Dear CFL fans,

The 2016 CFL fantasy football season is here once again.
Training camps are underway and new stars are set to emerge.
Everyones favourite CFL fantasy football site, Fantaseh.ca, is back
online and ready to go. Meanwhile, the CFL itself is ready to put more
of a focus on fantasy football and engage its fans more and more this
way.
We know the importance of statistics. We know how the younger demographic
consumes sports. And oftentimes, its fantasy.
- CFL Commissioner Jeff Orridge

MIKE REILLY
EDMONTON

7TH SEASON
QB

63, 230

He is the complete package, your superstar. He

is a slam dunk for fantasy points because he
pushes the ball down field, will get you yards
with his legs, and will pass and run for TDs. The
knock on #13 is he usually only makes two reads,
then pulls the ball down and runs. But its
fantasy football, so thats what you want from
him.
THE BALD TRUTH: Because of the way Reilly
plays the game he opens himself up to injuries.
Regardless, the reward far outweighs the risk.

HENRY BURRIS
OTTAWA

18TH SEASON
QB

61, 190

A QB controversy, say who? We believe Rick

Campbell has a plan in place and that Burris will
be the full-time guy in 2016 (who knows about
2017?), despite the signing of Trevor Harris.
There was not a more exciting player to watch in
2015 than Henry Burris. Henry has the weapons,
the heart, and he still has that cannon of an arm.
Why slow down now?
THE BALD TRUTH: He has been relatively healthy
his entire career. But he is over the age of 40
now and has a very capable backup. The
question is, will this be the year the ageless one
goes down early?

DREW WILLY
WINNIPEG

5TH SEASON
QB

64, 221

Oh, Willy Wonka. He was supposed to be the

Bombers golden ticket to erasing their 1990
Grey Cup curse. But, despite the money flowing
like a chocolate fountain to build a solid O-line
for him, theyve been a pile of Oompa Loompas.
All kidding aside, he has massive weapons at
receiver this year plus a superstar running back.
And if he is not able to get it done this year, the
Bombers may look elsewhere for 2017.
THE BALD TRUTH: Once Reilly and probably Bo
Levi Mitchell go 1 and 2 in your draft, pick Willy.
He will light up the CFL for passing yards in 2016.

RICKY RAY
TORONTO

Go Ricky, Go Ricky (pardon the 90s pun). Its

your team again. Full steam ahead. The
organization put confidence in you by letting

:-

Trevor Harris sign in Ottawa. This Argonauts

team has a wealth of weapons at receiver. The
unfortunate part? There will be 7 other very
good teams in the CFL this season, so do not
expect inflated yards.
THE BALD TRUTH: The California native pretty
much has a patent on ball security. He will be a
safe option. He also comes with good yardage
numbers and TDs, but with the obvious injury
warning signs.

BO LEVI MITCHELL
CALGARY

QB

5TH SEASON
62, 204

He tied a CFL record for wins to start a season in

his rookie year. He somehow found ways to win
games in 2015 with bodies dropping all around
him. Now he has lost two massive weapons to
the NFL in Eric Rogers and Jeff Fuller. He will still
have Jerome Messam to ditch it off to, but its
been too pretty and too perfect for BLM so far.
We have a bad feeling he is in for a wakeup call
in 2016.

youve been warned.

11TH SEASON
511, 214

Cover your eyes. If there is a slogan for

Durants career, it would be that. When he is not
winning Grey Cups with his legs or shaking off
five defenders while standing still, he is also
throwing away games with blind passes or
blowing his [insert body part here] in a seasonending injury. If you like heart attacks, he is your
man. He has new weapons, a new coach and
coordinator, and a new [Achilles]. He will have a
respectable year.
THE BALD TRUTH: Can he stay healthy? In
reality, thats the only question needing to be
asked. If he plays 18 games, see Mike Reilly for
advice relating to fantasy football numbers

ZACH COLLAROS
HAMILTON

QB

5TH SEASON
60, 216

Collaros and Mike Reilly are the new faces of the

CFL....unfortunately, Collaros might also now
have a new title to go along with that one: injury
prone. He seemed destined for redemption at
the 2015 Grey Cup, if not for a torn ACL ending
his season. Now word comes down he will not
be ready for the start of the 2016 season. Is this
another incarnation of Travis Lulay?
THE BALD TRUTH: It is painful to say this but
dont take him in the top five for the sake of
being able to enjoy your life. When he is healthy,
he is nearly a perfect QB. But he is not healthy.

