Treatment
Outline
A exploration of depression and loneliness in a costal town.
Synopsis
A man wakes up, he gets out of his double bed and we can see that there was
clearly a space for another. He opens his windows, it is a dull morning in Workington. He
begins his morning routine, he showers, he gets dressed as he does were shown photos of
the man and a another man, a happier time, as he puts his shirt on, he looks in the mirror
he thinks; Its a Sunday. Easy, you can get through this.
He heads downstairs, we begin to get a feel for his small, somewhat out of time
household, we see him grab some breakfast, we get a few visual cues towards the knives
in the kitchen, and possibly have a bottle of Ketchup in the background to give the frame
some red.
He heads outside. From here we get a small tour of workington to really drive
home the idea of area as a character. He goes round to see his father shortly after this, to
check up on him, his dad is fine, the idea of the scene is that it rather blatantly shows that
really its the man who isnt well.
The interaction between the the man and his father is mundane, and considering
he went to check up on him, he barely manages this. They speak but he doesnt hear
anything. From what we do hear from his father thought its implied that he might not
know of the mans homosexuality.

After this he leaves at this point hes feeling as low as possible. When he steps out
of his fathers house he hits his lowest point, the world around him appears somewhat
greyer than before. He wonders past a pub where a couple walk out of it and a single tear
rolls down his face.
There is only so much a man can take and its all getting too much. He arrives
home and heads straight through to the kitchen, he pulls a knife from the rack, he holds it
in his palm for a few seconds. Were shown his face and he cant do it. He almost
immediately picks up the phone from this and phones his Dad. It is time to come clear.

Research & Info.

Approach to Direction
I think that this is worth noting as this is one of my major points of focus. I intend
to focus on a very disciplined approach to direction, shooting in wides on tripods for the
most part and using as little close up and handheld as possible. This is David Finchers
style of shooting and I think that it will transition to Social Realism quite well. For the
subject matter that intend to tackle, I think that refined direction is appropriate.
Target Audience
With British Social Realism, this genre has often been viewed as a response to rightwing larger budget movies of the 50s - 60s, and I think that this fact is still true to this
day. If you look at any British Social Realist movie a safe assumption to make about it, is
that the socio - economic group that it is displaying is often the Target Audience.
Influences
Im taking a lot from the lineage of British Social Realism, its a genre that has its
roots in low budget filmmaking, and my intention is to mimic this style. Something else
that was worth noting that I will also be taking elements from the movie A Single Man
and Weekend. Social Realism and Homosexuality often are explored together.

For me another major influence is Director Lynne Ramsey. Lynne Ramseys style is
often known for being very show and not tell, using images and great facial
performance to tell a story.
As I have previously stated David Fincher is a major influence on me from a
directorial standpoint, his movies are so well disciplined and they are often somewhat
realist.
