
Networks and Net Literacys Internet Safety Contest. Representative Robin Shackleford and
Senator Jean Breaux will give remarks and present the awards to the winning recipients. The
campaign is part of Bright House Networks and Net Literacys push to promote young people as
active allies and advocates in digital literacy.
For the contest, 3rd through 5th grade students were challenged to develop messages that could
address Internet safety through the question, If you had 30 seconds, what you would tell a friend, a
classmate, or a family member about how they could be safe while having fun online? Five
Winners will each receive a Dell Latitude 2100 Netbook that has been refurbished by Net Literacy
student volunteers.
Research has shown that students are 7% more likely to graduate from high school when they
have access to a computer at home and educational resources through the Internet, said
Representative Robin Shackleford. An incredibly effective way to reach students with important
messages like internet safety is through their peers, so we appreciate and thank all of those who
participated in the contest and supported this important project.
The contest complements Bright House Networks launch of the Connect2Compete pilot program at
IPS #51. Connect2Compete (C2C) is a national nonprofit initiative, aiming to bring students and
families online by providing $9.95/month high-speed Internet and low-cost refurbished computers
- more -
nationwide. For 2 years, there are no price increases, no activation fees and no equipment rental
fees associated with the high-speed Internet program.
Bright House Networks is committed to educating youth in the communities we serve about the
potential dangers that exist online, said Don Williams, VP Bright House Networks. These five
students have developed strong safety messages relatable to Internet users of any age, and we are
thrilled to partner with Net Literacy to honor them today. We are also pleased to work with James
Russell Lowell Elementary to launch the Connect 2 Compete program, which will help to further
equip its students with the tools they need to succeed in todays technology-driven classroom.
The winners of the Internet Safety Contest are as follows:
Cordrice Foster, 3rd grade
Dionna Sanders, 5th grade
Esteban Escamilla, 4th grade
Carols Pacheco, 3rd grade
Zairicka Green, 3rd grade