JONATHON JENNINGS
BC

QB

2ND SEASON
60, 195

Jackpot. Daily Double. He might not be related

to Ken Jennings of Jeopardy fame, but he singlehandedly willed the BC Lions 2015 season.
Thankfully, the Bombers and Riders also helped
by blowing major chunks one year ago.
However, this season the entire West Division
will be competitive and Jennings still has to
prove himself over Travis Lulay to Wally Buono.
But he still has Manny A and two very, very good
RBs.
THE BALD TRUTH: How long will it take for Travis
Lulay to realize the team is better without him?
Until then, Jennings will struggle to take off for
fantasy owners.

KEVIN GLENN

16TH SEASON
QB

510, 205

We have said it for Glenns entire CFL career. He

throws 10-yard passes, 200-yard games with 2
TDs and 2 INTs. He is a warm cuddly blanket
with a cup of coffee, but a self-defence class
without a jockstrap for fantasy football players.
Now he will do the same for the Als until a
permanent starter emerges (Rakeem Cato?
Brandon Bridge? Vernon Adams?).
THE BALD TRUTH: He could either be the
starting QB in Montreal by the end of the
season, or play on all 9 teams by October. For
now, he is the Als starter.

TRAVIS LULAY
BC

8TH SEASON
QB

62, 216

We love you, Travis. We do. You were the face of

the CFL. You have the personality, the charisma,
and the talent. You are so good when you are at
the top of your game. You are poised in the
pocket. All of which we could say before the
start of 2015. Then some guy named Jennings
came along, and now your job is in jeopardy.
Lulay also no longer has the arm strength to
stretch the field.

JEREMIAH MASOLI
HAMILTON

QB

4TH SEASON
510, 221

Masoli may not have the best accuracy in the

CFL nor will he blow you away with decision
making. Yet he will hang in the pocket and fight
to make a play (similar to Darian Durant). He
should start out 2016 in concert with Jeff
Mathews filling in for Zach Collaros, who
continues to recover from his torn ACL.
THE BALD TRUTH: Masoli will get a great chance
early in the season at signal caller. He will,
however, be on a short leash with Mathews
ready. Once Collaros is back, Masoli could be left
to just holding a clipboard.

wonder how many games will he play. His ceiling
is top-of-the-league territory and goes from
having Ricky Ray to having Henry Burris as a

Be honest. You bought a Brett Smith jersey in

2015, didnt you? Even if you are a Bombers,
Stamps, or Eskimos fan, I know you did. Dont be
ashamed. He was the only reason any league
rival had a soft spot for the Riders last year, a
team that finished 3-and-15. But he now has a
fresh slate with the new Chris Jones-led staff and
will continue to learn from Darian Durant.

MATT NICHOLS
WINNIPEG

7TH SEASON
QB

62, 215

Well come right out and say it. Matt Nichols is

the second coming of Michael Bishop. He has his
haters and he has his believers. Unfortunately,
he just does not have the arm strength to be
anything more than a solid backup. Nichols will
have great weapons in Winnipeg should he
come in in relief of Drew Willy. But hang on, so
did he in Edmonton. So maybe dont expect big
numbers should that happen.
THE BALD TRUTH: Another major injury to Drew
Willy is the only way that Nichols sees significant
playing time in the potentially potent Bombers
offense. So if you are a Willy owner, heres your
Plan B. But expect a fumble, a pick, and nowhere

near Wily numbers in that scenario.

JEFF MATHEWS
HAMILTON

2ND SEASON
QB

64, 224

Jeff Mathews is the first of a handful of

quarterbacks that you need to look at for their
short yardage contributions. Although Jeremiah
Masoli will start the season as the main guy in
Hamilton, Mathews should get looks as well. He
was the primary short yardage guy for Ticats in
2015 and should continue that role this year,
with or without Zach Collaros starting.
THE BALD TRUTH: Mathews been with Kent
Austin since his freshman year at Cornell. Austin
trusts him. Should Masoli falter early on, do not
be surprised to see Mathews jump in. Still,
Collaros will be the starter by the time of fantasy
playoffs.

BRYANT MONIZ
CALGARY

3RD SEASON
QB

60, 205

Moniz, the main man in short yardage situations

for the Stamps, will stay in that job for another
season. He is virtually an unknown in the CFL.
With Drew Tate still in Cowtown, Moniz is not
going to get many chances to throw the ball. But
there could be many rushing TDs once again. In
a deep league, he is a viable option to stash on
your bench.
THE BALD TRUTH: Moniz could be a decent
option in a bye week, but he will not be a QB
that will win you many weeks. If Bo Levi Mitchell
goes down, add Tate to your roster instead.

