STAFF ACCOUNTANT
NATURE OF WORK
This is professional accounting work involving the application of
accounting/auditing techniques to a variety of fiscal transactions and control
systems.
An employee in a position allocated to this class is responsible for
accounting and auditing functions. Supervision may be exercised over clerical
personnel. Work may require the exercise of independent judgement performed
under the general supervision of a senior accountant or administrative superior.
Work is reviewed through periodic reports and conferences.

EXAMPLES OF WORK
Writes performance evaluations; issues counseling forms/disciplinary
actions; handles employee complaints and grievances; recommends the hiring,
firing and promotion of staff.
Supervises clerical personnel involved in varied duties.
Prepares fiscal analyses and assists in preparation of financial
statements.
Maintains journals, general ledgers, and subsidiary ledgers.
Assists in budget preparations.
Assists in conducting and presenting audits/reviews.
Examines the financial records and operational areas of a department to
ensure compliance with law and policy and procedure memoranda.
Assists in planning the scope of an audit, preparing an audit program, and
determining audit procedures.
Performs related work as required.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES


Knowledge of the principles and practices of accounting/ auditing.
Knowledge of modern accounting and office procedures and equipment,
including the application of electronic data processing to the maintenance and
analysis of fiscal data.
Knowledge of the principles of supervision, organization and administration
and internal control systems.
Ability to plan, direct, and coordinate the work of subordinates.
Ability to express ideas effectively, orally and in writing.
Ability to formulate and install standard and special accounting methods,
procedures, forms and records.
Knowledge of PC based spreadsheet applications.

MINIMUM ENTRANCE REQUIREMENTS


Graduation from an accredited college or university with major coursework
in accounting.