BRANDON BRIDGE

2ND SEASON
65, 235

The guy everyone is cheering for. A Canadian

quarterback, Air Canada himself. Bridge is the
real deal, a bona fide QB in waiting. He has the
Casey Printers makeup in him, and Printers
himself was an elite fantasy option in his day.
The Mississauga, Ontario native has the ability to
take over a game himself, but he just needs the
reps. This is Montreal, the definition of QB
carousel, with more than just a couple of
veteran quarterbacks.
THE BALD TRUTH: The Alouettes certainly like
what they have in Bridge but he will have to wait
his turn. Keep an eye on him as the season

8TH SEASON

Not going to lie, we are just as surprised as you

to see McPherson still in the CFL. And at that,
that hes still contributing as a player and not as
a coach by now. The consummate team player,
hes actually a decent fantasy option given Ricky
Rays injury history and that he will continue to
handle the short yardage for the Double Blue.
Draft him if youre looking for a long backup
then trade him early in the season.
THE BALD TRUTH: He very well may retire

The reason the Eskimos were able to trade Matt

has a solid arm, can make quick decisions, and
has great accuracy on the ball. He will bide his
time for now behind Mike Reilly, but it is only a
matter of time before he lands a starting job in
the CFL.

Is it fair to say there are two extremes with ol

Drew? #1 How is he not starting in the league

CFL? There really is no happy medium. If not for
his fiery attitude, Im sure he would have been
given a dominant role by now. For now, he sits
behind Bo Levi Mitchell as the Stamps starter,
and behind Bryant Moniz as the Stamps short

Rakeem, Rakeem, Rakeem. You had your

and whether you will even be a Montreal

:
:-

THE BALD TRUTH: The Alouettes have tried

trading Cato in the time leading up to training

ANDREW HARRIS
WINNIPEG

RB

7TH SEASON
511, 213

Harris was one of the most dominant players in

the CFL two years ago before suffering a season
ending injury. Over the years, many would argue
that he was not getting the type of looks he
should have in BC, contributing to lower fantasy
numbers for his owners. With a fresh start in his
hometown of Winnipeg, he will be busy in a very
high powered offense.
THE BALD TRUTH: When he does not get the
ball, he loses focus, and subsequently his
production suffers. He will not have to worry
about not touching the football in Winnipeg.
That being said, he comes with an injury

Albeit, this is still not quite a household name in
the CFL The REBLACKS like him more than
Chevon Walker, hes flashier than Jeremiah
Johnson, and he can hit holes to break big runs.
Depending on the knowledge of your fantasy
league members, you may be able to scoop him

THE BALD TRUTH: Ottawas offense was retooled late in 2015 to feature more of him. That

Johnson is aggressive and attacks the defense.
He is also armed with a pile of talent and will
frustrate players trying to chase him all game.
The main caution? He is in a crowded backfield
in BC with Anthony Allen vying for time. On top
of that, BC has been notorious for limiting the
rushing attack in its playbook for a few years

THE BALD TRUTH: He is a fantasy win. He will

Unfortunately, he had nearly the lowest yards
rushing per game of his career. He turns 31 in

THE BALD TRUTH: Whitaker is a great back for

role as a go-to option in the offense. However,
now he has more target competition, a lot of
very good competition. The good news is that
Kohlert is Canadian and will start week after

THE BALD TRUTH: Kohlert is very sure handed in

Joe West started out his CFL career like a house

remainder of that year and into 2013. But a
shoulder injury in 2013 caused him to miss 12
games and he has not been the same since. He
has not seen the same volume of targets the last

A question that many have asked across the CFL:

how has Parker not earned a full-time starter
yet? He is already going into his 6th season in the
league and he has played the same role for the
last three, increasing his receiving numbers littleby-little each year. To see that role expanding
beyond what it was last year might be difficult,
given the expected emergence of the big and
young, Lemar Durant and the return of Simon
Charbonneau-Campeau, a player injured most of
last season.
THE BALD TRUTH: Many will likely overvalue
Parker coming into this year thanks to the open
competitions to replace Eric Rogers and Jeff

THE BALD TRUTH: He gets garbage points, the

After a five-year NFL career, Westerman

exploded onto the scene in the CFL in 2015 and
led the league in sacks in his debut season. The
most impressive part was that he was the focal
point on a Bombers defense that was anything
but respectable. Teams could double-team and
he still ate quarterbacks for breakfast at will.
THE BALD TRUTH: The Bombers brass addressed
everything around him and he could be even
better in 2016. Keith Shologan and Euclid

Elimimian is arguably the most all-around

he was on pace for league leading numbers once

Raymond, a veteran SAM linebacker, left the
only CFL city he has known in Calgary and
departed for Toronto early in free agency. He is
a dressing room leader, a guy that can make
plays and change momentum, and someone
very familiar with Rich Stublers system. He
shows no signs of slowing down, even as he
reaches his mid-30s.
THE BALD TRUTH: Like a fine wine, he has
actually gotten better with age. He will get a lot
of tackles in this Toronto defense in addition to a
few turnovers. He is a great start week-by-week.

If he can stay healthy, Johnny Sears Jr. could be

the top defensive back in the CFL. He has an
explosive first few steps, has great size, is
tenacious, and has great instincts. But it sure
would be nice if he could play a double digit
number of games in a season. In 2015, he only
got into three contests with his new team in
Hamilton because of injury. That came after five
years in Winnipeg, where he only dressed for 36
games.

Gavins was a player in 2015 that you hoped and

interception, and a fumble recovery. People
would then rush to the waiver wire only to
watch him record one tackle for three straight

to the addition to John Ojo on the Eskimos

with receptions. Watkins got a lot of tackles and
had four interceptions. The Eskimos will have a

he will also get some turnovers. Given a fresh

THE BALD TRUTH: The Ticats signed Washington

THE BALD TRUTH: One of the other positives of

know it is rare that you will have to check the
Stampeders depth chart for whether he will play

Ojo Cinco? Indeed that was the case (we

picked off five passes in his debut season and
helped the Esks to a Grey Cup championship in

that drafted or grabbed him early in the season
once he claimed the starting job in training

quarterbacks avoided. Until he became one.
THE BALD TRUTH: The Eskimos lost a trio of big
cover weapons in the offseason in Aaron

THE BALD TRUTH: Perhaps a repeat
performance of four interceptions is a bit too
conservative of an estimate. But Owusu-Ansah

THE BALD TRUTH: With so many moving parts in
Montreal, this defense (and Brouillette) is hard
to predict. He should be a starter in 2016 but the
talent at linebacker could be used at his safety
spot. Keep an eye for how Popp dresses his
other Canadians in preseason.

Giving Bear Woods a run for his money as best

name in the CFL, Hightower started six games at
safety in the absence of Jermaine Robinson in

halfback. Others in the mix include holdovers
Brandon Sermons, Jeff Richards, John Boyett,
and National veteran Ryan Hinds.
THE BALD TRUTH: The REDBLACKS were

full group ready to compete in preseason and
whoever starts at halfback could see plenty of

EDMONTON ESKIMOS
Hands down the most debated defensive unit heading
into the 2016 season. Chris Jones is gone, as is a host
of key players, including McCoil, Grymes, and Foster.
Incoming, along with new head coach Jason Maas, is
Mike Benevides as defensive coordinator.
THE BALD TRUTH: Benevides will guide the defense in
a similar fashion to Jones and, with a lot of veterans
returning, they should not miss a beat. For many
players, particularly a couple on the line, this season
could be the end with a new look coming in 2017.
2015
2016
PROJ

The Riders defense was scary bad in 2015. In 2016,

however, they get the last laugh. They cleaned house of
aging, often exposed veterans and brought in an all new D-line, two new LBs,
and big, talented DBs. Oh, and of course, there is the guy behind all of the
moves, new coach Chris Jones. He will get this group to quickly assimilate and
will catch some teams by surprise.
THE BALD TRUTH: They will have some bumps along the way. But this unit will
have all the qualities of a typical Jones defense. They will not give up much in
yards or points, plus will be at or near the top of the league in sacks and picks.

HAMILTON TIGER-CATS
The Tabbies tied for tops in INTs and third in passing yards in 2015, yet gave
up their share of TD passes. Of course, there was one key TD pass they would
like to have back. Kent Austin, because of injuries and free agency, is forced to
make changes. Three starters are gone along the line, two LBs, and two
starting DBs. The good news is they now have John Chick, plus young talents
like Alex Hoffman-Ellis and Adrian Tracy.
THE BALD TRUTH: D Coordinator Orlondo Steinhauer has done a tremendous
job in his first three seasons and will use the athleticism of the young players
to dominate. If this defense alone doesnt excite you, there is also the special
teams with Brandon Banks and his electrifying returns. A strong fantasy play.

CALGARY STAMPEDERS
A usually active, frustrating, and pick-happy unit, this group was also first in
TDs surrendered last year. That was then, this is now. Head Coach John
Hufnagel is now just GM and Rich Stubler left for Toronto. In are Dave
Dickenson as coach and DeVone Claybrooks as coordinator. The team lost
talent and leadership on the field in the offseason and may have a new look.
THE BALD TRUTH: Even though there was plenty of turnover, this will still be
older group, with four of its five expected secondary starters being over 30.
Overall, they will still make plays but, unfortunately, they will give up big yards
and be on the field for a long time.

TORONTO ARGONAUTS
No one expected the Argos to keep pace in 2015 in the East, but young stars
sprouted up all over the defense, and they earned a spot in the East Semi.
Their secondary remains virtually untouched, they added vet Keon Raymond
to the LB group, and three arrive on the line. Most notably, Rich Stubler takes
over as coordinator and will add new wrinkles with an active group.
THE BALD TRUTH: The stat line will read regularly of multiple interceptions,
double digit tackle games, and plenty of forced fumbles. Unfortunately, they
will still give up yards and big points, and lose games.

MONTREAL ALOUETTES

The team you want to ignore. Look at last years stats and you see middle of
the road in every single defensive category. But you should not ignore them.
This is a better group immediately with the return of Solomon Elimimian, just
by his presence alone. Couple that with that they have young, hungry talent
that were dominant in October, and you have a bounce back year.
THE BALD TRUTH: This is a defense that might not put up elite numbers on
keeping the other team off the score board but they will get a lot of the
individual stat categories, like sacks, INTs, and fumble recoveries. Even if
they lose, Chris Rainey will get you return TD points.
2016
PROJ

This group improved massively between 2014 and 2015. They were good, fast,
physical, and hungry. Many individual players had career years and they
nearly stole a Grey Cup in their second year. It also didnt hurt that they had
huge leads thanks to a ridiculous offense that put up points all year.
THE BALD TRUTH: The team had minimal turnover during the offseason, and
the players that left have effective and younger replacements ready to go.
Expect them to start off strong and give up more as the season goes on. They
may not have the same offensive support as last year either.

If not for their defense, it could have been much worse in Montreal in 2015.
An impressive linebacker group, a towering front four, and young ball hawks
in the secondary. They have plenty of talent but plenty of questions on
defense. Some tough decisions still need to be made on a few veterans
contracts.
THE BALD TRUTH: This is another defense that will be on the field a lot in
2016. The good news is that they will get garbage points similar to some
offensive players with late game sacks, interceptions, and forced fumbles.
They will also keep games low scoring. Just dont expect them to win your

WINNIPEG BLUE BOMBERS

Hey, its not their fault. Theyre always on the field! words spoken
frequently by Bombers fans in 2015. Winnipeg featured a perpetual 2-and-out
offense that never really allowed for a realistic assessment of the defense.
Fortunately, they addressed some defensive needs as well in free agency and
will continue to make Jamaal Westerman the focal point of this group.
THE BALD TRUTH: They will not be on the field anywhere near as much as last

of big plays and will have a lot of shootout games.

Back from the dead and into a Grey Cup Game, Milo
went full Lazarus with his CFL career in 2015. While he
did not quite get manure dumped on his lawn, Rider
fans were not that sad to see Milo cut early in 2015
either. He latched on in Ottawa and his big leg gave
them kicking stability not previously there.
THE BALD TRUTH: Thanks to the dynamite Ottawa
offense, Milo should be one of your first couple picks
as a kicker. He will have plenty of chances for converts
and field goals, which is great, so long as he makes
them. Dont forget that he is Canadian for ratio leagues.

This left leg is something else. While many celebrate Medlock for his huge
kicks from big distances, they often forget about his accuracy. In 2015, he
became the CFLs most accurate kicker of all-time at an 87.5% clip. Meanwhile,
he claimed the leagues scoring title by 23 points over second place. Now he
comes to Winnipeg (and their revamped offense) after signing a big money
free agent deal in the offseason.
THE BALD TRUTH: Medlock could, and should, repeat his big point numbers
again. Still, it is dependent on the Bombers offense getting him into place for
field goals and extra points. This is a solid pick at kicker every single season.

booted him all the way to Edmonton. This could be a breakout year for Bede,
a former Laval Rouge et Or. He has everything you would want from a kicker
and should have more chances because of a more talented Montreal offense.
THE BALD TRUTH: Take note and remember that Bede is from France and so

This feels a little strange but one of the most consistent kickers in recent years

Foley is a National and offers ratio flexibility. The
Argos do have other strong Canadians ready to

Williams was drafted in the 4th round by the

The question is who the Argos will replace Jones
with. Thomas Miles, a 3rd-year National, started
7 games at linebacker when WLB starter Cory
Greenwood went down with injury. Miles could
give the team ratio flexibility. Still, Spruill could
also be a game changer if he is at 100%. The
